How surprising the comment section was turned off....I am glad it was. The haters have enough outlets for their hate. We have all heard all their accusations before. Not interested in seeing the smut posted again.

I don't get the Kate worship. I basically like Kate. I "get" her sense of humor. I am glad she has her faith to fall back on. She just isn't someone I admire per se. To me, Kate is doing what she needs to for her family. Same as the majority of us do everyday. We are all heroes or just folks getting by - it all depends on one's perspective IMO.

I don't get the worship of Kate neither. I had a friend drive up to Bellevue, WA for her book signing and asked if I wanted to go. I like the show but not enough to drive 4 hours to see 3 seconds of Kate Gosselin. This article just proves Kate and the show is popular and they have a large following. Great for them.

I'm with you guys on not worshiping Kate. I like her, I get why she does the things she does. Yes, she gets a little "snippy" and yes, she sometimes does things I'm not sure I would do with my own child but I don't live her life. The thing I don't get is why she gets grief for going and making money for her family. Lots of men/husbands travel for work and are gone a week at a time or several days at a time. She is getting so much hate because she travels for her job. I don't blame them for doing all they can to make money now b/c the show isn't going to last for another 14-15 years until the little kids are 18. I understand why people think she should be at home but she WAS at home for a large portion of their toddler years while Jon worked. Now, he might not enjoy his stay at home job as much as he would like but at least one of them is home. I just don't get all the hatred for her. Sorry to get on my soap box :). I'm sure if my life was taped there would be plenty of people to complain I wasn't doing SOMETHING right. As long as these children aren't being abused (AND THEY ARE NOT BEING ABUSED) I think they are doing the best they can with 8 children.

Q said...

I still think that they could stop the show now and still live very well off of doing speaking engagements and book tours. They could just do yearly specials. That would not be as introusive on the lives of the kids. But what do I know?

Im glad the comment section was turned off. I don't understand the worship of Kate at all but I don't hate her. I don't agree with all her decisions but they are hers to make not mine.

Three Amazing Kids: I agree, IMO they would be just fine financially if they quite tapping weekly shows but that would mean less money and at this point I think Jon and Kate are just too attached. And honestly there will be a time when its not possible for them to film constantly so why not make all they can now? I understand what your saying, but I also think I understand some of Jon and Kate's reasoning.

Eileen said...

If what Jon & Kate have said in the past is true, "The show is our life, and our life is the show" I don't see them voluntarily stopping the show (although I'm not sure Jon still feels that way if he was reluctant to continue with a fifth season, unless that was all baloney spouted just to keep interest, if he was being sincere I don't think he thinks their show is their life anymore, or at least he doesn't want it to be their life anymore).
I know Kate in her answer about how long the show would continue said, "They say until my last breath", but I wonder who 'they' are? And I would have liked to hear what her opinion is, unless it's the same as 'they', and she would like for the show to continue until her last breath.
I always feel sorry for people who's jobs are their life, too much of your very being gets wrapped up in it and then when the job is gone (through whatever means, job loss, retirement, career in a downward spiral) they suffer such self-esteem issues.
My husband is wonderful at his job and is well compensated monetarily, but I always remind him that his job is not him, it's not us, it's not his family, it is just a means to help us along, and if it goes away, the important things we have will still be here, and we've been poor before and if that is in our future again, we'll get through it again.
As much as I love my home and the things in it, I know they are just things, they might be cherished things, but if I lost them all tomorrow I'd survive very nicely.
I hope that Jon & Kate feel the same or they will be in for a rude awakening because nothing lasts forever.

I was glad to see that a publication FINALLY had the good sense to turn the comments off!

"The commenting function on this story has been turned off because of abuse."Funny, they accuse the Gosselin's of exploitation, but when it comes right down to it, look who the real abusers are.

Golf clap. Take a bow, Trolls!

Ann said...

I didn't see this article until after they shut the comments off. I have seen other articles and usually it's the haters who are abusing the comment section, though at the Philly Mag article, it was abusive on both sides (what I could stand to read anyway.) There are always reasonable people too, neither haters nor worshippers, and it's a shame the comment threads get so nasty and down right nutty.

Three Amazing Kids, I agree that updates would not be that intrusive. I also think there is a way to do the show so that it's not so intrusive on a weekly basis. Less "private" (everyday) moments usually means more "scripted" scenes though, and many people don't like the travelling or the free shopping/painting/solar panels, etc. shows. It's got to be hard to balance.

I know we have no real idea how much money the do have, but I agree that they certainly seem well-off.

Ann said...

Breedings,
ITA about Kate working. Most of her traveling does not involve the kids. And, no, we are not seeing abuse on that show. We do not see animal abuse either.

Breedings said...

Saint,
You are right, we aren't seeing animal or child abuse but we aren't seeing everything else either. We aren't seeing things that people assume to be happening. People just decide that certain things MUST be happening. We KNOW nothing. I shouldn't haven't capitalized anything about abuse....because we don't know that.

Ann said...

Breedings,
Great point, very well said.

I agree Anya. I think Kate is and always has done what she needed for her family. It's like what we all do.

I like Kate, I think she's a good mom. I like the fact she has evolved. Would I wait a few hours in line to meet her? No, I don't have that kind of time. I don't worship her either, and I don't get the total worshipping thing either. (whether on Kate or anybody).

Eileen, I think Jon was indeed spouting baloney about not wanting to do another season. IMO, I think he was just embarrassed after that whole picture fiasco, and that was his reaction. After seeing the Green show, he seems fine.

Glad the comment section of that article was turned off. About time one publication was wise enough not let the same dribble and idiots through to taint a fair article.

It's been a nice long, hot and sticky weekend. Going to retire tonight early.

Have a great Monday!

When it comes down to it, the "Haters" are really cowards - because given all the opportunities to protest Kate at one of her appearances and/or signings, they haven't yet.

Food for thought.

I believe that in context all Kate was saying was a variation on "what you see is what you get" - in other words, they show isn't scripted. I don't think it had anything to do with her declaring that the show was their life in any other sense, particularly in the sense that it means everything to them, which is how it seems to be taken a lot of the time.

Eileen said...

Videonitekatt, I always wondered about that, if there's such a backlash against the show, then where are all the protesters?
I wonder if there is even a big letter-writing campaign out there?

I think the hate is just a form of internet gossiping. It's like-minded people getting together to rip apart whatever it is they don't like (it happens with more than Jon & Kate, although that Gosselin hate really does seem to be rabid, more along the lines of what Hollywood celebs and Perez Hilton did to Miss California, and more along the lines of the 'hate everything to do with Sarah Palin, even her children' type of hatred).

I live in the Raleigh area, and Kate's appearance at the fairgrounds this weekend was highly publicized. I didn't go, as I'm not a huge fan of Kate (could take her or leave her really...I think I'm more interested in the blogs about her than I actually am in her). There was a paragraph in the News and Observer article that was interesting...

"Gosselin might be the mother of eight, but she also has other things that elevate her in the eyes of some Triangle women - fame, great clothes, a sleek figure, a big new house, cute kids, books that are best sellers and, thanks to her stardom, the means to stay home with her family and take them on expensive vacations."

I'm not sure why, but this paragraph hits a nerve with me. I moved to Raleigh because of a job, and I'm not a huge fan of this city. I grew up in a big city full of diversity, but in Raleigh it's different. It's a huge suburb full of cookie-cutter houses with young families that seemingly are all competing with each other (that's just my experience). I totally get why Kate Gosselin is "elevated in the eyes of some Triangle women." Which really bothers me. I personally think the whole image of Kate Gosselin is cheesy, and the fact that women want to be like her makes me feel like they feel no empowerment to stop competing with other people and just do their own thing. Sorry if this makes no sense. As you can tell, I'm not fan of Raleigh.

I find it interesting how she speaks at invited events and seemingly declines all other media interviews at the locations )(except the national ones like LHJ, People and GH).

It's pretty savvy. Some people will speak to anyone who asks. This way, they control the image of the family that gets out there.

I found her answer about how long the show to go on interesting. The answer always changes. (if the kids don't want to anymore, then Jon says he doesn't know, then Kate says until she stops breathing).

I have told myself I won't watch anymore when the new season starts. I used to be addicted and watched as it ran. It was interfering with my husband and my time together after kiddies went to bed. And I'd be frustrated watching (like the 9th inning of a tied baseball game). And he would walk in the room and wonder why I was wasting my time. Maybe a happy medium would be to tape it and watch whenever I had 22 minutes (I love no commercial-Tivo) the next day or so. But the trip shows bore me now, so who knows....

As far as quit taping and do a few specials a year, maybe they are nervous if they leave the public eye, no one will be interested in watching some updates.

It breaks my heart that there is SO MUCH HATRED for this woman. Okay, she's not perfect, she's not pretending to be. She doesn't try to pass herself off as the nicest person in the world who always does the right thing or the kindest thing, but she's REAL and this is a REALITY show.

I hate to use the "J" word, but I can't help but think that people who hate her are just extremely jealous that Kate can be herself (and it's not always pretty) and still be paid and profit from just being herself, warts and all. It's seething overwhelming jealousy that brings out all these horrific comments whenever there's an article about Kate out there. The irony of it is that the people who make these awful comments are demonstrating the behavior that they say they hate about Kate, and frankly, much much worse behavior, yet they don't see it.

It's very sad, and it just makes me want to support the family (and Kate) all the more. The Gosselins are good and real and I'm happy for them. I wish the best for all of them, always.

What is a Triangle Woman?

LaWanda said...

MrsRef...a Triangle Woman is a woman shaped like a triangle. Just kidding...sorry, I should've explained in my original post. The "Triangle" refers to the "Research Triangle," which includes the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. I think. I'm new to this area, so I may be a little off. But that was always my understanding

Eileen said...

LaWanda, that was so funny!! I really did laugh out loud! And I had a mouth full of coffee too!

MrsRef said...

Thank you! I had never heard that term before. I was leaning toward the woman shaped like a triangle explanation.

Heather said...

I live in Raleigh and was very disappointed not to be able to go. She got here at 2 p.m. and I knew it would be a madhouse and require me to take the whole afternoon off work. Maybe she will come to a bookstore and I can go to a signing. I am dying to know if she is a rude as people claim - which I highly doubt.

The story made the front page our of newspaper Saturday and I heard people talking about it at the pool. I think it's interesting how young people (I'm 27) love Kate, but the ones her age seem to not like her as much. I think she's a hoot!

Samantha@IW said...

LaWanda

I can see why it struck a nerve with you! I don't know who wrote that but if I were a triangle woman I would be very offended. We live a couple hours away from Raleigh but I have a lot of friends there. That little write up makes women in the area look shallow and materialistic (no doubt some are, but what a blanket statement). Not to mention it makes them seem like they view children as accessories!

LaWanda said...

SamanthaNC, thank you for saying that better than I could. I think it was the word "elevated" that hit the nerve. Kate did not overcome a tragic situation, nor is she any kind of hero. So I'm not understanding why she should be elevated. But what really bothers me is that people do "elevate" her. To like her because of her sense of humor (per Heather's comments) is one thing (I like her sense of humor, too); but to put her on some pedestal is what I don't understand. But I also don't understand the extreme hatred expressed towards her and her family either. The whole Gosselin craze just intrigues me I suppose.

Eileen said...

Amen, LaWanda! My sentiments exactly.
What's up with people thinking she's evil incarnate? She's a human being with flaws, just like the rest of us (I know I'm probably more flawed than she any day of the week). I'm no fan, but I can't abide the hate.
And by the same token, what's up with people thinking she's royalty, or making every excuse they can find in order to justify her not-so-nice behavior? To me, that's almost as much of a turn-off as the hateful comments.

Sherry, ITA.... It also astounds me that those who hate the show, although they claim not to be haters, also consider those who like the show or who just are not haters, to be as evil as they consider Kate to be.

For people to waste so much energy on a show they proclaim to hate boggles the mind! Something is definitely wrong with this picture. I didn't know it was a sin to NOT be a hater, but I guess I must be a sinner, because I couldn't live my life with the amount of venom that some of these people have for Kate Gosselin. Kate is not the one with the problem. The ones who are out to "get" her are the ones who need to rethink their motives, IMHO.

Sherry, interesting perspective. Whether we attach the "jealous" label or not (and I know a lot of Kate detractors will claim that is not the case), I found your theory illuminating. The concept that perhaps it is not the material possessions she has acquired, but the fact that she can show her true self - "warts and all" - and the show remains popular, and, in fact, Kate herself seems to draw viewers and fans as much as the adorable sextuplets.

I can't agree with you more Quiltart. It makes me wonder what these people are like in real life with their families, their friends, at work...are they showing that hate in other ways, too? Are they just a menace to society in general? It would seem to me that they would be considered dangerous individuals if they lived their lives with such hate like they show on other blogs. I know that may be going extreme, but when people spew forth their venom and hate like we've seen, in some cases it may not be far off. Very pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Quiltart and Theresa, I absolutely agree! And also to spew that much hate about people you really don't even know would mean, IMO, that you are basically full of hate and beyond any rational reasoning.

Also, why would anybody want to spend so much time focussing on hate? If you don't like the Gosselin's thats fine but why focus a good part of your energy blogging about how much you hate them? Why watch the show when you really don't like it?

I just don't understand some people.

Ann said...

Maybe a happy medium would be to tape it and watch whenever I had 22 minutes (I love no commercial-Tivo) the next day or so.Now I am jealous. I want to fast-forward past commercials and annoying scenes and watch the 15 minutes or so that I really like. I want Tivo CincyMom!

Darlene Williams said...

Tivo is great. I wouldn't be able to watch the shows I watch if I didn't have tivo.

I don't understand the hate towards Jon and Kate neither but I guess some people enjoy this kind of thing. They want us to open our eyes to all the horror of the Gosselin's and my response to them is to go see a psychologist.

Heather said...

I agree. I see no point in watching a show that you hate. I think it really undermines their argument, and makes no sense whatsoever!

Anonymous said...

I do still watch Jon and Kate. I don't absolutly love the show nor absolutely hate it. I don't hate either of them as I have never met them. I can say I disagree with how they handle situations. However, I no longer see it as, well she can do it with 8, so can I with 2. I see it as, ok what will my kids now ask for we cannot afford if I let them watch? All the trips of late on the show have bummed me out. I liked in the early days seeing how the family made it work. She was at Borders in Oakbrook, IL a while back and I did not go.

Anonymous said...

I agree Jennifer A. I don't watch because I love her, I watch because I do find the show interesting, if I miss one its definitely not a big deal. I liked the show much better when they weren't taking all the trips but if I were filming anyway and offered free trips I think I would take them too......

merryway said...

It's pretty savvy. Some people will speak to anyone who asks. This way, they control the image of the family that gets out there. I think so too. I also think the interest was increased since there wasn't much info other than the show. Unless you went to a church to hear them speak, there was just J&K's old site and the blogs.

Looking back, I liked it more when the kids were younger and not as self-sufficient. The “how to handle all those kids” part was fun to watch. They're still adorable. I am wondering if there will be changes in editing w/J&K as producers.

Also, why would anybody want to spend so much time focussing on hate? If you don't like the Gosselin's thats fine but why focus a good part of your energy blogging about how much you hate them? Why watch the show when you really don't like it? I just don't get the time spent on hating. I'm happy a mom is in the spotlight. When was the last time there was someone famous and well-received just for being a mom? The homs may make their family unusual, but on some level, Kate's been doing what a lot of us have done or are doing. I like the attention and hope it inspires respect for women and moms.

Maybe a happy medium would be to tape it and watch whenever I had 22 minutes (I love no commercial-Tivo) the next day or so I think TLC show reruns. :)

Alot of haters think its easy to have a blog of their own now and bash people on it. Well I;m insulted because its a lot of hard work! I take offense to those that think it can be done so easily! (lol)

I don't get why those that are fans like myself are labeled as worshiping Kate. I only worship that pile of money from the GEICO commercials that is following me around trying to tell me what I COULD be saving. I'm not a jealous nasty bitter troll and proud of that, but not putting her on the highest of pedestals. I am a fan of her personality (YES you read right) and love the show and the kids. I get her and understand why she does what she does and I'm truly happy for all her success.

That being said there is nothing more frustrating to me that feel that they have enough money now so they can stop doing their show so I as a pretend hater can feel I can something to do with the demise of their show. Right now, in this unstable economy, you can NEVER have to much in the bank. So I'm looking to pitch my OWN show starring me following that wad of money with the eyeballs across the US.....
