It’s been some time since I strolled around Gosselins Do Not Need Our Pity, but it’s great to be home again. So much has happened in the two and a half years since I first googled “Aunt Jodi” and “Kate Gosselin.” And so much has stayed the same!

Jon and Kate are divorced, as are Jon and TLC. Jon & Kate + 8 is now Kate + 8, and Kate has been moving on and branching out. The show has gone from 50 episodes in a season to about a half-dozen specials in a year. We no longer see the middle-class family at home living out their (sometimes private!) lives. Now we get to see the children enjoying some of the benefits of the reality TV stars’ lives: high-end vacations doing exclusive activities like hiking an Alaskan glacier in summer and meeting a Vice-Presidential candidate.

Despite the changes, so much of the Gosselin blogging world remains the same. Kate is as polarizing as ever; she still has passionate defenders and critics. Hate blogs have come and gone; bloggers have come and gone. But some, like me, still find the topics, the discussions, and the communities fascinating.

We often get asked questions about the Gosselin blog past. Sometimes it is hard to piece together what happened because Kate’s critics have a habit of deleting their blogs or making hem private. That is why I love this old blog. When I want to be more certain of something that happened months or years ago, I can stroll through the comments here to jog my memory.

I was asked recently about “that organic cow debate.” One of our Kate-critics from this blog, NC Resident, brought up a debate I had with him here on GDNNOP when he was recently featured on an Internet radio show. I missed the show, but I understand he was still angry about the side of beef Jon and Kate received in exchange for promoting the farm. Brings back memories! If I recall correctly, the debate was about a side of beef Kate and Jon bought on an episode from the first or second season of the show. The show was already old when we debated, and the debate was 2 years ago! Whew! That’s an impressive amount of time to be angry at Kate for buying beef!

So what was that debate about? I know what my point was: Whether they bought the cow or got it free, the episode promoted local PA businesses, and brought money into the local economy. Two years later, I think it’s pretty obvious: the Gosselins boosted the local economy. Since that time, the Gosselins purchased a beautiful property, hired local babysitters, at least one teacher, lawn care pros, and patronized salons, gas stations, stores, and inspired others to do the same. I know of at least one ticket to the local corn maze that was sold for the privilege of looking at Kate Gosselin, and another blogger who brought her vacation dollars all the way from Mississippi to spend in Pennsylvania. Two local authors have even tried to cash in on the Gosselin phenomenon!

I definitely enjoyed debating the finer points of the Gosselin show here at GDNNOP, and still enjoy Gosselin Chatter at Imperfect Women. I know NC Resident does too! Several of the ladies from GDNNOP have joined together to create a new women’s website. Last Christmas several of us decided we liked discussing the off topics more than discussing "Jon and Kate Plus 8" and we started considering a name for a new web site.

It took us about a month and at the beginning of February we purchased the domain www.imperfectwomen.com. Since that time, we have been busily working on the new site and learning a lot as we went along. Recently, we invited regular posters whose email address we had to participate in the new site and today we are inviting you all!

We will still discuss "Jon and Kate Plus 8", but it will not be our main focus. The new site will give us the ability to write about many different issues and will feature articles to initiate discussions on various subjects. The new site features categories such as Relationships, Sports, Style, Well-Being and Entertainment, among others.

At this time, we are not going to have registration so we will not be using avatars. It is something we will consider in the future if people are interested.

We are inviting all of our GDNNOP posters (and lurkers!) to come on over and jump in. We would like to have people introduce themselves in "The Lounge" so we can all get reacquainted in our new home.

We will be leaving GDNNOP up for people to read previous posts, but it will no longer be an active site. Thanks for participating in and making GDNNOP a great experience. We are excited and hope you are also. Be sure to read our About Us page to learn more about those involved.

In this one-hour, up close and personal season premiere, side by side Jon and Kate address what the future holds for their family." May 25, 9:00 p.m. (Note that TLC's website now has this episode as 75 minutes long, rather than an hour.)

As an aside, this past weekend a close friend of the blog lost a loved one suddenly and tragically. It's a reminder to us all what *really* matters, and hint: it's not a cable television show about people none of us know in real life. With that said, we are not in the mood for much negativity or ugliness and may feel the need to moderate more carefully, so please be respectful in your comments. Thanks.

Some took me to task yesterday for discussing the Jodi and Kevin hair situation. I know everyone will be very relieved to know there will be no mention of Gosselin or Kreider hair in this post! Instead, I will discuss my own. Lucky you! I got it colored yesterday and can I tell you how much I love the two plus weeks following a coloring when I have no discernable gray hair? Even better is the blow-out I got afterwards that takes care of my own frizz (you better believe I have it too) until the next shampoo. I think I’ll shampoo my hair next on…..June 9^th.

Ok, onto the latest Gosselin developments.

Kate has a blog! Who doesn’t these days?

So far, there is just one entry discussing the infamous trip to the party store. Ok, let’s get a couple of things out of the way – I don’t really think she is necessarily writing this thing. And I agree parts of it read like Kate is addressing her critics -- such as her assertion that she went outside to play with the kids prior to the store trip. Maybe she did, maybe she didn’t, but knowing how she has been knocked for not playing with the kids enough (in some people’s minds) made me think the inclusion of this bit of information was deliberate. That said, I think the blog could be a good vehicle for her to get her version of events out there without involving magazines, etc. We will see, I guess.

Also, TLC has posted a “sneak peek” of the season five premiere. I have my own thoughts, but I’ll let you guys weigh in first.

Lastly, for a bit of levity, Jimmy Fallon performed an amusing send-up of the Gosselin “beef” on his late night television show the other night.

The Gosselins’ Media Circus Continues

So far, this week isn’t bringing the minute-by-minute breathless revelations about the Gosselin family that the last couple of weeks brought, but that hasn’t stopped the tabloid press and weekly entertainment shows from trying to drum up stories. Tonight a very nice woman named Candi Wingate of Nannies4Hire.com appeared on Entertainment Tonight and shared her vast experience working with the Gosselins for a brief period a year and half ago. Yawn. Sorry. Time for some Red Bull.

Folks hoping for an appearance from Jenny or Not-A-Nanny were disappointed, but were able to satisfy themselves with yet another appearance by Kevin and Jodi Kreider on Radar Online. Yawn. Sorry, guess that Red Bull hasn’t kicked in yet! Today, everyone’s favorite in-laws focused on a story that Jon told them about a “secret marriage contract.” The whole thing sounds absurd to me, but I’d like to hear what you all think. And on a purely shallow note, for all the people who complain about Kate’s hair, can we not agree that Kevin’s part in the middle is not working and Jodi could really use some product to curb the frizz?

Someone forwarded me a comment that appeared on another site about the Going Green episode. The commenter complained because she felt that low income families could have been given solar paneling for the cost of the Gosselins’ paneling. She further asserted that Kate was not grateful (I assume this lady must be psychic, since Kate expressed gratitude several times in the episode; apparently, this complete stranger on the internet knows better!).

There were a couple of comments in our own episode thread referencing Kate’s lack of gratitude. Besides again feeling that Kate’s expression of thanks conveyed gratitude, I was left feeling I’d missed something. Was the solar panel installation described as being a charitable endeavor towards the Gosselins? I had assumed, and saw nothing that indicated otherwise in the episode, that those who participated in the installation were compensated. I didn’t think it was a case of “oh, these poor Gosselins can’t even afford to heat their home; we must help them!”, and I don’t understand why anyone else would have thought that.

So, as I said in the episode thread, I’m not sure how much gratitude was required. I was raised to say “thank you” when completing business transactions, but I don’t fall all over myself in abject thankfulness every time I buy a pair of shoes.

I guess I don't understand why any time the Gosselins get anything, it has to be brought up that there is someone, somewhere who deserves it more. I guess I'm lucky I'm not under such scrutiny. Can you imagine all the people who deserved or needed the jalapeno bagel I had for breakfast more than me?

I don’t know. Maybe the original poster is a Marxist (hmm, she does mention “struggling” in her post!). Maybe that’s what the pro-/anti-Gosselin business is really about – the capitalists against those that subscribe to the notion, “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need”. Maybe one day the mighty proletariat will rise and vanquish the bourgeoisie Gosselins (especially that little Leah – such an anti-egalitarian enemy of the people!) forever.

Or maybe some people need to get the hell over it and realize that some people have more than others, and that watching TV (or reading a book, or…going out of the house, really) involves the risk of encountering such people. Maybe those “low income houses”, or rather the people in them, should be grateful that they actually do have a roofs over their heads; plenty of people in the world don’t, you know.

After the recent discussions about books we decided it would be fun to set up a book club. This would be a 'read as you can' set up, instead of a chapter a day or something structured like that. If we start a series we do not necessarily have to do the next book in the series, though that is an option. So far we came up with three options to get the brainstorming started:

"Small Sacrifices" by Ann Rule (book about Diane Downs which we have previously discussed)

O'Malley series by Dee Henderson (beginning with "The Negotiator")

Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich (starting with "One for the Money")

What Was Your First Car?

My first car was a monster of a car. It was a 1968 blue Oldsmobile 442, the same car that is pictured to the left. I purchased it in 1976 for $400. I was a junior in college and tired of riding my bike to work in below zero weather. Needless to say it was a junk car and really laid down a smoke screen, but I loved it. It also averaged about 10 miles to a gallon of gas but back then gas was only 25 cents a gallon.

What was your first car? Was it cool, a junker, or something in between? Did you purchase it with your hard earned cash or was it is a gift from a wealthy aunt who soon became your favorite aunt? Tell us about it. The color, year, make and the good and bad times that were had!

In the Miss USA pageant, which occured on Sunday April 19th, Miss California made it to the top 5 and was asked a question by blogger Perez Hilton. Watch the question and her response at this link.

This has created a firestorm from both Perez (who went on in interviews to call Miss Prejean a bitch as well as a c*nt which he later retracted) as well as the contestant (who has yet to accept Perez's invitation to meet for coffee just to chat but speaks in interviews about how she prays and feels sorry for him). In the days that have followed Perez has filled his twitter as well as his blog with links and articles related to this topic while also reminding people that Miss North Carolina won the pageant and deserves the praise her new title is due. Miss California has been seen on talk shows, Fox News, as well as in interviews where she stands by her comments, saying that she followed her heart and knew it would be an answer people would not like to hear.

Miss California was runner up for the crown and many from the pageant (organizers, other judges, former pageant queens and current representatives) said she lost the crown with her answer. The issue that has come to play is whether political correctness should trump personal ethics.

While many in the country may agree with the answer given, was it proper for Miss California to say something divisive when in a competition to become an ambassador for the country? Did the actions of this young woman show her as someone staying true to herself and following her heart, or did they show her as being narrow minded or discriminatory? What is your take on this issue? Was Miss California correct to answer how she did? How do you feel about Perez Hilton's response to her statements?

If you're anything like me, you spend a fair amount of time on the internet on any given day. I mean, I'm not at "attached to the chair while empty food containers pile up around me" levels, by any means, but along with reading and watching television, surfing the net is one of the things I do daily to relax and unwind.So naturally, I've acquired some favorite sites (besides this one!) - places I like to check in at least once every couple of days.

One is Dooce - if you've ever wondered what it's like to be an ex-Mormon SAHM living in the heart of Utah with a geeky-cute husband, an adorable but willful child and two crazy dogs, this is the blog for you. I enjoy Heather Armstrong's sense of humor (and sometimes her just-plain-sense) so much.

Another is Sporcle - someone got me hooked on this website when they linked to one of their games on a message board last year. I tell myself that the time I spend here is educational - by playing these games I was able to learn all the countries of the world and all the flags of the world. (I have a long way to go on world capitals, though. Spelling issues. For instance, I can never remember how to spell Rej-, Rey-, Rei-...oh, you know, it's the capital of Iceland.) The educational value of trying to name all 50 words used in Green Eggs and Ham is...debatable, but at least it was fun!

For celebrity gossip (and other stuff) that's a cut above the TMZs and Perez Hiltons of the interwebs, I go to Jezebel. It's dirt with a funny (and often feminist) slant.

I could go on (I haven't even gotten to shopping! Zappos, how I love you!), but I'd rather turn it over to you: what are your favorite websites? Any hidden gems? Which sites do you get twitchy over not checking for more than 24 hours?

Earth Day Turns 39

Earth Day turns 39 this year. The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 and estimates are that 20 million Americans participated. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin is generally credited as being the principal founder of Earth Day.

Later, Senator Nelson related that the idea “…for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.” It would take several more years for Senator Nelson’s inspiration to see fruition. In the late 1960’s, he would tap into rising political participation on college campuses and grassroots networks to finally organize the first Earth Day.

Today, Earth Day is celebrated not only in the United States, but internationally. In 2008, events were held in Argentina, Bulgaria, Nigeria and Russia, to name just a few countries. Estimates are that upwards of half a billion people participated in Earth Day activities in some fashion. Senator Nelson strongly believed in harnessing the power of education to further environmental goals. It is rewarding to see how the concept of Earth Day has been adopted by many schools as an opportunity to educate young people about the environment and our role in protecting it.

There is no doubt that citizens have a variety of opinions on issues such as climate change, Artic drilling and the benefits of nuclear energy. We should not let these differences define us, however. Almost everyone agrees that being good stewards of our planet is not only important to our childrens’ future, but the morally correct thing to do. Earth Day is a wonderful way to recognize the effect we humans have on the planet and to share ideas for greener ways of living, but it shouldn’t be restricted to once every 365 days.

So, I took myself off to the East Bay suburbs last night, to a Borders in Pleasant Hill, CA, to attend a book signing by none other than Kate Gosselin herself of her new book, Eight Little Faces. I managed to get slightly lost along the way, and so arrived later than I’d planned – around 6:30 p.m. for a signing that was scheduled to begin at 7:00. As I drove up with my sister, we saw that there was a line stretched down the boulevard outside the store. That made me a little nervous, and I wondered exactly how long I’d have to wait in line or if I’d even get a chance to get my book signed.

The set up was actually quite efficient, and the line lead outside, I think, mostly because the Borders folks probably didn’t want it to snake all through the store. We bought a book and got a wristband, and settled down in line to wait. I did a quick headcount as I passed the line to go to the end, and would estimate there were about 400 people ahead of us (and by my count, another 100 behind us by the time we left). There were a lot of families, women with babies and teenaged girls in giggling gaggles, but overall I would say that the crowd ran the gamut and was diverse both ethnically and age-wise (not so much gender-wise, though it wasn’t entirely female by any means). My sister ended up running into two co-workers, both 20-something single women. I neither heard nor saw any evidence that anyone there was aware of the "controversy" surrounding the show.

Kate started signing a couple of minutes before 7 (my sister reconnoitered and reported back), and the line moved briskly. By 7:30, we were in front of the plate glass windows opposite which Kate was signing, albeit behind several shelves of books and a whole bunch of looky-loos (some people claimed they could see her, but I don’t see how; I definitely couldn’t). I have to say, there was a palpable air of excitement – more than I’d expect for a cable-tv “star”, even one that I know generates as much interest as Kate.

There were no rules for the signing other than get in line, have a book or DVD to be signed, and have a wristband. Borders employees came by and arranged the books for quick and efficient signing right before we got to the front of the line.

Probably by around 7:45, we were in sight of Kate herself. She looked…like Kate. It’s a little weird to see/hear a celebrity in person. There’s a bit of cognitive dissonance, I find, when you encounter in the flesh someone you're used to seeing on TV. But she looked good; I wouldn’t say she was “tiny” as has been reported, nor orange. Though she’s definitely quite tan, maybe a bit unnaturally so, her skin looked good - smooth and youthful. She was wearing a black dress (or possibly shirt and skirt set; I couldn’t quite tell). Her hair looked like her hair usually does. When we got up to the front, she signed and then handed the books back, saying, “Nice to meet you”. She was pretty much how I expected – definitely not cold, as I’ve heard some others complain (people who I suspect were inclined to dislike her already). But not super-warm, either. W hich is fine; I don’t think that’s her personality (it’s not mine, either), andI think it would come off phony if she tried to act that way. She was pleasant.

As we were leaving, we were allowed to stop briefly and take a photo – we got a shot of the woman in line behind us, who’d brought her young daughter. Kate perked up at the little girl, smiling and speaking directly to her. It was nice to see. I think she genuinely really loves kids and responds to them.

Thus ends my not very adventurous adventures. I’d love to report something scandalous, like a group of haters rushed Kate and smeared her with cupcake frosting, or she necked with her bodyguard between signings (I didn’t even notice the bodyguard, to be honest; my sister reported that he was “short”). But nothing all that exciting happened. And contrary to previous “reports”, I was allowed to look Kate in the eye, and she did not appear to view this as a sign of aggression. Proving, I guess, for once and for all that she is not a Rottweiller.

Huntington Beach Speaking Engagement

I had the pleasure of hearing Kate Gosselin speak tonight at the First Christian Church in Huntington Beach. Tickets were sold out but I was able to get tickets in the overflow and saw her speak by video. There were people of all ages and lots of people with books. Seating was on a first come first served basis.

There were 2 stools on the stage and Kate started off by pointing to the empty stool saying “There’s Jon just the way I like him, quiet.” She said she loved California and would like to live here some day. She said the reason she speaks alone is because they were gone so much from the kids that they wanted one parent home all the time. She does the speaking because she has “the gift of gab” and she likes to “travel and gab.”

Her message was of God and how he is in control of their lives. Everything she talked about was in Multiple Blessings or has been written about before. Her sincerity, sense of humor and self confidence struck me the most. She made fun of her controlling personality and said that she messes up and we’ve seen more than she’d like us to see of her messing up. She was witty and quick with a comeback to the pastor.

After she spoke the pastor came out to ask questions. He started to ask if she ever thinks about the six in the teenage years and she interrupted and said “No, I take one day at a time.” That brought laughter. He asked her if there was a situation where she felt God’s Grace and she said she didn’t deserve and wasn’t worthy to be the parent of 8 children.

Immediately after she spoke there was a book signing. You had to have a ticket and a book to see her. There were a lot of people working it to make the line go smoothly. We were told that Kate wanted to sign every book. She greeted everyone. There was a young couple with twins ahead of me. Kate spoke to them for a moment and there was laughter. When it was my turn I told her that I had been defending her on the internet since the show began and she sincerely thanked me.

It was an enjoyable experience and I’m glad I was able to go.

Always a Bridesmaid

Let's take a minute to talk about the plight of the bridesmaid. For every bride that wants the bridesmaids to like what they are wearing, there is a bride who picks the most outrageous, hideous monstrosity of a dress. Beaming with pride she says "Isn't this the cutest dress ever?." Oh, so adorable! Like the nice little canary yellow number my friend picked here. Who ever would decide "Hey, I think Canary Yellow is the perfect color for a dress?" I am Irish, my skin is the color of chalk. I may now have to take a page from Kate Gosselin's book and get a fake tan for this event. My only fear is that I will turn burnt sienna, thus further emphasizing the fact that THE DRESS IS YELLOW!

The latest edition of People Magazine features a five page spread (with pictures) on Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their 18 children. For those who watch their show or followed the family previously, much of the information isn’t new. There were a few details I had not heard before, however, that I thought were worthy of sharing:

· Jim Bob acknowledges that some people accuse the family of “overpopulating the world”, but he indicates that the family doesn’t “…worry about what other people think. We consider each child a blessing from God.”

· Michelle shares that they didn’t “start out planning that everyone’s name would start with a J…but once there was a pattern, we didn’t want anyone to feel left out.”

· Michelle took oral contraceptives for the first few years of marriage. After their first son, Joshua, was born she resumed. After becoming pregnant while on birth control and miscarrying, Jim Bob and Michelle came to believe that birth control had caused the miscarriage and decided to discontinue it permanently.

· Known for her sunny disposition, Michelle acknowledges darker days in the past when she struggled with little help and very tight finances. “There were times I felt like I was crying all day long.”

· Psychotherapist Dr. Jeanne Safer weighs in on the Duggar buddy system and the large role the older children play in raising the younger ones. She accuses Jim Bob and Michelle of “requiring them to be premature adults.”

· Michelle modestly admits that she hasn’t got it all figured out yet. She says, “You still think, ‘What did they do letting me come home with this baby?’ We’re still learning.”

Something else caught my eye – a picture of a diner style soda fountain in the Duggar kitchen. Wonder what Kate Gosselin would say about that?

Definition of a Child Exploiter? Depends on who you Ask

Child exploiter. If I had a dollar for every time a Gosselin detractor has casually tossed out this pejorative at not only the Gosselins, but those of us who admit that we like the program and do not think the Gosselins have undeniably and absolutely ruined their children’s future, I’d be a bit closer to that state-of-the art refrigerator that Kate Gosselin greedily beat me to.

The accusation – well, I guess it does what it’s intended to do– it rankles a bit. I don’t know about you, but I don’t consider myself as a child exploiter. I certainly don’t excuse the behavior of adults who would trade a child’s wellbeing for momentary or long lasting gain. As with many things in life, I think we part ways on where to draw the line. The real world abounds with many different examples that different individuals have different reactions to. During the early days of this blog, the case of children working on a family farm was brought up to illustrate that minors contributing to a family enterprise is not exactly a new concept. I may be going out on a limb here, but I think it is safe to assume most would not consider this child exploitation, even though minors are being compelled to help earn a living for the family.

Others have claimed that child exploitation has more to do with sacrificing your children’s privacy for financial compensation. We have discussed the example of celebrities who have given the green light to have their lives and that of their children broadcast on television. Non-celebrities such as the Duggar, Roloff and Hayes families have been brought up as well (although none with near the fervor the Gosselins engender). I tend to take each situation on its own relative merit and form an opinion accordingly. From what I have seen of these other programs, I would not characterize them as child exploitation. I don’t begrudge those who form a more wholesale and across-the-board opinion, but I kind of wish they would consider the possibility that those of us who view the matter differently from them actually do have morals and have considered the effect of all this on the children involved, including the Gosselin children.

All this brings me to a slightly more delicate subject. For many months, I have witnessed the cable news networks making hay out of the tragic Caylee Anthony case. And lo and behold, some blogs that call out Jon & Kate as child exploiters have joined in. As per usual, vile conjecture is the name of the game, such as speculation that Caylee’s uncle was also her father (apparently disproved by DNA evidence, by the way) or gossiping about a possible suicide attempt by her grandfather. Many apparently lap this up, and the ratings (and corresponding increased advertising revenue) confirm this. I personally don’t find entertainment in following the sad case of a young child who lost her life and I actually find the daily coverage on cable television and blogs exploitive (yep, I used the word). Why? A child is dead. The alleged murderer is in jail, awaiting trial. What exactly is to be gained from daily updates and loathsome rumor mongering? I certainly can’t see how a media circus will improve the chances that an impartial jury can be found, for example. The coverage mainly seems to satisfy many viewers appetite for sensational accounts of true crimes. In other words, it’s a form of entertainment for many. (I realize this is not a new phenomenon).

I guess my most fundamental issue with the coverage comes down to the fact that various media outlets and blogs are using the death of a child to fatten their bank accounts. More readers and viewers = increased advertising revenue. Do I accept that others (decent people) may see the matter differently, however? Absolutely. I wish those of us who do not consider the Gosselins child exploiters would be accorded the same consideration.

ABC News has an interesting article regarding anonymous posters on the Topix board.

"A California judge has denied Web forum Topix.com's request to withhold identifying information for 178 anonymous online commenters who are the targets of a defamation suit. The ruling, filed with the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, Calif., Friday, denied the company's motion to quash the subpoena and instructed it to meet with the couple filing the defamation suit to determine which documents are relevant to their case."

"Despite the qualified decision, Mark and Rhonda Lesher, the Clarksville, Texas, couple who filed the lawsuit in February, said the ruling brings them closer to identifying, and prosecuting, the anonymous detractors who they claim posted thousands of defamatory comments about them online."

There are several such Topix boards that have allowed questionable comments regarding the Gosselins. What are your feelings on this?

HATE BLOGS – OR, WHAT MOST OF US LEFT BEHIND IN THE EIGHTH GRADE

The mods here have hesitated to talk about this – we’ve considered it for a while. We know people talk about us. We talk about people, too – here and occasionally in emails. I tend to disbelieve people who claim that they never talk about others. This isn’t about “how dare anyone say anything about us! How can they be so mean?!” That would be pretty hypocritical at this point, I think.

But there’s a blog that’s existed almost as long as GDNNOP whose sole purpose is to “snark” on us. No, I’m not going to give out the name or the URL – it’s not my job to give exhibitionistic mean girls access to more attention.

Do I care? Yes and no. Most of the time, they are easy enough to ignore. They have the right to their opinions, and the fact that they’ve chosen to express those opinions in such an ugly way and in public, so to speak, says far more about them than it does about anyone else, whether they realize it or not (I’m quite sure they don’t).

Yet occasionally info makes its way to me that is a tad aggravating. Speculation becomes opinion becomes fact (sound familiar?). I’ve been accused of posting over there under another name, and it’s apparently become canon, in spite of the fact that I’ve never posted there in my life and have no desire to.

What makes this blog different or worse than other Gosselin-related blogs? Well, I don’t know that I think it’s worse ; the focus is different. At GWOP and a couple of other blogs I can think of, the mods make it a point to assert that they don’t talk about GDNNOP over there; why do we talk about them over here? That question has been asked and answered a number of times, to the point that I think the various sockpuppets have (finally!) gotten tired of asking. But the fact is that they haven’t needed to talk about GDNNOP on their blogs because they’ve had their “other blog” all along in which they call out, insult and lie about their “enemies” with impunity. It’s such an obvious (and cowardly, especially because they all use different names over there) way of “keeping their hands clean”.

What makes them objectionable? Calling out people who post on other sites by name. Constant accusations of sockpuppeting (I believe that’s what the psychiatric community calls “projection”, because I’m pretty damn sure every regular there has a drawer full of socks, one or more for every one of the many sites they post on). Constant put downs and personal insults, again often directed at specific, named individuals. Anyone who doesn’t agree with them is stupid and/or crazy. Do I think some anti-Gosselinites are one or both? Yes. Do I think they all are? No. I think if there’s any one trait that characterizes the rabid anti-Gosselinite, it’s not IQ or income or education level or even the number of cats they have. I think it’s a tendency towards extreme self-righteousness and the desire, even need, to feel better than other people as well as the tendency to spend far more time dwelling on other people’s perceived faults than on self-improvement.)

What about you? Have you ever encountered “mean girls” online or bullies online, either those who directed their hate at you or at others? How did you feel about it? Did you care, or did you believe, as my mother always told me, that one should not pay much attention to the opinions of those for who one cannot have any respect?

Hair Trend - Love It Or Leave It?

Many of us who either watch "Jon and Kate plus 8" or are at least aware of the show have noticed the response Kate's hair style has garnered. Whether you love her cut or hate it, there are many other examples of this asymmetrical cut and spiky style that are making their way into mainstream media. Celebrities like Rihanna, Victoria Beckham, Kiera Knightley, and Selma Blair have all had a similar style, so while Kate may be scrutinized for her fashion at least she is in good company.

US Births Break Record/40 Percent Of Us Births Out-Of-Wedlock

ABC News has an interesting article regarding the record breaking number of births seen in the United States recently. Apparently the birth rate has not been this high since the 1950s. 40 percent of these births are out-of-wedlock.

This article indicates that an explanation for this could be cultural trends and attitudes and cites Bristol Palin, the daughter of former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, as the " poster child for what you do when you get pregnant now."

It also states that abortions are at their lowest levels in decades and indicates that it is unclear whether this is due to better use of contraceptives, failure in proper use of contraceptives or declining availability of abortions.

Some other interesting facts:

"Among the states, Utah continued to have the highest birth rate and Vermont the lowest.

Today, U.S. women are averaging 2.1 children each. That's the highest level since the early 1970s, but is a relatively small increase from the rate it had hovered at for more than 10 years and is hardly transforming."

The other day I was restless. It was around 3am and I was wide awake. I couldn't help but feel uneasy. Something was changing around me. It was on this day that I looked into the face of my Gram but her eyes were vacant. She’s 79 and is in the beginning stages of dementia. I know what’s happening but still I say to her “Grandmom, why are you staring like that?” She looks at me and, for the moment, she’s back. She says “I don’t know” and follows it up with “This is what happens when you get old.” We laugh, go about our visit but I was haunted by that look. I know the truth is that she’s slipping away and there is nothing I can do about it.

When someone you love that much becomes less and less themselves, everyday is a tiny loss. There is a certain sadness that comes with watching someone or something fall apart. There is a feeling of defeat when you are powerless to control the outcome. I live by the mantra “it is what it is” but secretly I wonder “why does it have to be this way?”

The resounding echo of that question does not escape my thoughts, even as I participate in what is supposed to be mindless entertainment. I have been amazed at how human nature plays out in the blogosphere and, frankly, appalled at some of the behavior I’ve seen adults engage in. Anger, blame, feuds, personal attacks…stick around for a month and you’ll see it all in the Gosselin blogosphere from both sides. The sides are quick to point out the flaws in the others. We as a collective group of bloggers (again on both sides) are quick to dismiss and discredit. Marian Wright Edelman said “whenever two good people argue over principals, they are both right.” Are we good people? Is our character intact?

I know in the past I’ve been guilty of disregarding the feelings of others. I’ve done things that I’m not proud of. On the other hand I don’t regret that there has been conflict. I’ve learned so much from ‘debate’ and argument. In my view, conflict can be the catalyst of thought and imagination. It’s just that sometimes things go too far. Why? Why does it have to be this way?

As more time passes, I view the Gosselin situation in the way I view my gram’s condition. I don’t like it, I don’t want a family to be torn apart. At the end of the day, though, there is nothing I can do about it. The only thing we have control over is how we treat others in our pursuit of entertainment (or whatever the motivation for blogging may be). For certain, people on the opposite side of your views may dislike you. That’s not always easy (especially for someone like me who isn’t used to being disliked)…but “it is what it is.” I just wonder, can it be any different ever?

Arrest Imminent in Chandra Levy Case

CNN is reporting that police are close to making an arrest in the Chandra Levy murder case, one of Washington's most infamous cold cases. Levy, a California native, went missing on April 30, 2001. It was reported that Nadya Suleman was seen viewing this 1.24 million dollar house with the possibility of a future purchase. The most recent reports states that the " Dr. Phil" show rented this house for an interview with Ocotomom. No news yet on an air date.

Also, outspoken attorney Gloria Allred has announced HER plan to "provide for the medical and emotional needs" of Nadya Suleman's 14 children.

Reality of Reality TV

There is much speculation and assumption about what it's really like to have your family filmed for a reality show. The popularity of JK8 has spawned, as we well know, hate sites, fan sites and everything in between sites.

Many of these sites claim, based on viewing the show once a week (and in some cases, reviewing the taped show over and over and over. and over) that this is a terrible thing to do to children; some go so far as to call it child abuse.

To that, I say: "Seriously? Child Abuse? Come on."

However, is it all puppies and rainbows, happiness and joy? Are there real downsides to being a reality TV family?

I have ridden the pendulum on JK8: I began "hating" them without ever actually seeing an episode, transitioned to curious viewer who thought Kate was terrible, moved on to huge fan who adored the kids and have now comfortably settled at content to watch the cute kids and family dynamics and enjoying it.

Does this mean I think everything on the show is wonderful? Of course not. Lest I be called a "sheeple", being a fan doesn't entail agreeing with everything little thing, fridge cleaning obsessions and all.

After all, I adore my husband but, let me tell you, there are something’s he does that almost make me lose my religion. Does it mean I love him any less? Of course not.

I can enjoy watching JK8 and, at the same time, find things I don't agree with on it. Pretty neat, huh? Viewing a show in a balanced way, swinging neither to blissful stalker type love or ulcer forming hatred.

With that said, due to some recent experiences with a real life reality TV show family, I wanted to share what I see, both the good, the bad and the ugly.

I am still processing this and haven't come to any firm conclusions and pose the following information to spark discussion.

Through a social connection, I know a family who has been on a series in the reality TV format. Through my interaction with the family and the kids, here's what I've noticed about being a reality TV family.

Some things are scripted. There was an episode I was filmed for (don't know if my section will air or not) and we had to do about four "re-takes." It was supposed to be something spontaneous and natural; however, the cameraman/producer kept having us re-do this "surprise" moment until they got it right. Is this good or bad? Did this ruin the moment for the kids by taking away the actual surprise? Will the children's lives now be scripted and lived for the cameras? Hard to tell.

Another scripted thing is trips. There were quite a few "trips" planned by the producer for the family to make an episode. On a few of those, the children, did indeed, miss school. Could there be a positive in this? Perhaps the children learned new things that day; after all, education doesn't just happen in the classroom. Perhaps the children would not have been able to take this trip without the network's dime funding it and, in that way, this scripted moment was a chance for them to experience something new. Again, hard to tell.

Another way I've noticed being a reality TV family has an impact: the children do feel socially awkward. On the other hand, suddenly being "popular" by being TV "stars" has also given the children more confidence (socially) than they had before. A healthy trade off? We shall see.

And finally, being a reality TV show family can force one to alter their life for the cameras. For example, one of the children had a chance to participate in a social function, which would have involved a slight appearance change, which would have been temporary. The child, in this instance, was “not allowed” to participate by altering their appearance as the producers wanted “consistency” for the show.

Did this child lose out on an important childhood ritual or rite? Did they have to take flack from their peers? Did they feel resentful? The verdict isn't in it.

What is a positive is the chance to further the children's education. Without this show, I know for a fact, that the children would NOT be able to go to college without substantial loans or scholarships. Most of the money
made from this show is going towards college funds for the children.

And, so far, the family hasn't changed. They are still the down to earth people they've always been. Will it stay that way? Stay tuned.

Is Kate mad at (or mad about) Jon?

Many people in the Gosselin blogosphere world say that Kate is an angry person — especially when it comes to how she treats Jon. Many say something along the lines of "Kate's just being Kate." It seems the recently-aired lecture regarding coupons struck a nerve with some viewers. Was it really about the coupon and saving twenty bucks? Possibly.

Martha Brockenbrough, a published author and writer for Parenting recently wrote Mad at Dad – We love our husbands — so why are we so angry at them, so often? Apparently, the story has hit home with many moms, as it is currently the most popular read article at Parenting.com. You can view the article in its entirety by clicking here.

Parenting surveyed more than 1,000 mothers on MomConnection – an online panel of moms. Here are a few of the statistics:

* 46% of moms get irate with their husbands once a week or more.
* 44% are peeved that dads often don’t notice what needs to be done around the house with the kids. This number jumps to 54% for moms with three-plus children.
* 40% are angry that their husbands seem clueless about the best way to take care of kids.
* 40% are mad that Dad cannot multitask.
* 31% say their husbands don’t help with chores – in fact, they generate more.
* 33% of moms say their husbands aren’t shouldering equal responsibility and are less concerned than they are about their children’s basic needs, like nutrition and clothing — a number that rises to 41% for those with 3+ kids.
* 50% of moms tell us their husbands get more time for themselves.
* The lack of “time off” is a huge issue for the moms who carry the most anger. Over 60% of moms who get mad weekly — and almost three-quarters of those who are angry every day – feel this way.
* 60% of moms don’t tell their friends what they’re going through, or they make light of it.

According to this article, Kate Gosselin, like many moms, gets peeved (and pissed) at their spouse. As prevalent or ridiculous as some of the instances may be to many, Jon and Kate seem to get through these harried moments and move forward. Which, according to Martha (Brockenbrough) is a “good thing.”
