"In other news, TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8" had its most-watched episode ever at 9:30 p.m. Monday, averaging 3.2 million viewers, including 1.3 million women 25-54 and 1.4 million 18-49."
That's only 1/7th of Spongebob on Nickelodeon, though, according to the rest of the Hollywood Reporter article. I'd like to see how it fares with other "reality" shows on cable that seem, to me, to be more widely known: Girls Next Door, Flavor Of Love, etc.
But yeah, the fact that viewership is growing seems to indicate no backlash is happening.

I think you that like it are blind to those who are against the fact there are no boundries/laws to protect the children, I watch the show, (my house is not hooked up to a neilsen box) then I email any advertiser from the show. I dont want "backlash" on the Gosselins, I just dont think its fair for them to work 2 days for a photo shoot (3 hours in 93 degree weather), Kate and Jon's lies do get annoying...."we only wanted on....bs she knew how many eggs were being put in her. So from the start of the show its a lie. Lieing about how they have to save up for the kids special days when TLC pays for them....so many lies so little time. Great example of fine Christians....oh yeah the love offerings dont even get me started on them. I hope they get so popular that the IRS is making sure that they pay taxes on all thr freebess but the honest christians that they are probably dont claim them.
This was one of the first times I was actually able to put your comments through. We welcome you in this discussion as long as you don't swear, point fingers and berate.
You must get your facts straight though. Kate did not have any "eggs put in her." That is not the type of fertility treatment she had. I wonder how many of your other opinions are based on misinformation.
One more thing, this blog is for entertainment purposes only. We have no mission statement and we are not going to join you in a crusade to stop the show. There are many people that blog here including myself that think children in Reality TV shows need monitoring. There are many that don't. I try not to think of it as pro or anti, but just people that want to have a good discussion.
Anne, I absolutely see where laws and restrictions should be put into place for these kids. I am more and more convinced of this every day..HOWEVER
It is absolutely ridiculous to claim that this woman implanted herself with 7 eggs in the hopes of "never having to work again" (Julie's words). That statement, (along with others that claim she did this on purpose) is absurd.
As far as the IRS, I'm sure they're on to the Gosselins and others who speak regularly in church. Love offerings HAVE to be claimed to the IRS. They are income. Since the IRS can take up to 3 years to audit one tax return, if they aren't filing taxes appropriately, we'd be hearing about it pretty soon. I doubt they'd be that stupid.
Anne is basically reciting the talking points and marching orders from GWoP. The one that always makes me laugh hysterically is that, somehow, Kate INTENTIONALLY had herself implanted with sextuplets (actually, septuplets). Oh, and that Jon "may" not be the father and that's why his mother does not acknowledge the 'tups. No matter that you can see Jon in some of the children (especially in his doppelganger, Joel).
It was all a plan, you see. The cunning Kate KNEW that her ticket to stardom was to knock herself up with seven babies at once (she saw the attention the McCaughey's got) and then shop her story to the highest bidder. Even with the health risks to herself and her unborn children, she was determined. Unfortunately, one fetus didn't make it, but that's okay. She was still even with the McCaughey's in TOTAL children. Cha-ching. Despite the fact that a doctor would have to be in on the plot, and no doctor is going to willingly do such a thing with the risks in having all babies be healthy (kidding aside, the Gosselins are incredibly lucky that none of the 'tups have health issues).
My eyeballs still hurt from rolling back into my head while reading GWoP conspiracy theories posing as "fact." And since this whopper is a theory fueled by Julie, who told them that Kate "shopped" their story to the highest bidder, my bullspit detector went off almost immediately. No agenda there, huh?
I actully think that that the hate blogs have fueled the fire as far as viewership goes, I mean all it's really done is bring more attention to the show. I definitley think that there should be laws governing the children's camera time, it's very surprising to me that those laws don't exist yet. It's annoying that those of us who don't HATE the Gosselins with a fiery passion and lambaste them for every move they make/ freebie they recieve, are sometimes accused of not caring about the children. Anyhoo- you all have a good afternoon!
Why would J&K get backlash from stuff written on the internet? People like Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton get arrested for DUI's where they could have killed someone and they don't get backlash. Heck, Paris has her own show where she is looking for a new BFF. For people to become outrage about J&K , they would have to do something totally horrific and unthinkable to their children in public.
And since this whopper is a theory fueled by Julie, who told them that Kate "shopped" their story to the highest bidder, my bullspit detector went off almost immediately. No agenda there, huh?
Jon's answer to how the show started contradicted the episode "How We Got Here" where Kate said that she sent a tape of her family to various production companies/TV channels. She explained that they wanted a record of their children since they were too busy to film it themselves. Jon mentioned someone looking at their website and then contacting them.

I guess I'm just never going to understand why people like you care so much. I understand having issues with the show, and with the choices that the Gosselins have made. I disapprove of plenty of the choices that other people make, all of the time. But to go from disapproval to comparisons to murderers? Is ridiculous, IMO, and does your "cause" no favors.
Calling the Gosselins liars based on rumors, speculation and conjecture also doesn't make you look reasonable.
Attacking them for their religious beliefs (and again assuming, with no evidence, that they are not "good Christians") makes you look small-minded and prejudiced. J&K don't go on about what wonderful Christians they are. They talk about their faith, but that's a different thing. I am not Christian, but I get sick of Christians being accused of hypocrisy because they are not perfect. I believe one of the basic tenets of the religion is that everyone is a sinner. I don't think being a Christian obligates one to be moral; being a human being does that.
I know that GWoP claims that they can advocate for more than one cause at a time, but still...the "campaign" against the Gosselins, with all of its outrageous exaggerations, half-truths and outright lies, seems to me to be akin to going after a fly with a semi-automatic weapon. There are so many bigger fish to fry in this world. Work towards legislation to protect children on reality TV, if that's what you want. But no one is ever going to take you seriously until you tone down (way down) on the corrosive anger.
Please also note that BOTH of those things could have happened. Because both of them at various times have said BOTH things. That the FIRST time someone originally contacted them about the babies and they did the original special, but after that once there was interest it was mentioned to try to "SHOP" the story about the family so that they would have both the memories and some money since Jon's job wasn't stable.
People are always hoping to try to "catch" them in some sort of lie but in this case they weren't misinforming or not telling the truth.
The most ridiculous thing of all is how they all still watch the show! Wouldn't miss it, rewatch it, rewind it...
Makes no sense. Does anyone know a single person who weekly watches a show they despise? Yea, I don't think so! It is the height of hypocrisy and these haters really need to use their energy for something else.
GWoP. Jon and Kate aren't going anywhere. Millions....millions of people love their show.
I appreciate your accuracy over the details of the show. I believe you were the poster who told me that Jon (not Kate who many other posters had attributed that statement to) said that they couldn't afford these all the time for financial reasons.
I presume that you hate the Gosselins and that you are against the show. Yet, you know so much about it.
guinevere, I strongly agree with your post. The part about there being bigger fish to fry resonates with me. The other night, Dateline NBC featured an hour piece on child exploitation in Cambodia. (This piece may have been a rerun.) Though I was not able to watch the show, I was able to glimpse the summation. I believe they also featured child advocates who have journeyed to the country to rescue some of those children.
Now, child advocacy, I believe, goes beyond complaining day in and day out on the Internet. One can continue to proclaim they are child advocates fighting for the rights of the Gosselin children, but if that's all one has to offer, then, that's not really child advocacy in my opinion.
I can appreciate that there people who genuinely have concern for the Gosselin kids, and some of them can express their views without admonishing Jon and Kate. It's only natural that some would be worried for the children because even though we're only viewers, we have grown fond of the kids.
However, there are those self-proclaimed children's advocates who only spend their time complaining about the Gosselin parents, and some of them aren't even above making snarky remarks about the children. It's not to say that there aren't any fans who don't pass their time glued to blogs or message boards like IMDB, but it's baffling to me that when some of those so-called advocates wake up in the morning, one of the first things they do is get on a message board or blog and continue to post remarks against Jon and Kate and/or the children. They pick up where they left off from the day before, and they stay on those boards for the whole day. Complaining or pointing out Jon and Kate's mistakes doesn't equal to being an active child advocate. If they are advocates, they should step away from their PCs or laptops and see about what they can do to help pass a law with regards to children and reality shows, or better yet, maybe they can donate their time to helping children who are in more dire need than the Gosselin kids.
Amen vivaironlady I could not agree more! Although I'm sure if "they" post here "they" will point out that also write scathing letters of disapproval to Juicy Juice and JOhnson & Johnson!
i'm sure "they" would point it out ;) but i don't think all of "they" wrote to juicy juice and johnson & johnson. those that did at least did something other than post online complaints, so, i guess that's something.
To the anon poster that just posted a good point on here, I am sorry but I had to delete your entry. If you could take a second to re-post...click on name/URL and put anything your heart desires in there.

Interesting info. Those seem like pretty good numbers for a cable t.v. show.
I guess the often talked about "backlash" hasn't really come to fruition...? :-)

The second episode? Maybe the increased numbers were people checking out the school episode - to verify that the kids are really going?

Anne,
I think that there has to be some safeguards put into place to protect ALL children who are involved in any part of the entertainment industry.
But you lose me when you hint that they deliberately got pregnant with high order multiples so they could cash in on them.
