Jessica A

Are you related to Jessica M?

You can be for whoever you want. Or both. Jessica A could be pro and Jessica M could be against.

Jessica A. and/or Jessica M.,

I'm a little confused - are you the same person??

Welcome to this blog. It can be a great place to discuss both sides. I'm never quite sure why people ask this question of this blog, because why does it have to be either for or against the Gosselins? I think you'll find that there are people with varying opinions about the Gosselins, but that it's still fun to discuss the issues.

I've been waiting for an open discussion so I could bring up another show. Did anyone else watch "A Very Duggar Wedding?" I watched it, and it was very interesting, to say the least! My jaw was on the floor the majority of the episode.

I don't usally watch the Duggars, but I did watch that one and I have to say, my jaw dropped also. I just don't know what to think about the Duggars. I think they are a very loving family,I just think they are a little weird. That is just my opinion, maybe I am the one who is weird, I don't know.

What's up with the 2 Jessica's posting 2 minutes apart? Odd...

Anyway, I wouldn't say I'm for or against them. I'd like to think I am able to form a different opinion on different things about the show. Some stuff I like, some not so much.

Does anyone watch LOST?

Scarfoot and Kinley:

I watched the majority of the Duggar Wedding. I was kind of reading and doing other stuff.

I am on the fence somewhat. I think there are plenty of positive things about this family and because I have seen the negativity against the Gosselins (much of which I consider unfair) I have made an effort to be more open minded about families and people that are different from me.

That said, the whole Jim Bob/Josh "talk" seemed so staged and it was actually pretty uncomfortable to watch.

Who is the little guy (Josiah?) who is about 8 and talks like he is 20. He is fun to watch.

And I love cousin Amy. She's adorable. I think it's funny she goes on all the Gosselin outings. I am sure there is no manipulation there from the producers - right? That only happens in Gosselin-land! :-)

Long time reader, never posted until now. Is it normal to be nervous for your fist post? lol I just got laid off, so I have some time on my hands until I find a new job.

I think the show has run it's course, and maybe there will be no more blogs on the JK8 show, so I should get my 2 cents in now.

Wrapping up the show is a good thing, IMO. I do not like Jon and Kate as they are portrayed on TV and I do see the harm in purposefully allowing the world to see every aspect of your life, good and bad. Now, I've read enough here to know that I must qualify that statement with we don't see every aspect of their lives. But seriously, to J and K, go on and soar with the newfound career as experts or speakers or whatever you choose to do. Let the little ones settle down in their "forever house" and enjoy the rest of their lives with the money that they have made for the betterment of their family. The family is successful now, so I think it would be better to choose to leave with some grace than to be cancelled.

As for the Dugger's, I don't watch regularly. I do like Michelle for the most part but her husband is a bit creepy with the women's role designation and just his overall vibe. But I guess they could be portrayed in whatever light the network desires, right?

I want a cool pic too! Maybe next time I will have a blogger account like everyone else has. Will any size pic work?

I do. Have you been enjoying the new season? I think it's been pretty good so far. I feel like we're finally getting *some* insights into the mysteries of the island, and the writers aren't just piling more unexplained stuff on us. I'm glad it's back.

Jessica, I was FOR them, but then they bought a new refrigerator, so now I AGAINST them.

Ha!

Welcome, Meaghan! I've never had any problem putting a pic in and having blogger size it okay, so I think any size will work for an avatar.

I was also awaiting Open Discussion time...

Did anyone catch Oprah last week when she had the Olsen Twins on? What do you think?

They said they've been working since they were 5 months. Now, they are moguls. On one hand, they seemed so normal, yet on the other you can tell there's just something so isolated about them. They were very polite. I think Oprah was quite impressed and realized that they weren't anything at all of what she expected.

What does everybody else think?

Anonymous said...

Theresa,

You've brought up an interesting issue. Do the people who believe that the Gs are exploiting their children and making money off the children also extend that same judgement to the families of other child stars? The Olsen twins, who started working as infants, are another example of kids who've been in the business prior to their ability to consent to their own involvement.

Anonymous said...

I watched the Olsen twins on Oprah too. Mary Kate looked healthy which was nice to see. I was struck at how normal they are. Both extremely hard working and intelligent. It's funny to see how different people are from how they are portrayed in gossip rags.

Please forgive if this shows up twice, Ive been having issues with the different blogs I read on blogger

Ive made mention of my feelings on the Duggars in the past, but I can't miss another opportunity. I am still patiently waiting for the explanation as to how they are NOT exploiting their kids, you know how they are so different from the Gosselins. I see lots of little kids and cameras around. I suspect its because Michelle is sugary sweet and does whatever her boss JimBob tells her. Those poor older girls are responsible for the day to day raising of the younger kids. JB and Michelle couldnt handle the kids when the girls left to make dresses. You know if Kate was ever shown blanket training, heads would explode but Michelle does it and its a-ok. They got a houseful of free new furniture, Michelles mullet hair is more horrifying than Kates ever could be, they buy a $75000 bus and then buy nasty used shoes for the kids....yeah I'm not seeing the righteousness of this family. Not at all. Im pretty sure Jessa is going to be the first one who runs for the hills. Oh and enough of Amy already! Anna seems sweet enough, but I truly feel pity for her.

Gina said...

I don't regularly watch the Duggars, but I really wanted to watch the wedding. I am fascinated by their beliefs, although I do not agree with a majority of them. My husband screwed up the DVR and deleted the recording, so I haven't watched it yet.

I heard on another board that when the older girls went down early for the wedding, and Jim Bob and J-Michelle were in charge, the little kids went buck wild. I guess that was bound to happen when they let their children raise their children.

On a related note, I watched my first episode of "Tots and Tiaras" (?) on TLC. HOLY CRAP! Some of these moms are taking a huge risk, IMO. Don't they remember Jon Benet? Those that accuse J&K for exposing their children to pedophiles need to get harping on this show. I will not be watching it again. Creepy.

themrs said...

as far as the duggar wedding is concerned, i read elsewhere a letter about this written by a family member of the bride. he discussed how much scripting was involved. one example he gave was "the talk". he said that TLC asked jim bob to do that. he said that in their religion those things are talked about for years leading up to marriage, not on the wedding day. if that's true, that would explain why it seemed so forced. i know some people who are of the same religious background and i thought that seemed "off" too. i wonder how long the duggars will agree to do the show if the editing continues this way. of course, i've thought the same about J&K. if all my "moments" were edited together to make me look the way Kate does i think i'd have to bow out!

Anonymous said...

I actually never understood the appeal of the Olsen twins. I thought they kind of looked like little monkeys on Full House (I know, that's mean) so I didn't understand the "cuteness" of them robotically reciting lines.

I definitely think they morphed into more attractive young ladies as they grew and they certainly have business savvy.

The Duggars? I am a fencesitter. They seem loving and happy and it works for them so great. I am amazed at how calm the parents seem to be. And how funny the part about Jim Bob's hair and his habitual use of 3 or 4 cans of AquaNet a month!!!

And the younger boy is too funny with his wiser-than-his-years comments.

I almost feel like Anna is a third cousin with the way she looks and wears her hair. I feel its Ok to be modest and all, but why does that mean they are so similar in their styles? Is there only one way?

And Lost: I loved it the first year, got "lost" the second year and then made up for it last year (this is the fourth year??). I think they did a good job of making more sense instead of always confusing the audience.

I loved Anya's comment about not being a fan since the new fridge.

I have been majorly wanting to clean my fridge since I saw the episode where Kate cleaned hers.

In high school or college, did you ever have a boyfriend break up with you for someone else? You are completely devastated and do anything to find out information as to the whys, wheres, whens, etc? It becomes an obsession to a point. Your friends tell you everytime they see him and her together, what they're wearing, how fat and ugly the girl is, etc. I remember once when a boyfriend dumped me that I focused on the fact that the new girl had fat arms, which in retrospect wasn't even true. But that is all I had to go on. Anyhow, that is what GWOP reminds me of. A group of teenagers finding everything wrong with someone they don't know. And then they latch onto the smallest of material things (like refrigerators or haircuts or gum) and run with it as far as they can run. I picture them giggling like maniacs over the dumb things the posters over there say, like the fact that Larry King Live called Jon "Jane." Which isn't even funny at all, but they will bring that point up constantly, as if it is sweet revenge on the Gosselins or something. "Haha, Larry called Jon by the wrong name. That'll show those Gosselins what losers they are and then their show will certainly be cancelled!" They have absolutely nothing of substance to discuss. Their feelings are hurt by the Gosselins because I honestly think some of the no-lifes over there felt like they personally knew the Gosselins; and then the Gosselins went and broke up with them.

In high school, you eventually get over the break up. It seems like the GWOPpers aren't resting until they see the family crash and burn. Which means the kids crash and burn, too, right? Hypocrites.

I personally don't really like the show anymore as I think it's run its course, so I don't care one way or the other if it goes off the air. But I do have a problem with people who attack a family for no real good reason.

...I'm never quite sure why people ask this question of this blog, because why does it have to be either for or against the Gosselins ..

I can see someone asking if they are new and don't want to be involved in a hate blog. Not sure why there's two Jessicas, was there an “oops” in there?

Scarfoot, I keep meaning to tell you, you're not the only one who doesn't have dvr. They sound nice, but I'm saving for a dishwasher, no comparison on the importance there. :)

Meaghan, I'm one who also thinks they should end the show. But lately, since it seems to be working for them, I'm not sure. It depends what they show us of the children. I personally do not care for some of Kate's traits, but think she loves her kid and is trying to provide. I was nervous my first few posts, it was all new to me and no idea to whom you're talking. It's nice here with other topics for fun that aren't about J&K.

Theresa, I didn't see the Olsen twins on Oprah. However, when I have seen them I have wondered if they have perfected their public face vs their real selves as a way to keep their lives somewhat private. They've been at it a long time. I wonder how it feels to be treated as one and the same all their life, there's got to be a lot of that. One of them was on Weeds and did a good a job.

Babs, I agree with your post. Their attitude seems personal to me.

I've only watched the Duggars a couple of time. It never did catch my interest. I also didn't realize the Toddlers and Tiaras was going to be an ongoing show.

Anonymous said...

I agree with JerseyGirl and the points she made about the Duggars. I've been asking haters forever why, if they are such child advocates, do they not throw a fit about the Duggar's show, LPBW, Snoop Dogg's Fatherhood, Toddlers and Tiaras, Super Nanny, etc.? Of course I never get an answer or I get some dumb answer like, "Kate's a monster and her hair is ugly." Wow! Real intelligent conversation there.

And because these haters cannot answer that question I know they are NOT REAL child advocates. If they were....

1. they wouldn't be blogging about hair, clothes, earrings, refrigerators, dirt, crayons, etc. Instead they'd use the blog to gather people to go after the show as hard as they could until it went off the air. But they don't.

2. if they were such advocates they wouldn't keep watching each week. They know more about the show than I do and I'm a fan. They even admit to pausing and slow-motioning the show just to catch certain things, like vents on the frig. Yeah, that's really advocating for kids.

3. if they were such child advocates they'd be after ALL shows (like I mentioned above) that supposedly exploit kids. But they don't.

Just goes to show that they are full of it! They are so big on wanting Kate to be "real." To be "honest." Well how about they just come out and say why they really blog and watch the show. And that reason is plain and simple. THEY JUST HATE KATE. They DO NOT watch and blog because they are child advocates. Who's the liar now HATERS?

Jersey Girl, this is a question that I've asked many times. The illogical answer that I always receive from non-fans/haters is that the other families have outside income and do not derive all of their income from the show.

That's the excuse... but it's a lame excuse if you ask me. The Duggars show began after TLC finished up their humongous house and completely furnished and decorated it. While they have outside income, I doubt that Jim-Bob, who is supposed to be a good businessman, would be doing this show for free!

The Roloff's farm has undergone at least three renovations since their show began. When LPBW began, the Roloffs were having financial difficulties. Matt had lost his job was just starting his stool business. Amy had gone back to work. Since their show, they have done major upgrades to the farm, put in a beautiful swimming pool and turned their house into a $1M+ showplace. They did not do this selling pumpkins. They did it from the income from their enormously popular show.

The hatred for the G's is so overwhelming that no logical answer is ever going to come to this question. If the Gosselins do it it's wrong; if the other reality shows do it it's not wrong.

All three shows prominantly feature their kids. Granted, the Gosselin kids were babies when this all started, so, yes, there were bath, diaper changing and potty training scenes, but that has not been the case since they became older.

IMHO, there are two standards in reality show blog land... One for the Gosselins and one for everyone else....

Welcome Meaghan.

I respect your point of view and I know there are many others here who feel the same way.

I am not sure how it's going to play out. There would seem to be a natural end coming when the sextuplets start school (or at least a move to a few specials a year).

I agree about the part of leaving with grace. I don't think they are in danger of being cancelled (based on the ratings), but it's always good to get out when you are on top, i.e. leave them wanting more...

I look forward to seeing your avatar! :-)

too funny said "if they are such child advocates, do they not throw a fit about the Duggar's show, LPBW, Snoop Dogg's Fatherhood, Toddlers and Tiaras, Super Nanny, etc.?"

ok, i'll bite, although i hope i'm not considered a hater :)

IMO, shows like toddlers and tiaras are exploitive. i won't get into my feelings on child pageants but let's just say they creep me out.

as far as super nanny, those kids are filmed for one week. that's a big difference from several times a week for the first four years of their lives.

the snoop dog show i've never seen, but i'd bet it's highly exploitive. i can't say though since i've never seen it.

for LPBW, the difference for me is that the kids are all older, which to me means they can make a better decision for themselves if they want to be filmed.

for the duggars, i'm on the fence. one thing i do appreciate though is that because of their modesty, we NEVER see partially clothed children, bathing, etc. they wouldn't even let their kids be shown in bathing suits.

i'm no child advocate so i'm not bashing any of those shows i said are exploitive, just pointing out the difference to me personally.
thoughts?

Anonymous said...

No TheMrs, I don't consider you a hater at all. At least you can give some answers and honest opinions without tossing in a jab at Kate personally like I usually get when I ask.

I see how you think that some shows are ok because the kids aren't show for that long, nor are they in diapers and stuff like that. But, isn't just being on TV considered exploiting the kids regardless of all of that?

At least that's what the true haters say. To them just being on TV is enough and bad and cosidered to be exploiting the kids. That's why I always ask "What's the difference between J&K's show and the others.? Why is it ok for them and not J&K?"

I understand you tried to answer, but if just being on TV, in underwear or not, is considered being exploited, they why not all the outrage for the other shows.

This isn't a question directed at you personally. This is mainly for those that say "Just being on TV is exploiting those kids!" So, if that is true I want to know how J&K's show differs from the others and why is it ok for the other shows to exist and not J&K's?

Samantha@IW said...

I like the Duggars, I want to like them, I think they are a loving family doing what they believe is best for them- but sometimes they say/do things that make me cringe. I can't help it.

I watched the wedding episode and I cant help but find Josh's father in law strange. . . totally didnt get his explanation about not dancing at the wedding. If you cant dance with a woman at a wedding and not think rampant lustful thoughts you have major issues.

I love the little boy who narrates a lot and sounds so grown up, he's a cutie! Jessa is beautiful, even in her long skirts she looks like a model.

themrs said...

if that's their reasoning, then it's ridiculous (no surprise there!) i don't personally think that just having your kids on tv is exploiting. the part about J&K that tends to bother me the most is that the show is their income. but that being said, i do'nt see the reason for extreme hate! settle down people, these are strangers LOL

Anonymous said...

I personally don't like the Duggars or their show. I mostly don't like the religious aspect of it. Nor do I like how the older kids have to take care of the younger ones all the time. Michelle had those kids, let her take care of them. And, it almost seems to me like the kids can't have their own identities. They have to dress the same/certain way, act a certain way, etc.

Anyway, I don't like the show. So, I don't watch. Plain and simple. I'm not out there encouraging others to ban it or dislike it just because I don't like it. Too bad others can't do the same when it comes to J&K.

Anonymous said...

Fair enough TheMrs. But, can I ask you, why is it that you don't like that they make money from the show? Do you not think that they should be compensated for their time and for allowing the cameras inside their lives?

Yes, I know they ultimately gave the permission for them to do so, but, if someone came up to me and said "I want to film your life.", I'd be saying "And how much are you gonna pay me?" I think most people would do the same regardless of what they say.

I just think that, since the show takes up such a large part of their life and time, they should be paid. Not many people do things for free these days.

If the interest is out there, and the producers want to keep it going, then I think the Gosselins should be nicely compensated for their time and everything else that comes along with having such a show.

I didn't see any outrage either when Aunt Jodi wanted to be paid for being on the show. Instead everyone agreed she deserved it. And everyone was mad that she didn't get it. It's like a double standard again. It's ok for everyone else. Just not J&K. And this last paragraph in not directed to you personally TheMrs. I'm just talking out loud in general to everyone about how I feel and how I see it.

Anonymous said...

What I don't get is that GWoP started a Toddlers and Tiaras pages about that exploitative show and the most comments they've had is 14. It's just as bad, but it's not as much fun to be mean if it's not Kate.

If you define exploiting kids as showing them on TV for money, if they have money or jobs or not, it should be called exploitation for everyone. Period.

rain88 said...

Too funny said.. didn't see any outrage either when Aunt Jodi wanted to be paid for being on the show.

That's one theory. The other is that Jodi was upset because the show wanted to compensate Jodi for her time and Kate refused. When Jodi found out about that both her and Kevin were upset and asked Kate if it was true. We don't know for sure what happened but it's not a fact that Jodi wanted to be paid.

Just being on TV is exploiting those kids!" So, if that is true I want to know how J&K's show differs from the others and why is it ok for the other shows to exist and not J&K's

All Reality shows have their detractors. It's not true that Jon and Kate are the only ones. The level of detractors is likely equal to the level of popularity.

I watched the Duggar wedding. I tolerate the Duggar family because:

1. They show their faith and although I don't agree with all aspects of it, I respect them for their beliefs.

2. I find their unique style interesting and I guess in some small way I admire them for living that way.

3. I don't think there is anything wrong about courtship in today's world. More power to you.

4. Jim Bob is actually very successful and self-sufficent without the show...I know this how? Strong ties in NW Ark. He is not poor, just frugal.

5. I admire that they have not shown the potty or diaper shots. They seem to have an understanding of personal privacy.

I watched the duggar wedding episode and the biggest issue I had with it was when Jim Bob said something to the effect of it was hard with the girls being gone and having a these little ones. I was just wondering what is going to happen should those older girls want to leave home soon. There are still going to be alot of little ones.

I don't find the show particularly exploitive (no more than any other reality show), but I have a hard time not having judgment about child beauty pageants. The episode this past week featured a little girl named Story - I'm pretty sure her hair was bleached, I know she had a fake tan and a manicure and pedicure, plus a pound of makeup slathered on her face at pageant time. She is five years old. She looked just like Jon Benet to me. She kept being told (by her mother and her "coach" - five years old and she has a beauty pageant coach!) to smile - her smile was more just a baring of her teeth and it looked totally phony. I saw no evidence that she was enjoying any of it.

Again, trying not to be super-judgmental - people can do things differently from the way I'd do them and still have everything turn out okay. But I do have issues with teaching little girls at such a young age to emphasize their looks and smiling and being what you think the world wants you to be. I don't think it can possibly contribute to building a strong sense of self. And I also think that the way beauty is presented in the worst of these pageants is kind of twisted - it's very, very fake.

as far as super nanny, those kids are filmed for one week. that's a big difference from several times a week for the first four years of their lives.

I do see the difference there, but I also think that if you really believe something is wrong, it's wrong if you do it once or if you do it 500 times. I've seen stuff with kids on "Supernanny" that I would think would be pretty embarrassing to the kids. Not in a "scarred for life" way - since I don't advocate that POV for the Gosselin kids - but for the kids in school, enough to get them teased. Plus, I would imagine (?) "Supernanny" has a bigger audience, since it's on ABC? I don't know. I do know that I mentioned a couple of months ago seeing a scene from SN where a little boy was shown peeing against a tree outside; his penis was blurred but the urine stream was not. Now THAT, I considered unnecessary, and worse than any "potty shot" or bath scene we've seen on "J&K+8" in the past. It didn't offend or disturb me, I just thought it was unnecessary, crude and intrusive.

Really? I thought I'd heard that they allowed the birth of their latest daughter to be filmed. Maybe I misunderstood.

I do think emphasizing body image in little girl's is a problem in the making. I have never been comfortable seeing little girl's dressed to look older than they are.

Mom Duggar consented. It was a c-section. I didn't see any genitalia or blurring. So yea, I think they have the personal privacy of themselves and their children covered! She won't even show her belly for an ultrasound.

Eh, I guess I just don't see such shots with "nothing showing" as quite as bad as showing blurred genitals and urine streams.

You don't see any genitalia in the Gosselin potty shots, either. I don't think privacy only relates to "private parts" - from my perspective, undergoing a C-section would definitely be "private" and something a person with a strong sense of privacy would not share with the world.

Rain,

You know as time goes on I am not sure I believe any of the hoopla Julie spilled on us. I think it is probably more accurate that Jodi and Kevin were being impacted by their presence on the show and it got too big to handle.

Just my opinion, but showing Kevin and Beth in the last epi gives me reason to think that they are indeed still apart of Jon and Kate's life and Julie was just full of hot air.

Anonymous said...

Guin,

The difference is an adult gave consent to be filmed. I bring up "genitalia" because you have used that word so many times in the past when the issue of potty scenes comes up.

I think the Duggar's view of pregancy and birth is a gift from God so I can totally see where Michelle would CHOOSE to share that event.

To each their own, Guin.

The baby didn't give consent. Perhaps she wouldn't want something as private as her birth filmed.

I still see an inconsistency in your POV re consent. I asked a while back if it was okay to take any pictures of your children before they can give informed consent, but IIRC you never responded.

There is an episode of J&K that shows one child completely naked,it is the cutting room floor episode. The part where J&K takes the twins to the circus and Beth is watching the little kids and changing one of the boys, they didn't even blur it out. I was shocked. If I were Kate I would still be fighting TLC over that.

I haven't heard anyone comment on Larry Birkhead being on Larry King the same show Kate was on. If you want to talk about exploitation he'll be the king of it. I feel so bad for Dannielynn. With her mothers death Larry is making money because of Anna Nicole Smith. He has a reality show in the works and a children's clothing line just because of his relationship and who his daughters mother is. Dannielynn is famous for being born and the tragic life of her mother. What's the difference between Larry and the Gosselin's? because I would like to know.

I thought of one positive thing to say about the Duggars! They are gorgeous children. Truly beautiful boys/girls. I do wonder what will happen when certain members of the family break away from the sect that they belong to, will they welcome them still? I think they totally patronize Amy, so I wonder if they would do the same to a gone astray sibling/child.

Quiltart- thanks for bringing up the Roloffs and their extensive remodeling. That family lived in 3 rooms while the rest of the house (windowless house at that) was worked on for months and months and months. Can you imagine the reaction of the G's did that? Child abuse, child abuse!! I like Amy, but she has no clue how to discipline her kids, maybe if they had had a time out mat they wouldnt be such lazy, disrespectful kids. She even made excuses for when they destroyed the yard after Matt told them that they were not allowed to drive on it. Jeremy crashed into the new garage as soon as it was done and she just shrugged it off. Yes is was an accident but she didnt have to get pissed at Matt for being annoyed. Im not defending Matt so much either, Id have shot myself after being married to him for two days.

Regarding the Duggars...I've only caught a few episodes, but here's my take...

Although they basically appear to be a happy family, I don't agree with their faith -- find aspects of it actually disturbing (purposely enforcing only Creationism and ignoring the wealth of knowledge and evidence science has to offer on this subject) -- and can't stomach all that "niceness".

If I wanted to watch a 50s sitcom, I'd tune to TV Land...and if this is their "real," well, it just is too sugary-fakeish for my personal taste.

All the kids are just miniatures of their parents, as far as I can see....and that appears to be what the parents want.

So, guess what? I don't watch the show! AND...this will be the only comment I probably ever make on this family and I have no interest in looking for blogs or other information on the internet about them.

See how easy that was???

"The Olsen twins, who started working as infants, are another example of kids who've been in the business prior to their ability to consent to their own involvement."

I think the fundamental difference between the Olsens and the Gosselins is that the Olsens were child actors and therefore protected by the laws in place for child actors. There are no laws in place for kids on reality shows. I do think the twins were exploited by their parents, since they started in the business when they were babies. But when they were old enough to speak for themselves and make a choice, did their parents give them the option of quitting the business? Maybe because they had never known anything but showbiz, they couldn't imagine opting out. But I suspect if they'd truly hated what they were doing, when they were old enough to make that decision, they could have chosen to walk away. I think they appear as poised young women now, but they've also had a lifetime of creating a persona for the cameras, so who knows what they're like away from the public scrutiny.

"What's the difference between Larry [Birkhead] and the Gosselin's? because I would like to know."

Larry didn't have to "sell" Danielynn to the media; the media attention was already focused on Anna and therefore her daughter as well. He could have chosen to live quietly with Dani and her trust fund, and the royalties he earned from selling their story (in the millions) and the copyright income from his years as a photographer, and the media attention would have moved on to the next big thing, with only an occasional interest in "where are they now." I think Larry had become used to all the media attention during the frenzy surrounding Anna, and now Dani provides a way to keep him in the spotlight. Without Dani, the media would have forgotten Birkhead by now.

Jersey Girl,

I wonder about that myself....but I think they will still accept the kids if they stray some. I do think Amy is kindof a pain in the butt and I really don't see the point of her being on the show...but I do sense that they love her and accept her.

I sure hope Larry.B. doesn't use that little girl in that way, to make a buck, that would be horrible. After all he had to go through to get her back and then do something like that, it would be exploitation at its worse. It would kind of make me believe he wanted her for all of the wrong reasons.

LOVE the Hamb. Helper avatar!

I just was looking at the Gosselins personal website and the devotional, which hasn't been updated in a few weeks. It struck me that maybe it is one way to show someone the Golden Rule. Purposefully not updating something they said they would, with a "treat others as you would yourself" theme. Not necessarily passive aggressive, but ironic a bit??

Here is Kate's last devotional:
Matt 7:12 Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Such simple words that hold such heavy meaning. I try to teach my children this daily... Whenever they squabble over a toy (which I might add, is VERY often!) This verse is referred to as the Golden rule. Recently, I was reading a Berenstein Bears book about this verse to
Hannah. In the book, Sister bear excluded a new girl from her play group at school. She felt very guilty about it and remembered a time when she was excluded and how she felt. Her mommy taught her about the golden rule and she went to school the next day and treated the new
girl how she would have wanted to be treated! She invited her to join her play group!
What a great book about this verse! When we are tempted to treat others less than well, we need to remember that God loves us and created each of us equally no matter our abilities, appearance or talents! I admit, sometimes that is a very hard thing to do!!!!! Lord, please help us to treat others the way we want to be treated remembering that you love us and created us equally!!!!! Amen.

IMHO, I think one of the reasons so many people strongly dislike the Gosselins is because Kate reminds them of themselves. Sometimes it can be hard to identify with Michelle Duggar or the moms on Toddlers and Tiaras but Kate started out as a pretty normal mom (maybe not so much anymore) except for the fact that she had eight kids and that was why we liked her. However, she shows us the good and the bad which can be uncomfortable at times.

The way she talks to John? I, and my friends, have done it with my own husbands. The way she bosses and tries to control her kids? I, and my friends, have done it with our own. I'm not proud of it, but recognizing that behavior is the first step to improvement. It's hard for me to say this, but not all women are sweet and obliging all the time. (once again, Michelle Duggar comes to mind)

Kate really holds a mirror up to our personal ideas of what a mom should be and when we don't like what the mirror reflects, we get upset and take it out on her and her family.

Instead of bashing the Gosselins, we could use this opprotunity (other moms such as Michelle Obama come to mind) to have a conversation on what it means to be a mom, a working mom, a stay at home mom, etc. It's not an easy job!

JerseyGirl said...

I have had the same thought... and I definitely think at least one of them will rebel in some way... if not sooner, then later!

In one episode one of the kids commented how they all loved to go to the grocery store because it was the only time they got to leave the house... All of them together 24/7 has got to be stifling at some point... at least it would be to me.
IMHO, the girls will rebel more than the boys...

scarfoot79 said...

I don't have a really strong opinion of the Duggars either way, but the wedding was really odd to me. I could see that parts of it were staged (the Lego talk), but the two parts of that episode that bothered me the most were the parts about Jim Bob and Michelle having a hard time without the girls to help them, and the wine issue.

I have always been very bothered by the fact that the older children in that family dress, feed, and home school the younger children. Just to clarify - I have no problem with siblings helping siblings, and think that is an important part of being a family. But I really feel like the Duggars "allow" the older siblings to parent the younger ones too much. If you have 18 kids, and you aren't even helping them dress, or working one on one with them in a homeschool setting, when do you get to spend time with that child?! As far as what will happen when the older girls move on, I'll be curious to see if they actually do or not. My gut feeling is that the children say they have choices (such as courtship) but really are still very heavily influenced in what they should be doing. Again, I do believe that parents should be influencing their children, even older ones. But when it comes to making decisions about whether or not you should hold hands with your love interest and you are 20 years old, can you not make that decision alone? Do you really have to ask your parents if that is OK?

Also, when Anna's father went on about how the Bible talks about Jesus' first miracle at a wedding (changing water to wine) and then he went on and on about it being grape juice, not wine, I was a little bothered. First of all, does he just get to pick and choose what to believe in the Bible? I guess he can, that is his choice. I'm just surprised to see such a conservative man claim that part of the Bible isn't true. Second of all, the translation of that word in the Bible is actually wine, not any form of plain fruit juice. And thirdly, did he think that they had refrigerators to keep grape juice around back then!? HAHA. My point is, I would imagine that alcoholic beverages stored better and were fairly common in Biblical time.

I know. What silly stuff to write a comment about!! Don't think less of me! ;)

Finally, whoever asked about LOST - it is really good!

Amy, excellent post. I agree with all your points. We have touched on this somewhat in the past, but obviously what you are referring to requires thoughtful contemplation and an acknowledgement that we all have parts of our personality we do not like.

Anyhoo, gotta go, we are in the process of downsizing (moving in with some people we met at the soup kitchen). We won't be taking any packing tips from J&K, however. We are going to throw everything on a plastic painter's tarp and drag it outta here. Moving boxes are for special people, I guess!

=======

As for Amy's comment, I am shocked to think that people talk to their spouses like Jon and Kate do. I have never spoken to my husband like Kate speaks to Jon, nor has he spoken to me the way he has to Kate.

I am certainly not saying that we are a perfect couple, but we do speak respectfully, even when we argue.

As far as Kate being a reflection of my own self-I see that we are both women, mothers....but I don't see myself in her whatsoever.

In fact, that comment could be taken as an insult, if I chose to let it....but I don't Amy, so please don't think I am underminding your comment or your thoughts....it just isn't something that I agree with. Maybe other women on this board do have a relationship similar to Jon and Kate and if that is what works for them, well, ok....

Well, I think Michelle Diggar is sweet. I like the little I've seen of her.

I want to tell her about breastfeeding and a more natural spacing to those kids, but I don't want to make it seem like they shouldn't have had some of them. My own mother had a bunch close together, so I know it's not necessarily negative. Still, she deserves a year off every now and then.

I saw a small part of the wedding. The bride was beautiful. I wasn't impressed with the groom. He didn't look like a man to me, more like a boy pretending to be a man. He shouldn't sing in public.

Jesus turned water into wine. Let's get that straight. I love Jesus but I drink a little.

Yesterday I watched the rerun when the twins celebrate their 6th birthday at American Girl (lucky!) Jon made a crack at Kate after Kate was being bossy. In the couch interview, they both said they didn't like that it was caught on tape. They seemed really sincere and embarrassed about it. I would have felt the same way. It wasn't a horrible exchange either.

My husband never talks disrespectfully to me, but I am not quite the saint he is. I can be snippy and bossy. Like Kate though, I have improved. I agree, Amy, that some of the things I don't like in Kate are things I don't like in me.

We do see them apologize and admit their faults. I know that's not enough for some viewers, but everyone is a work in progress, including the Gosselins.

This is why I appreciate that Kate calls Jon on it when he is jerky to her. I think it's good to let the people around you know how you expect to be treated. If Jon called Kate on her behavior more (although, honestly, I'm not sure it bothers him that much), I think she mind think twice before she gets bitchy.

I'm not trying to blame the victim - but I firmly believe that this is a dynamic between them, and that they both get something out of it. I can only guess that he likes being the 9th kid or the henpecked husband.

I also kind of suspect that at this point the producers make sure to catch all of these moments of Kate sniping at Jon. So what we see may not be a proportionate representation of how much she does it.

Period.

Geez, if I could only count the number of times I've argued your point....

I've always thought that the extreme Kate-hatred had less to do with her kids being on tv and the supposed "exploitation" and more to do with the fact that she's bitchy and a little snotty but is still getting everything she wants. She looks great, has a nice new house, lots and lots of fans, and a beautiful family. If she was sweet as sugar all the time(even if it was fake), or humble and ugly, there'd be a lot less snark.

Anonymous said...

I certainly wished Jon would have spoken up about not being allowed to shop anymore, being yelled at to only use a coupon, and remembering the rule about receipts...

It is hard for me to imagine that Jon is ok with being treated the way he is, however if he tolerates it then it is his own fault.

Kate's threat to shoot him when Alexis was in earshot was inappropriate and degrading. I can't imagine what a 4 year old must think when a Mother says such things.

As far as fair representation of what we see, I do believe that Kate represents her self pretty honestly and I firmly believe that she behaves like that most of the time.

Her behavior seems to come easily and naturally to her. It isn't as though she catches herself...

Hi Fiona. No offense taken. I consider our site a sanctuary from the hate and craziness. Thank goodness.

I understand your issues with the show and Kate. I respect your right to your opinion (as well as others who share your view). The majority of people posting here with dissenting views are respectful and do not approach the ire seen elsewhere.

When I think of some of the most zealous and cruelest comments, I am not even necessarily thinking of GWoP, etc. They are players in this, of course, but the Topix boards are the worst. I also think about how Entertainment Weekly published a mildly rebuking article and the haters were on it like white on rice. (Or ants to a picnic to quote Baby Mama). A lot of what is said on these unmoderated boards are lies and distortions. Because they have "the truth" on their side, one of the favorite tactics of the haters is to take the handle of some of us who have spoken in support of the Gosselins. Someone pointed out to me yesterday that I was quoted on the LA Times comment section as saying I lived in a commune! NoMoreDrama was also similarly slimed. These are *not* people capable of a rational discussion obviously.

My point is I wish we didn't have to spend so much time talking about the craziness. Yeah, sometimes it is fun to poke at (see my Hamburger Helper post above), but I actually would like the opportunity to engage in civil and adult conversation and debate about the show and the surrounding issues more often.

While child actors are protected by laws, most of their parents are their managers. The kids pay them (their parents) for their managing. In that sense, they are also completely dependent on their children for their income.

Since you appear to be new to the Gosselin blogging world you may not be aware that the "many people" you may have observed on other sites may not be as large a number as it appears.

There is rampant sockpuppeting on many sites...one or more posters posting comments under as many names as they can think of to make it appear that there are more people agreeing (or writing emails/letters) than there actually are.

I think even if the P&G spokesman exaggerated the *smallness* of the number of complaints they got about Kate, it's not nearly as many people as some sites would like the casual reader to believe.

Yes, the parents of child actors typically serve as their managers as well. But my reference to the laws protecting child actors was not to imply they protected child actors from their parents. The importance of these laws, which do not apply to kids on reality series, is that they address working conditions, work hours, trust accounts, penalties for violating the law, etc. As happened with Macaulay Culkin, whose father was also his manager, child labor laws can't protect a child from a dysfunctional family, which led to Macaulay's successful suit to become emancipated when he was 15.

Random thoughts:

Unless OJ Simpson or Michael Vick become P&G spokespeople, I will still buy my Febreze & my Gain.

I have never seen LPBW.

I have tried to watch the Duggars, but I was bored within minutes. They seem like a nice enough family, but they don't hold my interest.

As far as "loving or hating" Kate, for me, it really depends on the episode. Sometimes I get her, and think she's hysterical. Sometimes she sets my teeth on edge & I get annoyed by her. When I watch the reruns (which, admittedly isn't all that often), I simply avoid the shows that she bugs me.

I guess I am of the opinion that GWOP probably started out with good intentions. I can see the child advocacy thing. BUT there is way too much bashing, gossip, nitpicking, what have you there. I mean, someone posted that Jon was out partying when Kate wasn't around (sorry, not buying THAT one), and suddenly there are people posting it like it's fact. So, if I post that I'm having a torrid affair with Christopher Meloni, does that make it true?

Final note: I am now craving Hamburger Helper. We splurged tonight & ordered off the dollar menu at McDonald's.

OMG I forgot to mention this earlier- Kuromi, your comment about Jon on Joel's wedding day made me laugh out loud in the middle of my Finance class. Just genius!!

Marci, AWW!! A friendship bracelet?? Wow... I'm so excited we can share Hamburger Helper together... and Hello Kitty is wonderful. Pink is the bestest!!

(In all honesty, I do love pink. Ask SamanthaNC-- I linked her to the new laptop bag I bought on Amazon. Its pink polka dots. As I told her, "My laptop bag does not demand respect... but it does make me smile.")

(And as another note, I honestly did grow up in a family where we ate lots of Hamburger helper and fish sticks, etc. Its just how life was. So joking around about it is hilarious to me, because I remember those days and still laugh about them with my family. Life goes on-- we're no worse for the wear!)

I can bring the Kool Aid but none of that fancy sugar, we can add it to the t-shirt water for color and taste (Martha Stewart, eat your heart out)

I draw the line at SPAM. When I think of those cute baby spams...

Lizabeth, I loved fish sticks for lunch when I was a kid, all that yummy breading.

merryway said...

Oh dear, I just read my post. I forgot as to how “Kool Aid” is usually referred and now it looks kind of Jim Joneish. Not my intent at all. Elizabeth's post made me think of running to the pony keg to get a 10c packet of Kool Aid as a kid.

How about Tang?

Agreed. In our household growing up it was tuna casserole. Quick and cheap.

Merryway, "Jim Joneish". LOL. I thought the Kool Aid reference was intentional. Isn't that what us sheeple like to drink? :-)

Kate-Hater
Tang? We aren't millionaires here like Katie Irene, thank you very much. (Although I *do* like that it isn't organic).

I'll just sit here in the corner and drink my t-shirt water.

Tell you what. I'll take him on the days that end in a Y, and you can have him the other days :)

But you know, I bet that EVIL KATE already has her eye on him! No fair...she ALWAYS gets the goods!

merryway said...

Anya, lol, I guess it works, but I never use the Kool Aid reference. I don't care for it.

I swear it's okay to use the Tang, I'm not above my raisin or livin high on the hog. I've had it since 1972 and only bring it out for special occasions. We had a coupon and it was double coupon day! Oh what special memories that day has. Sometimes you just have to be good to yourself.

Hubby knows I read the blogs & post here & there, but he doesn't really care. Heh, I'm a poet. He's not a fan of the show (thinks the kids scream & whine too much) so he probably thinks I'm weird, but is too polite to say so.

I can see the Daniel Craig love.

Anonymous said...

Bella,

Don't all men think kids (especially not their own!) scream and whine too much? Before Miss Ellie came along, he was not a fan of children. Now, he is smitten. Miss Ellie is brilliant, extremely funny and shares his love of dogs and animals in general.

But other people's cildren? He has no tolerance! Will not be in the same room if the show is on.

I talk to my sister and mom about the show (but my sister simply can't watch as she disliked Kate from almost day one. Sis won't spend her time wasting one second on the Gosselins.. ), but mom likes it. She knows I read about the ins and outs of the blogs and always asks what is new. I think she likes the gossip.

Darlene Williams said...

Meaghan, my hubby thinks I need to get another hobby but he knows I blog and comment etc about the Gosselin's and from time to time he'll ask me what's the latest snark. I have told other friends and family I comment on some blog and they are like that's cool.

Regarding the poster who said that people see Kate in themselves...I couldn't agree with you more. I think people are hardest on the qualities in others that they themselves possess. It's easier to point so-called negative qualities out in other people than it is to see those qualities in yourself.

That being said, I don't cringe when I say that Kate reminds me a bit of myself as well as the other ladies in my family. My husband and I argue loudly sometimes and speak our minds and say things that others may perceive to be mean. But it's our relationship. My mom and dad had the same type, and they've been married for 50 years. I think everyone has a different relationship, and to say that one is better than the other is silly. I love when the haters say, "My husband and I would NEVER speak to each other that way..." as if to imply their relationship is better or more superior than people who tend to be more vocal in their relationships. Also, I have many times lightly and jokingly slapped my husband. Stress: lightly and jokingly. Like Kate does. Am I abusive? No. It's all in good fun.

To imply that Jon is being abused and should walk out on Kate -- why do people think Jon is such a big wimp who can't think for himself? As if Kate has mind control over him. He is an adult. Clearly, he doesn't want to leave Kate. Why can't people grasp the concept that he loves Kate and doesn't want to leave her? I love the "Their relationship is in turmoil" comments. As if we have any idea.

The kool aid party comments are phenomenal. Not too Jim Jonesish at all!! (To be totally honest again, we did grow up on kool aid :)! There are many pics of my brothers and I with kool aid moustaches which are now pretty mortifying to see...)

I suppose Tang works too. I thought this was going to be a *special* party so the kool aid would be brought out for the occasion. Sigh. Dirty tshirt water works for me, too. Same ol', same ol'.

New to this blog. It seems like a nice site. Don't know 'computer-speak' so forgive me at times.
Also, I noticed on some other sites when trying to 'converse' all of a sudden other people as posting as my name and saying such crazy things. Does it happen here too?
As far as Jon and Kate, I don't understand the debate at all. The rabid haters are fierce and the avid fans seem over the top too. It's kind of mind-boggling.
As far as Nadya Suleman, I don't know how I feel. I wish her well and maybe she'll get a TV deal and make out like Jon & Kate and her family won't have to worry so much about money.
And the only thing about Kate Gosselin is that she seems to not like the celebrity that she's created for herself (no personal contact myself, just people I know that encountered her) and I don't understand that.

Now in other quarters, the email letter writing campaign has begun again! (Even though oddly they admit they know P&G doesn't read their emails?!?)

Besides, Proctor and Gamble looks on these letter writing campaigns as POSITIVE. You know the saying about any publicity being good publicity? The GWoPPers will not be able to put a dent in the letter writing campaign and boycotting that fans of Another World staged when P&G pulled the plug on the 30 year old soap in 1998. Letters, e-mails, boycotts, picketing. I remember going through the list of items on the P&G roster and thinking "DAMN. Shampoo, conditioner, detergent, dog food, toothpaste, dish soap, I'm going to have to alter ALL my grocery shopping." It was too much of a hassle. P&G is enormous and has their hands in just about everything. to think they'll be worried about what a bunch of hate mongers at GWoP think, is laughable.

Bella Donna, you're just using the wrong symbols. Instead of using [] around the b and /b, use these < >. You have the right idea, though.

As far as P&G products, check out this list: http://www.pg.com/common/product_sitemap.shtml

Let's see, I am guilty of buying the following regularly:

Secret
Tide
Downy
Crest
Pantene
Head and Shoulders
Puffs
Duracell
Dawn
Bounty
Swiffer
Mr. Clean
Fabreeze
Olay
Gillette
Pringles

And being that they're not giving into the "advocates" and basically blew them off, I think I'll buy some more (and say that I'm sorry for the Another World boycott I tried to stick with 10 years ago that lasted about a week).

MCB, I buy cheeseburger mac, but that's the only kind I've ever liked. It's yummy. I don't do a lot of red meat and usually opt for fish, chicken or pasta. I don't know why I don't buy ground turkey Ha ha, my little one is growing up on my old lady diet. My fist two...oooh, I cringe when I think of the fast food I fed them before I knew better, prob when they 5/6.

I've been boycotting P&G for years as well as Nestle and Coke. It's a whole different subject, but mostly for their third world policies. P&G laughed in the face of PETA, they could care less about a few crazy obsessed haters, that's not their base market. My friends and I aren't delusion, we know these companies are not affected in anyway by our small lack of purchases, we just don't like to contribute. Actually, the only kind of peanut butter I will buy is Jif, they got me there. It was rated top for years by Consumer Reports (I haven't checked for a long time).

Lizabeth, yep. Grape Kool Aid tongue. It was so good. It was best when I was allowed to buy these little 10c frozen pizzas for lunch at the same ponykeg where I got the Kool Aid.

Nina, I use A&H. But, I want to try to the Duggar detergent. I would like to see that savings in my pocket if it really does clean. Their clothes have looked nice when I've watched.

Belladonna, your post is cute with the [ ]. It wasn't until Nina put a link up on “how to” that I started bolding.

I like Jim Halpert, but not like that. He reminds me of my oldest, so I want to give him just a small whack on his head (for fun) when he does something smartass. I do think Meloni is kind of hot and I used to watch that show until this season (is there ever a new one?). I've always had a crush on Val Kilmer. ...Willow, Tombstone (my fav), he was hilarious in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Pringles are nasty.

Anya, you make me laugh so hard, I love your sense of humor.

I know I couldn't! I have four kids, including 3 boys who get really dirty. Tide is magical! Ive never found a detergent that can come remotely close in getting out stains.

I wonder if P&G makes store brands. Id hate for those boycotters to buy store brand products for their families (and goats) only to have the money end up back with P&G. My sister is a scientist with a pretty big food corporation and I know which of their products I can buy under a store label. Same exact stuff, different packaging, money saved.

Nina and JerseyGirl,

I need your Tide help! I always bought Cheer because it's slightly cheaper than Tide, washes well, and smells great. I'm kind of a laundry detergent snob, and can't handle going to the cheap ones. Now I'm having a hard time finding Cheer, and it's giving me a really bad case of the dingies (from the commercial)! Not really, I'm just kind of blue.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and buy Tide, and I'm not excited about it. I smelled all the different scents the other day and didn't like them, but it's hard to tell what it smells like really on clothes. So which one do you buy?

Yes, yes, I know, I'm writing about laundry detergent. Some blogs are going to make fun of me for this, I'm just sure. But I don't care, it's open discussion and I can ask about detergent if I want! ;)

Try Tide Total care. It's in the orange bottle. Get the rainforest scent. My husband likes this one the best of all detergents because he likes a neutral smell and not the pretty smells of most detergents. Believe me, we've done a lot of testing of detergents. :)

I also never buy deteregent without the coupons. Too expensive.

Tide with Febreeze is my guilty pleasure!!! I get my detergent from Sam's, and until recently there wasn't much of a difference in the price per load. Now I'm using ALL... it was $8 less and has more loads. I do still miss my Tide with Frebreeze, but I have to say the ALL works just as well.

The best toothpaste I ever used was Crest ProHealth - I am no longer buying that brand but I still purchase other P&G products. Honestly, it's hard to straight out boycott a company like P&G because of all its different brands... one brand/product might not go over well with the public but that doesn't mean the company is the worse for wear.

I find it funny that many are boycotting KMart, just to end up at Wal-Mart... they are P&G's biggest account and have been bending over backwards for Wal-Mart for years. P&G does manufacture store brands for various markets and stores.

I do not know if this has been brought up before, but I just do not understand all the people at the "other" site. I read their "redesigning" article, and comments that followed; many people thanked the writer for the "well-researched, factual" piece. Nothing was cited, and these people just believe that everything is true! Just because a certain explaination can make sense, it does not mean it is true. They said that the producers wanted have kate "cleaning a refrigerator for an entire episode when we know TLC has paid for a professional executive cleaning."

I want to know what inside knowledge they have. Smells to me like people jumping to conclusions, and seeing what they want to see.

"Really? I thought I'd heard that they allowed the birth of their latest daughter to be filmed. Maybe I misunderstood."

Babies births are filmed all the time--it is not exploitation first off as it is a process mom is going through that she chooses to share.

It is HER intimacy and not the baby's that is being shared, so you cannot call it exploitation of a child. It...just...isn't.

That being said--a couple of things on Michelle.

She would not allow her exposed belly to be taped for her ultrasounds. They created a drape. The camera was present, but you did not see her belly. Oddly, I could have sworn up and down that with the last baby, she didn't do this--but perhaps this was a later added decision in which she changed her mind after realizing she was showing skin on television. I don't know.

Both births were recorded--from what I call a sanitized angle. This was how my births were taped. IOW. There was no crotch shots.

And I'm not even sure it was a camera crew. I think the last baby was taped by one of the girls at the actual time and not the camera crew, but I do not remember.

This most recent birth was a c-section...which of course was from a completely sanitized angle as you saw them lift the baby up above the drape to be seen.

To equate child birth with exploitation of children is laughable.

But to clarify--we didn't physically witness the birth.

Anonymous said...

"The baby didn't give consent. Perhaps she wouldn't want something as private as her birth filmed.

I still see an inconsistency in your POV re consent. I asked a while back if it was okay to take any pictures of your children before they can give informed consent, but IIRC you never responded.
"

Well--Roe V Wade protects Michelle's right to share this experience without needing her newborns permission.

And that is all I will say on that.

Do you have issues with any portrayal of any intimate event on television, or just in reality series?

Guinevere said...

I don't have issues with either - more just with the different rules people have for different TV families. I think it's the kid's birth, and as such it's their "intimate" moment. So if you have an issue with Gosselin children being filmed, you should have an issue with a child's birth being filmed.

Plus, if you film a birth, often the newborn is shown naked! in the footage. Which apparently is just catnip to pedophiles.

I don't know; these aren't my rules. I'm just applying what I've heard other people say about the Gosselin kids.

Claire S said...

Does anyone know anything about the Gosselin's health insurance? Do you think they get it through TLC or carry it on their own(way expensive for 10 people!)? I just hope they have it and pay for it in some way like regular families.

I've recently read that the Hayes family will have a new show coming on called "Twelve at the Table."

There is also a new show coming out on either WE or Bravo featuring the Masche sextuplets.

I read on another blog that someone who was at Jon's event at Penn State last night, reported back that the Gosselins have just reupped for their fifth season -- that info coming directly from Jon!

It will be intesting to see if the other families fall under the same scrutiny that the Gosselins have....

They probably will be some because some people have concerns about having kids on TV and some are appalled at large families.

But I think it's Kate personality that drives a lot of the harsh criticism. So unless they have another Kate, they won't get anywhere near the hostility that is aimed at the Gosselins.

I have been in a battle with myself over the Duggar family. They have a right to their religious beliefs even though I find their brand of Christianity on the zealous side. But maybe I am no good and going to hell or something. I don't generally watch the show but when I can't sleep (and that's very often LOL!) I turn on the TV and channel surf. There they are! I have seen a few as well as the new baby birth and the wedding.

I'm sure one of the reasons I have this awful feeling in the pit of my stomach about what I'm seeing is that one of our relatives went on to have 9 children. Sure her husband was a lawyer but he never made enough to raise all of those kids so they were always behind on their mortgage etc. And then there was his wife. She smiles exactly like Michelle Duggar. All the time. Even when she is facing her mother and asking for money to help with the late mortgage payment. When she talks about her husband she has that same smile as if he is some kind of god and she adores him. She is still smiling when he yells out to her "-------get me my drink". We all are/have been embarrassed by this during family gatherings. Then there are the kids. Devout Christians of a common denomination but brain washed a lot like the Duggar kids. So much so that when one of them couldn't get pregnant she had to go to a psychiatrist because she was not "doing her wifely duty providing them with as many children as God sends". While these kids were growing up I watched the older ones take care of the younger ones. There was a gap between the first 3 kids and the other 6 so they had the perfect set up. 3 older kids who kept taking on the tasks of mom and dad re a new baby/toddler. It made us all sick. This is an in-law situation so I had to keep my mouth shut. I can't tell you what a mess these grown up kids are now. Not drugs. Not mean people. But a few have some very sad issues that have kept them from having a loving relationship with someone and a family of their own. Some are following in mom's footsteps and churning out children before the husbands are even done with grad school. And their mother still has that same strange smile on her face and speaks in the same way as Michelle Duggar even though she is watching as her grown up children go through all sorts of issues.

There is no room for discussion or debate. The kids do/think/believe exactly what the parents do. They give up their childhoods to be little parents themselves. This upsets me. While I feel we have been guides for our own children, we certainly don't expect them to think exactly as we do. Krap! That would be awful! I am proud that they have improved on me LOL! They are very much their own people and think things through and come to their own conclusions. If anything, we have taught them to be logical and practical and set a course for themselves. But to dictate exactly what that course will be and include is a no go for me.

The Duggars can do as they please, but I disagree with much of their lifestyle. I don't hate them or make fun of them but I truly believe it is an unhealthy environment for those kids. And yes, they are exploiting them too if you are one of the people who believes the Gosselins exploit their kids. There is no difference. They have a book out, they have traveled on their production company's dime, they invite us into their very private moments and the cutting room floor helps to manipulate what is shown. I think they love their kids but I just can't get past this creepy feeling of robot like children who are rarely allowed to interact outside of their own family or circle of like minded people.

Scarfoot-I switched to Tide when we had to replace our washer/dryer (damn, why didn't I contact Kate to see if she could get me a deal!) and I too was smelling all the different detergents and saying no, no, no. I finally ended up with Tide because I needed the he type and Costco carried it in a huge bottle at a much better price. I haven't noticed a super flowery smell on our stuff, but the front loading machines don't use as much soap and I spin the heck out of them so that they are not so wet when they go into the dryer.

Also, for the poster who mentioned the no scent items, ITA. I used All and Downy without scent for my husband's clothes when he suddenly began having some allergic reactions. We had no idea why so I tried everything to see if I could help determine what it might be. There is no real scent but the clothes and towels simply smell freshly laundered.

I know. A completely uninteresting comment about drab things but we do all have to deal with them anyway so why not share LOL?

Since the next target of outrage is Dr. Phil, I think it would be sooo funny if he referred to the "Crazy Haters who think you have a conspiracy going, etc. etc."
That would make me smile.

I have only seen his show about 4 or 5 times. But, I will be watching or at least taping on Thursday. I want to see Kate.

St., I like your new topic.

I just saw this and it made me cry. It's been so long that I've seen any youth in America excited in this way. It was a beautiful thing. Thought you guys might like it.
