"Kate's Birthday Surprise"; "Sun, Seashells, and Scrapes"

Two episodes tonight.

"Kate's Birthday Surprise": The kids have a special surprise in store for Kate's birthday and they're soliciting the help of professional baker Duff Goldman.

"Sun, Seashells and Scrapes": While Kate and Mady share some relaxing mother-daughter time in San Diego, Jon hangs with the other seven children back at home.

You and me both. Chocolate sounds devine.

Anyone having a birthday?

Rachel107 said...

No but it's my wedding anniversary today. And my husband works til 9pm...oh well. Maybe I'll pick up a cake on the way home from work today.

Anya said...

Rachel, congratulations! How many years?

Any excuse for cake IMO.

Rachel107 said...

7 years today....and no "itch!"

Anyone here live in the South? Publix grocery stores have a cake called the Chocoloate Ganache Supreme that looks unbelievable. That's the one I want tonight.

Theresa said...

Congratulations Rachel!

That Chocolate Ganache Supreme sounds delicious. If you get some of that, have a piece for me.

Rachel107...let's just chalk it up to 2 parties misunderstanding each other. Happy anniversary ;0)

I used to live in Florida and was in love with the icebox cheesecake at PUblix. It was chocolate cake with a thick layer of cheesecake and chocolate frosting on top. Do they still sell that one?

A Mom-ynous said...

I'm sure they do mariel.

I am partial to their carrot cake and their cannoli's myself.

They do have the ganache I believe--but unless it is time for my visitor, it is simply too much chocolate.

Of course anything in their deluxe case looks HEAVENLY!

So as I'm waiting for the new episodes and cleaning the kitchen I'm listening to the replay of last week's episode. This is probably petty, but I'm really having trouble listening to Jon's little digs and attempts to be cute. Kate was always over-the-top and annoying in many ways. Sometimes downright mean. But what used to seem cute from Jon is now making me roll my eyes.

Instead of just answering the question about "What is the situation was reversed and you were out traveling and Kate was at home...?" he just threw some digs at Kate about how some people think he can't talk or breath right.

In talking about the party he throws in the littls "She forgot the cake. She forgot the phone." etc. Wah, wah, wah. Dude...she organized the party. While you were "away." So you had to pick up a couple of things. Get over it.

And finally that ridiculous little "Superman" flying thing at the camera when Kate asked him to check on the water in the bouncy castle. You have to walk a few yards to check out the bouncy castle. Big deal. Sorry pal, you're no Superman. Superman doesn't hang out in bars with college girls while his eight kids are asleep - and Superman doesn't lounge around on the lawn of his family's home with a girl in a bikini who is not his wife while his kids are who-knows-where - and Superman doesn't cheat on his wife.

I might have found these things cute in the past. But my view of him is entirely changed. Even he didn't sleep with another woman, he's shown such poor judgement and immaturity and reckless disrespect for the impact his behavior has on his family and his kids' future security, that it will be hard to ever look at him the same way.

Sad.

Liveandletlive,

Actually, I've always found J to be quite immature and passive-aggressive.

But you are right. He was over-the-top at the tups birthday party.

I liked this episode, it was low key and it was nice to see Mady smiling on the couch. I loved that Mady seemed so relaxed and happy with Kate at the spa and playing in the sand. I wish they had shown a little bit more of that. Overall pretty good.

On a wholly unrelated note, I don't know how, but the Pig Blog, those you know whats have picked up my name again so I'm seriously considering getting out of the blogging business and deactivating. I can't imagine people who have so little to do and so much hate that they have to run around the internet and find stuff they can mock and feel superior about. They really are pigs over there.

Didn't the show used to be about a family of 10 living their real lives (as real as they can be on reality tv)? Not even addressing the personal issues between Jon and Kate the show is now about luxury trips (these people go on more vacations in one year then I have been on in ten years), mansions, celebrity chefs, book tours and professional bakers staged into their lives . I liked the show so much more when the family had a budget and dealt with day to day family issues. The show is staged at this point it is silly. I have not watched this season, used to love the show but if I want to see something so staged I will go to the theater.

Erin, I agree with Anya. Please don't stop blogging because of a very miniscule group of people who are just jealous and disgruntled. I haven't been to the sty in quite a while, but I'm sure they've picked me apart time and time again. A few disgruntled people, who used to post here and proved they couldn't play well with others, hate me. Who cares. I won't give them the satisfaction of a reply. I'm not wasting my time on them.

Your thoughts are indeed appreciated here. Please keep blogging.

Thanks Anya, I'll shoot off an email in the morning. I feel like such a non-controversial person. The worst thing I ever did was take too much of an anti-anxiety drug, which anyone with experience will tell you is nothing much. But I haven't done it in over a year. I probably won't leave but I'll let them settle down a little about me. Maybe that will help

I love how she acted like she didn't know what was going on in the first show. She was wearing a pink top and pink shoes. Then what do you know... the cake is pink. She matched.

You can definitely tell that tonight's episodes were taped in March, before the sheep really hit the fan (thanks, Aaden), and last week's episode was taped in May. Yes, they weren't really "together" on either of tonight's shows, except for couch time, but at least they were speaking.

This week's shows were cute. And it's nice to see that Kate has at least loosened up since Cupcakegate, because those cakes were way messier than the cupcakes were (and they got to eat some! In fact, they were sugared up to the max!)

Oh, by the way, have the "advocates" began calling CPS because the kids were on the all-terrain vehicles without helmets? Oh, wait. My bad. Jon was the one supervising that activity. He gets a semi-pass. If Kate were there, they'd be calling CPS, because, after all, the real actual motive of the "advocates" is sticking it to Kate.

Mady seemed very talkative, happy and pleased to be the center of attention. She deserved a trip of her own, as Cara had gotten one with Jon. She was like a different kid,sitting there on the couch. And I think her braces are cute!

Overall, a cute episode, and if last week's show and the tabloids hadn't happened, you probably wouldn't have suspected anything was wrong.

Oh, and for all the flack the Gosselins get for cashing in on freebies, it's nice that the old swingset was put up for the kids. God knows they probably could have gotten a larger, swankier one by now, but Dr. Gosselin bought it, so it remains.

Oh, and I will be watching next week, if for nothing else but to see Alexis say "BAM!" when Emeril comes over.

LiveAndLetLive - I have to disagree with you about the birthday episode. Jon was acting as a puppet and not "superman." He is finally recognizing that he should not take such verbal abuse from Kate.

Also, I was terribly offended and annoyed at Kate during that episode because all she did was whine about how she did this "all alone!" Sorry, Kate, there are single mothers/military families, etc who do things "alone" all the time.

I'm cheering for Jon because he deserves something better than the treatment Kate gives him and he's realizing that.

Nothing wrong with anti-anxiety meds. Some people probably need something a little stronger. Maybe elephant tranquilizers.

Alexis was beyond adorable in the second episode. And that was taking into consideration her usual level of adorableness, which is ridiculous. Mady was super-cute in the interview chair, too. I love seeing Mady happy and I love how much personality she has and how articulate she is.

A Mom-ynous said...

I loved both episodes.

Perhaps I am heartless as I feel no remorse or sadness knowing that things fell apart.

One thing that stood out was the obvious recording schedule of both shows.

Clearly one day for each portion (Kate and Kids--one afternoon/evening, Jon Skiing one day--loved when he assisted with the ability group, Kate and Mady in San Diego (with a clearly "happy" child and not uncomfortable at all talking about her trip), and Jon and the kids at home.)

One thing that resonated with me was the "fairness issues". I could not help but laugh over the unfairness of Alexis's treat and the other kids politicking for their fair share. Happens in my home quite a bit.

As for the color "pink". Kate has been wearing pink a lot lately. She even wore it in San Diego. I wouldn't put too much credence that Kate "knew". Her phone is even pink.

The ATV's were nothing more than a powerwheels vehicle. I don't recall anyone reporting that company to CPS b/c of their commercials. I am unsure of what the beef would be for that. If Barbie was stamped on the side, folks would instead complain about the donation.

Just as there are fathers that have to get off their tushies and help at their kids' birthday parties without whining -which is essentially what Jon was doing by acting so offended that he might have to help Kate when asked. Don't worry, poor Jon probably survived having to help out. This is 2009 afterall and those are his kids too.

I'm cheering for Jon because he deserves something better than the treatment Kate gives him and he's realizing that.Yes, because all men with eight children under 8 should be out in bar with women who are not his wife and inviting those bikini clad sunbathers over to lay out in the yard when she's not around, or buy a bachelormobile to go bar hoppin with younger frat boys. Bravo Jon! You da MAN. You "found your balls" as the advocates like to say. Too bad you're rubbing them up against someone else.

One thing last night's shows did was debunk at least one tabloid rumor. I think it may be US Magazine (with their oh-so-tacky "Mommy to Monster" cover) that claims "Kate spas while child rushed to ER." Uhhh. Yeah. Alexis bit her lip. She got an ice pack and a smoothie. Hardly worth jumping on a plane to come winging home thousands of miles. News flash, US Magazine. Kids get hurt. WOW.

Didn't watch, but caught a quick recap on people.com. Sounds like the scenes with both Jon & Kate on the couch were very awkward. Kate's b-day was at the end of March, so this separation seems to have been going on for awhile. Sad. I think the divorce announcement is inevitable now.

Oh, and ladies, the cake was delish. Very rich, I couldn't even finish one piece!

I think its pretty pathetic of Jon to be away skiing on his wife's birthday. Whether he meant it or not.

The kids, as usual, were really cute. And I think Kate is really trying to not freak out so much.

CincyMom said...

I thought it was sweet Mady and Kate spent some time together.

I liked teh reuse of the playset. The crew must have mounted the camera from a window to get the "pickup" shot. I thought it was worth it.

While it would be beyond normal for my family to call a bus, travel for hours and go to a TV show bakery, I think their normal is much different at this point. It must have been funny for Kate to see people on a show she watches and have "worlds collide" (Seinfeld phrase).

My kids would love those powerwheels.

I thought it was sad Jon was gone for Kate's birthday. And that she didn't seem to have family or friends to spend it with.

Also, Erin, I too watch and get annoyed from what the premise used to be to the planned outings. So I understand your views. Guin, I continue to post here because I feel a sense of community and when I have watched something for so long, I may still want to comment even if parts of it annoy me. You asked Erin why she posts, not me, but I am answering for me because I feel the same, a bit, as she does.

I think it is pathetic he got a free trip to Park City for helping a kid ski for half a day!

This guy is trying really hard to get a snowboard sponsership and ride for a profession.

Steph51 said...

I think those were some pretty cute episodes. The kids seemed really happy and Alexis is just soo funny. Also I noticed they were talking a lot better...I worked as a nanny and I don't see those huge speech delays compared to other children that age.

Mady seemed really happy to spend time with her mom.

Honestly I don't care that TLC probably paid for those trips, I also don't care what it all costs. They have the opportunity to do it - great.

I also went over to the other blog and since my comments never get posted there:

I never watched that cake show and I don't care that one cake there costs $1000 - fact is it was free advertisment and no one probably paid a dime. I also didn't notice that Jon was driving a Mercedes when he took Alexis to the doctor and I never even knew what Gymboree was until the other blog pointed it out to me. So in a way they make sure that no one misses any of the product placement lol.

As far as I know, she has never posted here under that name (or at least she must have posted very rarely, or I'd probably recognize her). She posted only to air out a well-worn complaint about the direction the show has taken and express that she doesn't watch it.

It's totally different for someone who posts regularly or semi-regularly and actually has things to say about the show and/or the Gosselins. That, I understand. I don't understand jumping on as a newbie to complain about the direction of a show you don't even watch. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Geez, I feel BAD for Duff & The Gang at Ace of Cakes. According to "the other side"; they are all emailing the bakery and voicing their complaints, complete with cries of boycotting. They are so laid back & easy going, I hate to think of poor Mary Alice opening tons & tons of emails filled with vitriol b/c they had K+8 in the bakery. *shakes head*

I didn't watch the "Sun,Seashells & Scrapes" yet, but I did watch Kates Birthday episode & I enjoyed it. I thought it looked like they all had fun, the kids were adorable and while I am no fan of Kate, I thought she seemed very appreciative of the day.

Sorry but how many fathers of 8 get to go to Utah to "hang" with his friends. He complains that he can't be Jon, he has to be Jon & kate plus 8. Sorry Jon, but you would be working behind a desk in Harrisburg driving a mini-van and living a regular life if you didn't have the plus 8. It was nice that he helped out with the CP kid but there are kids like that right in his neighborhood. Try starting with Special Olympics, they have skiing, golfing, skating, all the things Jon likes.

Theresa said...

Mrs Ref, that's a fantastic idea for a business for Jon to do as a SAHD. It's local, he works from his house, and he "gets back" the reward of helping others. Or, as you suggest, a wonderful existing charity to work with is Special Olympics.

But, noooo. Jon wants to hang with his peeps on a mountain top. Earth to Jon! Your peeps are Mady, Cara, Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, Joel, and Kate.

You know, not to defend Jon, but as far as I'm concerned doing good is doing good, whether it's in Utah or Pennsylvania. So I'm not going to fault him for that.

I don't know how much of the ski trip was wanting to get away with his buddies (which wouldn't be a big deal to me if he hadn't already shown that he seems to be longing for his carefree bachelor days) and how much was avoiding Kate. I wonder if all of the episodes are going to be like this - Jon or Kate just happen to be away when the other is at home?

CincyMom said...

Jon helping others less fortunate would be an, dare I say it, "awesome," way to find something to help himself with an identity. But that really is an individual choice. No one can know what will make someone else happy.

But it COULD.
Jon really looks up to his late father, who helped those less fortunate, according to last night's show.

This could give him something else to focus on--my grandma said that whenever you feel bad or "down and out" to do something to help others. You inevitably feel better. Selfish somewhat maybe but also can help many.

Or going back to school, or finding a way to snowboard, whatever, if he can find a way to work his passion in and make a happy family I truly do wish the best for them.

(all the while hoping they have squirreled money away for the kids longterm so future decisions don't have to depend on things like unhappiness.......)

If Jon & Kate are separated, then why would she even want him at her bday? Why would he want to be there? Or if they had agreed to celebrate her bday together just the two of them some other day (like they did the big party for the kids on another day)? Jon deserves as much benefit of doubt that Kate gets when she is "away".

My hubby goes hunting every year on our wedding anniversary. Doesn't phase me. We've been married 16 years. If we decide to celebrate, we make our plans around what he or I have already scheduled.

I can't imagine they'd want to be anywhere near eachother right now, and I think it's good that they aren't trying to cover things up by spending every second together for the cameras if things are as uncomfortable between them as they appear. I think it's better for the kids and also for them because they may need that space to really figure out what to do next.

Okay, obviously my comment was misinterpreted.

I do not think that Jon is entitled to be out at bars, but he also doesn't deserve the treatment he gets from Kate. Kate doesn't realize that her constant nagging and horrific behavior has pushed her husband away. I think everyone is being too harsh on Jon. If what Jodi said is true, and Jon and Kate have a contract to see other people, how can Kate dare to exploit the situation. She caused it. To top it off, she's out doing interviews about the "affair" on her children's birthday! ridiculous.

I come from both a military and single family and my mother planned 3 birthday parties a year by herself. I couldn't help but be offended when Kate made comments about being alone. And we all know that Jon wasn't "away for the weekend," family members have made it clear that they are separated.

Am I being pulled to the anti-side, I don't know.

But Jon is overly talkative about his passion for snowboarding.

However--like any other celebrity that helps a person in need, I don't like to think of them in an "evil" way b/c I surely am not up off my butt doing something similar.

I tried posting on GWOP as many people questioned if he was helping or not as I do recall the lady specifically saying that he was there to kind of play defense and "take one for the team" (as in prevent an accident wtih the disabled speaker).

Many are skeptical, so I wonder if Jon skiing in the lookout position is a legitimate "help".

Oh good gosh--they are praising Matt Lauer as a good working father for exposing Kate's exploitation.

Surely they missed the part where Matt had affairs and is divorcing his wife of 6 years--surely due to his extensive unnecessary work travel (Where in the World is Matt Lauer and 2 Olympics for starters).

He may not have exploited his kids on air per their terms, but he is not the epitome of a perfect father and partner.

Valerie said...

What they can't grasp is that Matt Lauer is a talking head, just like every other news anchor and news magazine anchor who read the "news" that is on their teleprompter.

The only reason Matt said anything is because it was on that teleprompter and someone in their "news" organization felt it was worthy to keep the boring saga going.

I don't know about you all, but i'm tired of these shows having to say something just because another tabloid show said something. Someone on these posts said before to get a real story, I agree.

Well, I wouldn't go THAT far as once working in the industry. There is talent to interviewing and background to be studied EVEN if it is provided to him by assistants.

But it does amaze me when the "talking heads" speak the party line on the Gosselins, their pasts and presents are suddenly irrelevant or ignored.

They posted a benign comment of mine unrleated to ML, but my ML comments were not posted.

What I find interesting is that he is in agreement with a psychologist that during this tough time she should be home with the kids.

Yet his wife has filed for divorce--they say Where in the World was cancelled this year due to the extravagence not sitting well with viewers.

But that didn't stop him in past years.

And no--that is not urgent news to be traveling around the world covering fluff (even as interesting as it is).

But to quote Tom Cruise--"Matt, you're being glib."

Yea, it is necessary, but the postion that Jon was taking is a great gig, and in know way do I mean that disrespectfully. Skiing with a blind/deaf or disabled skier is rewarding, but it also gets you a free ski pass. This isn't big time giving back in anyway.

As far as him taking a hit, most skiers give these folks a wide gerth. It was show. It was Jon giving a reason for being at Spring Gruv!

I think Jon has gotten more than his fair share of heat here, however this was a PR stunt IMO.

Of course Matt Lauer can be a "good working father." He's got a stay at home wifey (who happens to be divorcing him) AND nannies to look after the three kids. You know, like Jon and Kate tried (to a lesser degree as Kate doesn't work outside the home everyday or travel as much as Lauer does) except with the roles reversed. Funny, how a working dad (with questionable behavior) is a "good father," while a woman that tries to be the bread winner is a horrible mother. Nice sexist hypocrisy, "advocates."

How nice. I just caught the last 15 minutes of "Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate, an E! News Special." Everyone is cashing in!

Willingly. Riiiight. I believe that about as much as I believe that the GWoPPERs are actually concerned with the welfare of the children, and not on a witch hunt against their mother.

I think Jon and Kate did celebrate her birthday at Mr. Chows on March 24th in LA a few days before her real birthday on the 28th. Wow, don't I feel like a stalker and why do I remember those details? Anyway, Alexis is cute, Duff and the gang were great and apparently I missed Mr. Grey with his camero at Charm City Cakes. I think Mady was meant to be an only child. She looked like she was over the moon spending time with her mother.

Uh, right. Have you SEEN that contract? Or are you going by what Saints Kevin and Jody (who through one side of their mouths claim to have not spoken to J&K in a year and through the other side claim to be close confidants about important things like open marraige contracts)? Yes, they're such kind, loving, pure-hearted and selfless folks. An interview on Radar Online trashing their mother was SO HELPFUL for those kids.

And Kate went tanning on the sextuplets birthday. What's your point? Tanning is like a 30 minute appointment. So what? Why on earth would you anyone be upset that someone went tanning on their child's birthday....? I see not point to it...it's just so completely irrelevant.

Then again, maybe you're right. You should get together with some friends and send lots of emails to that tanning salon telling them they must institute a policy to confirm all birthdays of their clients children and then not allow them to have tanning appointment on those days. They are a hure part of this problem and that'll show 'em the error of their ways.

Kevin and Jodi mentioned nothing of the contract in their CBS interview. They mentioned it only to the tabloids. Had it been real and genuine, you would think they would have reiterated that on the CBS interview.

So to insinuate that we aren't watching the news is ridiculous. The contract was mentioned once and regurgitated and NOT validated by Jon who supposedly told them.

If Kate is out of town and her husband has the kids, the burden of who is watching them rests with him. It would not be her fault if Jon leaves the kids with the nanny.

I honestly have no problem with the defense of Jon--he was REALLY sweet and dare I say it NORMAL in his Utah interview last night. Seemed quite decent. I was like--WOW! I just can't picture what happened with him like that.

But--Matt Lauer looks all nice and cute and sweet--but has that adulterous/divorce pending side of him as well.

Surely you don't read the tabloids just to keep up with Jon and Kate. A quick google would reveal quite a bit about Matt Lauer that question whether or not he truly agrees with the shrink that Kate belongs at home.

Surely you are not claiming to be sexist in your post while you are defending Jon.

When I go out, I expect my husband to be able to care for the children including obtaining back up care if he needs to be away from home.

One year, I was away from home and a hurricane headed our way. Since such an occurrence is par for where we live, the plans were kept with everyone okay with it.

On the day my hubby drove me and my toddler daughter to the airport, he took my oldest to Disney World where she road the rides she just became tall enough for.

Then when his work campus reopened once the threat of the storm had passed, his mother who was going to watch our daughter at our house kept her at her home across the state (where they/we evacuated). This was done b/c he likely would come home to unknown damage (none!) and no power (eeek!). There he camped for the rest of my trip away and returned to pick up our oldest as well as me and my other daughter.

Now--if this were KAte....oh HOLY MOSES--would I have been ripped a new one. Especially since my trip was to....Hawaii. (sister getting married for her second time).

I could see the headlines now.

The nonsense is that KAte is just not allowed to live. Everything she does is put under a microscope and then news from an estranged couple who haven't spoken to the in 6-12 months is taken as gospel.

Do we have proof of contract?

Do we have Jon admitting to a contract?

No. We do not.

In a court of law--it is called hearsay. Not fact.

Illinois Mom, you sure do know a lot about skiing in Utah for a mom from Illinois.

I thought what Jon did was great. I don't necessarily mean the skiing (for free.) I mean giving exposure to a wonderful program which is helping to change perceptions about disabled people. Using J&K+8 to show how approachable and likeable and able someone with CP can be is great. Breaking down barriers and smashing stereotypes is a good thing. I sure hope some kids watching thought to themselves, "I can do that, too." Thanks, Jon!!!

I liked what I watched last night. I thought Kate's birthday celebration looked like a lot of fun and her and Maddie having a little girl time in San Diego was sweet. Jon seemed to do an excellent job at home during the San Diego trip -and he handled the Alexis situation very well. Kate having a tanning appointment on the same day as the tup's birthday doesn't bother me a bit. My youngest has a birthday tomorrow and I have to get my hair cut and work the night shift. I'm sure it will be a fun day regardless. As far as this alleged contract goes, I have to laugh whenever it's brought up in a serious tone. I mean really, just *THINK* about it! It makes no sense to me. JMO

A Mom-ynous said...

Illinois Mom--I appreciate the explanation.

However--I am puzzled. Is the defensive skier REAL and Jon was fulfilling that role or was he just pretending and endangering the disabled skier?

Having folks "pretend for show" to help and endangering the very people they are trying to help is a bit of a harsh opinion.

Also--WHY would Jon need to "help for show" to get a free lift ticket--when by all accounts (albeit, gossip) he and Kate get EVERYTHING featured on the show for FREE anyway.

If that is the case, he wouldn't "need" to do something extra just to get a lift ticket.

The anti-folks cannot speak out of both sides of their mouths and expect folks to believe that is the case.

So either his trip was not free and he did this to get a lift ticket, or his trip was free and perhaps he did this b/c it sounded like a great idea.

I don't have opinion one way or the other except that the accusations are inconsistent.

Mom of 2--with a still pic it would be difficult to determine random expressions such as a straight face or even a frown or even a random laugh.

Tabloids publish pics that suit the party-line.

So for example--the McCanns who had their daughter kidnapped from their room while on vacation as they ate dinner. They are very highly regarded as victims and Maddie's kidnapping to be real. But yet there are websites that post pictures of any happy moment. They posted several from the weeks following the kidnapping and there are much to show them to look purely elated.

However--anyone who has dealt with grief knows that those moments can happy.

The opposite is true--you can take someone who is enjoying themselves, but catch the right moment of an expression that appears as though the person is not happy and maybe even discuss.

So much contributes to these random expressions that a still photo cannot be trusted as an accurate stand alone representation of a person's feelings.

I'm sure with the sports setting that they had many expressions of KAte and they simply selected one that fit the gossip of the moment.

I hadn't until I came across a website that raked them over the coals. (though that is an understatement.)

I have no idea the sources and I just glanced at the site...but if one ever doubted the McCanns, that particular sight would only make one more firm in their opinions against them.

I'm not saying that I believed the pics--just how stills were utilized to condemn that family as being sinisterly involved with their daughter's disappearance.

Folks want to see her and her husband more sad---so the search is on for any and all "happy" images to show how "unsad" they are.

I think the opposite is true of Kate.

I think she has many very heartfelt enjoyable moments on the show--but any publicly non-TLC or positive publicity stills will continue to be of a looking-as-crabby-as-possible Kate.

For both the McCanns and the Gosselins--it is quite disturbing of the torture the public inflicts.

After watching the episodes and rewatching the premier it is obvious that Jon is having a serious maturity issue. I know they got married/had kids young but jeez wait until your kids are in their teens before you decide to act a fool.

I really think Jon is having a very early onset of a mid-life crisis. It's like one day he woke up and went "waait a minute, I don't want 8 kids, I don't want a show..I'm 18 again and I'm going club hopping and boarding!"

I honestly don't think any of this has anything to do with Kate's "behavior". Kate didn't turn into a strong personality overnight, a personality like that doesn't come out of nowhere, it is something a person is born with. I have a sneaking suspicion that Kate's personality and behavior is really small potatoes in the grand scheme of all of this. People as overbearing as Kate usually do well with someone who is willing to sit back and take direction. I honestly believe every word she is saying and I am not a big supporter of Kate. I always liked Jon better even with his passive-aggressive BS, but I do believe Kate when she says she doesn't know what happened.

With his famous name, he (or both he and Kate) really could start a non-profit that helps sick or handicapped kids. A lot of people who do so have the idea, and maybe the name/connections, but usually they hire a CEO or CFO or COO who really knows how to run an operation.

TWO GERMAN SHEPHERDS!

Now if I am to accept the party line that the family is breaking all sorts of laws, I would not expect to see a photo of German Shepherds since we all know that we heard from a reliable source's best friend's sister's fiance's cousin's pet poodle....

That the Gosselines got rid of the pooches.

We, as adults, always decided where to go and told the kids. They really didn't care or offer any imput.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Up until 2 days ago I too would have had a hard time believing that an 8 year old would have come up with San Diego. Last July we took our daughter who was just under 2 at the time to Sesame Place. Two nights ago during dinner my hubby and I were discussing possible summer vacation spots and of course our daughter wanted to know what we were talking about. We asked our daughter where she wanted to go on vacation this summer. She very quickly replied she wanted to go back to "Elmo's beach to swim in the pool." We were floored to say the least so I said "Where is Elmo's beach?" She thought for a few seconds and said "You know Mommy, where I had lunch with Big Bird....can I have more applesauce please?" (Got to love their attention span...lol.) We had an awesome time there last year and our daughter talked about it for a few weeks after the trip but we assumed she had long since forgotten it. But apparently she did not, which I have to say makes me extremely happy. We strive to fill her childhood with tons of happy memories but honestly who remembers much if anything from their toddler years. Needless to say I jumped on the internet after dinner and booked this summers Sesame Place vacation :) I'm sure Mady did inquire about getting to go somewhere special because Cara got to go skiing with Jon. And I can now see it may not be to far fetched that she did suggest San Diego because of their last trip there. I'm not sure if where they stayed this time is where they stayed last time, but if not I do seriously doubt Mady picked a "spa resort."
So the vacation may or may not have been staged. Using the assumption that she is just a child is not enough and undermines her own thoughts.
I just thought that place they stayed in on their way to Hawaii had invited them back and it coincided with one of Kate's speaking engagements. Wasn't that the same place they stayed? How nice to eat lunch outside on the patio and then just a few feet away, there's sand.
I am so in need of a vacation! :)
I believe Jon is the cover story of this week's People. (Honestly is any one else just amazed there is this much media attention on them?)
I'm amazed too, Anya. That means they've been in People magazine in some form for the last four weeks. Overkill. And, I really don't get why they need to give the constant updates on them. Unless it's some kind of TLC/People connection? That wouldn't surprise me. That's the only place I saw the ad for the premiere show was in People.
A Mom-ynous said...
Theresa--I don't know if there is a TLC/People connection but it does seem unusual.
But thus far Jon has been silent in regards to interviews--quick "I didn't do it" type responses, but no in depth interview.
People is known to get to the person and get their story.
It isn't Prince Di and Charles, but it is our most famous "seemingly perfectly happy couple" who truly was not on our soil and it has piqued the public's interest.
I'd have to let the other media experts weigh in on any professional liasons between the two groups.
As for children and travels--my children study geography as part of our curriculum and we enjoy traveling.
My 6 year old has been on a one year strong kick of wanting to go to China some day. She just REALLY wants to go. At age SIX!
Amazing!
People seem awestruck that my 8 year old knows what the Golden Gate Bridge is and where it is located. I'm thinking--that is kind of an odd tidbit, but whatever.
My son has taking a huge liking with little einsteins and we dug up one of our old storybooks with Rocket and the gang and what do I find.
The Golden Gate bridge and China!
LOL!
Kids absorb information and they do have likes and dislikes and it is unfathomable that that could not extend to an interest in destinations.
I've loved to travel ever since I knew what it traveling was.
Some folks just have a thing for that.
Interesting that Mady didn't want to go back to Utah! But as we recall, she wasn't too fond of the snow or the sporting aspects of that trip.
My 6 and 8 year old love to play spa and asks when they can go some day (read some literature at a Disney Resort that offers My first spa treatments).
So I can totally believe that Mady would have no issue with going to a spa and may have even requested to go to one since Kate has been to the quite a bit.
The services tend to be pretty mild for children--but a characteristic girly thing none the less. (My kids are partial to me providing pedi's and food massages.)
I hope no one here really believes Kate was actually in NYC on the kids' birthday giving that interview. Interviews are done in advance of when they are scheduled to appear. They have to be edited, go to proof-reading, and the pictures have to be chosen, among other things. Most likely it was done the week leading to the actual day and they threw in wording to make you think she was in a hotel room all by herself. All part of the publicity machine. If she was in NYC, how then could she go tanning in Penna? And please don't say she flew in and out that morning. Anyone who works in publishing, especially these tabloid-types like People, US, Entertainment Weekly knows how it works. Interviews are even done over phones and online these days.
AT any moment People can change from a planned cover to a breaking news cover. They did this with 9/11, death of major celebs, or anything sudden and shocking and major news (landing a plane in the Hudson).
The People issue with Kate's side of things was published within 7 days of the initial breaking story (someone with actual dates of publication can confirm this).
Paparrazzi photos confirmed that she was out of town on Mother's Day.
While I think Paparrazzi are slime, they only make money on CURRENT relevant photos--not stock photos of no relevance.
I also believe the article referenced she was being interviewed on Mother's Day weekend and word on the rumour mill was that it was done that Saturday.
I'm of the camp that they may have already had her booked for something and then capitalized on the moment since she was already doing interviews and the book tour and such.
The latter is just all speculation. But to confirm that the interview was done in the heat of the breaking news and not done weeks or months in advance.
Also--while I may not be in publishing--they have traveled to New York frequently AND many interviews are done in New York.
Remember--if you want the gig, sometimes you foot the bill to get them on YOUR turf.
It was alleged that the tanning was on Mother's Day--which would be one day after the interview allegedly took place.
There is no way that Kate's life was cover worthy until all hell broke loose and they had as much in the article as they did that they just happened to switch a few sentences.
People is a weekly publication like Time and Newsweek. Their production pace will be much different than a monthly publication.
You are silly to think Kate Gosselin is a sudden, shocking or breaking news story anywhere near 911 or the plane landing in the Hudson, or that any publication (other than a daily newspaper)would issue a breaking storyline. She posed for the pictures that week while she was in NYC and also gave the interview. She was there all week. On Saturday of that week she was in Bentonville (Sam's Club I think) and she was home and photographed on Sunday. Remember all the pictures of the paper towels and the little cake, the tanning salon? She left again on Monday. There are many breaking stories considered worthy of a cover story as you say, and there are cover stories that are planned in advance to coincide with new movies, CD's or television shows.There aren't too many real surprises. Believe me, this was a concentrated effort from her PR Team to capitalize on all the cheating rumors floating around and, I guess, to elicit sympathy for her as she was shown to be estranged from her 8 kids on Mother's Day when we all know she was at home with them.I do have to say that many people were not familiar with the Gosselins before the People cover came out and many people have said they have tuned in to see what all the fuss was about. So all these magazine cover stories are working.By the way, People, US, Entertainment Weekly are all issued weekly.
While partly true a magazine can take a photo and use it to spin any headline they damn well want. For example there was a cover story on Ok! or a magazine of that nature of Suri Cruise and Shiloh together. The photo was shopped, they were never together for the alleged "play date". It was a fabulous fake, but a fake none-the-less. Photos used for a tabloid story need not be current. They just need to fit the headline.
Most magazine and newspapers do have stock photos to use when necessary. If a tabloids story need not be 100% true do you honestly think the picture needs to be??
As for whether or not a magazine will "stop the presses" and issue a new cover. They only do it if the story is so relevant and breaking that NOT having it on the cover will cost them a huge amount of revenue. The cost of scrapping an entire publication and redoing a rush job usually does not warrant the increased sales from having it on the cover. Printing costs money.
Printing is not cheap by any means. It costs thousands upon thousands of dollars to print newspapers everyday. A magazine, with more pages/glossy paper/color pictures costs far more. So while they could "stop the presses" they won't unless there is a huge reason to do it. Can they push back the print deadline? Sure they can, for about a day or so, to get extra stories in but once a publication has gone to the printer it's pretty much said and done.
I know that I will be blasted for this.....
Why are we still defending Kate (and Jon?)? It is obvious that things are not what they seem.
They love the attention and limelight. Why would you vacation on a N.C. beach? If you make $40,000 per episode.. fly to a remote resort somewhere.
They need to be more aware of their children. They are more important then anything! Take them out of the spotlight! Can Kate do that for one second? No, she must parade them around for the "P" people.
If this is true and it appears that it is then J stinks . . .
I think that one of the biggest things that bothers me is that he shows so much disregard for his children.
Looks like Jon took his gal(Deanna) to Utah with him. It is in Us Weekly.I don't understand him sometimes. If he doesn't want the pictures taken, then why does he tempt people to take the pictures. Doesn't make sense to me. If I were him I would let things die down for a while before doing stupid things like that.
I wish the media would just go away with all this Jon and Kate stuff. I'm starting to think we are all being played out. At the same time I kind of hope we are being played out for the sake of those innocent kids. However much I dislike Kate and Jon, I want them to take the money and run already, cut their losses, jump ship....(insert your cliche here)
You know what I'm trying to say....
Shawna the only thing you'd be blasted for is telling other people how to spend their money, or what is "enough" in terms of payment. What's "enough" is not the issue or should be. LOL
You're right, as we all think, they should be thinking of the children. But, not defending them (especially after seeing Jon's latest pics), but I see the kids pics lately and see it this way: they have to live and that means doing their normal routines (and shows).
Most of the pictures we're seeing of the kids at the beach are "stills" from that episode. I also think that with the papparrazzi now, we are seeing the intrusive picttures. That's not good. I can see how it's "parading the children around". The People magazine pics were the ones from the birthday show.
Shawna, sorry it's late. I just wanted to quickly respond. I don't think you are going to get "blasted."
I guess what some perceive as "defending" is different to some of us. I don't feel it's my mission to defend Jon and Kate. I do find them interesting to discuss. You will find me speaking out against some of the rabid hatred that has been out in the internet since Kate first dared to brush the girls hair in the kitchen (oh my!).
Where they are now. Hmm. I don't know. I have questions and concerns, but I also like trying to figure things out. I think both J&K love their kids. I don't think either is a monster. So I am here with the rest of you speculating and trying to understand the behavior...
Let me clarify myself. The papparrazzi are taking pictures of the kids doing their normal thing (the show). While these aren't "true" stills from the show itself and TLC, these pics are taken intrusively by the tabloids magazines and websites.
Tired,
At this point do you really think they can jump ship? Yes they made a good deal of cash but that money won't last forever and honestly at this point there is absolutely no going back. It's not like they can just sink back into obscurity. It just doesn't really work like that. I think they could pull the plug right now and Kate could go on to a perfectly successful book and blogging career. Jon on the other hand would be so screwed.
I have to disagree with Andrea on one point. I think if Kate becomes "Kate" on her own, her career will not last long. She is not a great writer or public speaker. Her claim to fame is eight children. IMO the show has been popular for several reasons. 1. The unique situation. 2. The kids are beautiful and fun to watch. 3. The dynamics between Jon and Kate.
If there is no drama, the public's interest will start to fade. Kate has a lot of fans, but I think it is tied to the whole show. If you take away the cute children and her "whipping boy", there isn't much there. I guess she could write a book about being a single mom of eight kids.
I'm not sure what all the people that are so preoccupied with hating her would do then :). I guess the other TLC moms better hope Kate sticks around, all that venom isn't redirected.
I disagree. I think the bloggers and the "blog war" is more responsible for all of the media coverage than anything. The news outlets have learned that people either love or hate Kate, and are very passionate about it. I don't think there'd be such a fuss about it otherwise. If Kate were to end the show now and go it alone, I don't think it would shut the haters up. If anything, I think there'd be more digging into her personal life and more "insider" information because as we've seen before, if they can't see what she's doing, they'll make stuff up. They are only helping her fame and I believe they will continue to do so, show or no show.
ANDREA said...
Florida Mom,
Yes, the show is her jumping off point and the reason she is famous but if she stopped the show and switched to writing about the kids either in books or on a daily blog people would eat it up. Her "claim to fame" would still be what it is, the kids, but she could have a perfectly successful career writing/blogging about them right now. I honestly believe she would be perfectly successful if the show were to end, I'm not saying she could get a writing/blogging career if the show never happened, it is a springboard for her to do some stuff without the cameras.
Jon, on the other hand, has not really branched out much on his own and I just don't see it happening anytime soon so anything associated with the show will surely go away for him if he and Kate are not together.
massmom said...
I agree with FloridaMom. If the show ended, the public would very soon forget about Kate, and the haters would move onto someone else. I work as an estate manager for someone who was famous many years ago. This job has made me see that money is great, but it doesn't protect you from the every day problems we all face, plus more. The public in general, is very forgetful. The show "Jon and Kate plus 8" will fade away some day soon and they'll both be left wondering what happened to their marriage. It's very sad to me because they were so devoted to each other at one time.
................
I personally feel Kate would need a coauthor as in the case with her book written by Beth. Kate is not well versed and has a limited vocabulary....most writers have an extensive education/degree in the English language/Literary field. The only thing she could really write about is what she is famous for and how many books can you write about that? I highly doubt she can be recognized as a famous author...I think fans will enjoy reading about her family but outside of that there is no career in writing...you have to have a real connection with your readers to be a successful author and I feel there is a lot of disconnect there.
Someone posted the link of the pictures of Jon and his "girlfriend" in Utah that is on the US Weekly website. This is why I believe in the "contract" theory (though I doubt there is an actual paper contract.) If J&K were seriously working on their marriage, the girlfriend would be out of the picture - at least until they gave therapy a try.
I think J&K have decided it's over, and Jon really doesn't care enough about the facade anymore to really try to hide his immature impulses, which is why were still seeing photos such as this one.
On a side note, E! News today reported that Kate is thinking of moving to NC. This is just a personal theory, but I do think J&K did consider moving to NC. I think they told Jodi and Kevin - either because they were serious about moving there or because stories about them were getting out and they wanted to plant certain stories with people to see what rumors were made public. When it came out, they decided to go in another direction.
AAP -
I've never thought J&Ks marriage was healthy or functional. I think that any relationship would be taxed with two sets of multiples. Their dysfunctional relationship couldn't handle the stress. And unlike some others, I do place equal blame on J as K. She is definitely aggressive, but he is very passive-aggressive.
I agree with you that they may have deliberately told Kevin & Jodi that they were moving to NC to see if they were the source from where rumors were coming.
So along those lines, Is there a chance that J deliberately told Kevin & Jodi about his suspicions that K was having an affair and about an alleged "contract" because J knew that they would funnel it out?
BTW, it isn't uncommon for people who are attracted to someone outside their marriage to accuse their own spouse of being unfaithful. It's projection at it's worst, but it does happen.
Personally, I think that he is immature and passive aggressive enough to do that.
I tend to think that he is involved with Deanna Hummel and I think that a little drinking problem is going to be revealed soon. Just a hunch.
I think all this is just publicity and we are being taken in by TLC and Jon & Kate for the money and ratings.
I would also like to comment on the blame game we are all playing with...team Jon or team Kate. Well I have gone back and forth and still think this is all a ploy for us to watch their show, and we are! I don't agree with the idea that "we are doing this for our children's sake" these children need to start living a normal life with both parents guiding them and providing them with a secure loving family without benefit of the cameras in their faces! They also need the love of grandparents and other family members. Not shunned from them.
