New Episode - The Big Move

After lots of planning and preparation, the Gosselin clan finally packs up and moves to a more spacious home. Jon and Kate say goodbye to the house where their children spent most of their young lives, and the family embarks on a new chapter of life.

Can't wait to see them all settled in and how everything looks, how the kids adjust. Hoping to see Beth :) Also, hopefully there won't be another firestorm as a result of the move!

I am really hoping to see more of the house and decorating, etc. But I would guess, like most of us, the move is rough and will take time to get all set up.

And it sounds like there will be a emotional goodbye to the old house, too.

Love the new look on the blog!

This could be an emotional episode for Jon and Kate. Even tho they said that house was never there home, alot of changes happened there, including the tups growing up.

I loved when they first walked in the front door and up the stairs to their new bedroom.

I truly hope we see some happy and loving moments and not just Kate barking orders.

Saint said...

I hope we see the "soft side" of Kate, too. I agree CincyMom and Fiona, this might be emotional for the Gosselins. This is an example of something I can "relate to" with the Gosselins.

I think it will be fun to watch. I can't imagine the amount of work to move that many people. I look forward to seeing how she has the house furnished.

CincyMom said...

And another thought. When I moved with 2 little kids three years ago, I had friends watch them on playdates so I could get cleaning done, etc. And they weren't running around when the truck was unloading, they came back afterward. Wonder if we'll see some of that.

I hope for Jon, he had someone do the moving. I know he moved himself last time. We've always been lucky enough to borrow trucks and have always moved ourselves. But I've always dreamed of forking over $1,000 to have someone pack, move and unpack.

But if I had that chance, I might at least rethink the pack and unpack to do myself. I'd worry about things and not know where things were. But someone else is ALWAYS welcome to move the boxes!

I am looking forward to this episode. I want to see how the kids are enjoying their new home. The kids do need more open space, inside and out.

I also wonder if we will see Kate doing any shopping for furniture. That house has alot of rooms that need to be furnished.

Hopefully, Kate will be nice to Jon and the kids.

I am very excited to watch tonight episode!

yourmama, I too hope that they show Kate shopping for the new house! It would be great to see Beth again and perhaps we will get a chance if she helped out on the decorating?!!??

I too am looking forward to this episode. I hope no one in the family cries. I automatically cry if I see someone else cry whether it is in real life or on television. My husband and coworkers regularly makes fun of me for it. =)

FIONA said...

Cincy Mom,

It is SO nice to have the moving company come in and pack all your stuff and move it! But I don't think I would pay for it myself...the hubbys job always paid.

If I was just going a little ways I would rent the truck and have a moving party.

Either way, moving is a pain in the rear!

And as for the cleaning, I would have to do the kitchen and bathrooms myself!

My hubs has been in the hospital and I wouldn't let him touch anything until I sani-wiped it all down...I can relate to Kate on that. Hospitals, bathrooms and kitchens...I need to know they are cleaned to my standards.

CincyMom said...

Oh Fiona!
Bathrooms are a special (horrid) place for me. I came to my new house (50 yrs old) with 2 new toilet seats and my husband had to put them on. I thought I would hurl just because who knows what went on there before us!

I, too, would clean my own kitchen/ baths. I might be OK with someone cleaning them first, but would still need to do the final go-over.

It's funny, because I have clutter accumulate around my house and clean it every few days, not hourly or daily, but a gross bathroom...EWWWWWWWW!

Can't wait to see everyone settled . Really excited to see how the rooms are decorated. Hope they are happy.

I think the thing about seeing Kate be nice - she IS nice and loving to her family. At least part of every episode, usually. People have to be willing to see it - it's not that it's not happening.

Now, if what people are really saying is, "I hope we can see an entire episode without Kate being pissy", that may not be likely. Kate is Kate. But to suggest that every episode is JUST "Kate barking orders" is a complete misrepresentation of the show.

Saint said...

Now, if what people are really saying is, "I hope we can see an entire episode without Kate being pissy", that may not be likely.

Yeah, that is what I meant. Lol! She's nicer in some episodes than others. But your right...it is Kate being Kate. I'll probably NEVER be 100% comfortable with Kate being Kate, though I have come a long way! That's just Saint being Saint, though. And I agree totally that she has lots of warm moments in every episode. Without a doubt she loves her husband and children, and just as telling, they love her back.

Saint said...

I pulled late carpooling duty for the high school musical try-outs so I have to miss the episode! Darn! I'll be reading tomorrow afternoon though.

According to CNN.com, Kate will be on tonights Larry King show to discuss the octuplets. This show airs at 9pm, the same time as J&K+8. Which show will GWOP watch?!

Mary said...

I'm excited to see this episode too. I have a class tonight so I have to set the TIVO before I leave. I think we will see lots of different moments with Kate. Think about it. Moving is stressful no matter how much help you have. It's confusing and things are buried in boxes all over the place. The kids will probably be running around and Jon will be leaving most of the figuring out to Kate (I think). Most likely she will be happy in some scenes and then be shown having a melt down in others. After all, they need to show the controversial stuff to keep it interesting LOL! I really hope they are enjoying their new home. I know I would be if I lived in it!

Desben said...

I have to run errands and then meet my sister (and best friend) for dinner. I'll tivo then see what happens. I'm looking forward to this. I wonder if she is going to use alot of her old furniture or purchase all new. This should be a good episode.

FIONA said...

There is a dreadful person at my place of employment. She is rude, malicious, self-absorbed, etc....but when it comes down to dealing with her issues, we always hear, "that's just Marcie being Marcie". I think that is a terrible excuse. Just because we have grown accustomed to something doesn't mean we should excuse it...

Kate's overall behavior is rude to say the least. You can call it "Kate just being Kate" but it doesn't change how she behaves.

Kate barking orders is completely representative of how she behaves most of the time. That is her norm.

Fiona,

I have to agree with you. Change is good, and Kate does need to change her overall behavior. She is rude, and I could use some other words to describe her at times. I also see her as barking orders on all the episodes.

I'm not trying to excuse her behavior. I don't feel the need to - it would be different if I were dealing with her directly.

I am simply saying that individuals have their personality quirks and I wouldn't expect Kate's to change overnight. If she was nice as pie for a whole episode, people would call her phony, and they'd probably be right.

Kate barking orders is completely representative of how she behaves most of the time. That is her norm.

In your opinion. In my opinion, haters see what they want to see.

Miranda said...

I agree.
I think in most episodes Kate shows her good side. I think her Type A personality makes her kind of neurotic..which she freely admits.
But it's obvious that she loves her family and seems to be a fun person to be around.
She just has quirks...but, don't we all?

Lizabeth said...

Caught all but a couple minutes in the middle of the show- stupid working late cause other people don't do their jobs right. Grr.

Anyway, I like that the kids went to friends houses-- someone up thread mentioned that would be better than having them underfoot so it appears that they a) have friends whose houses they can go to and b) this is an option Kate and Jon were happy to go with.

I agree with her about how when you move and have to box everything up its tough to balance what can get packed early with what you need now.

I am so glad they got movers to help-- then again nothing makes unpacking easy. I still have most of my belongings packed up (since I am house hunting) and its really frustrating to dig through boxes for something you need!

Kate seemed to be self deprecating as always-- she was making jokes and laughing about how everything is getting taken apart etc. She seemed calm and just ready to transition. Kate was smiling and delegating instead of just getting in the way of the movers-- they had a job to do and she was able to just step back and let them do what they were there for. Her "Welcome everybody in the whole world" then the "so facetious..." line was hilarious.

I totally agree that finding piles of garbage and junk under something like a deep freezer in an unfinished basement is disgusting as well as a safety hazard.

The boys were adorable with their shoes!

I'm glad she talked about how the kids deserve the house-- that everything they do is for the kids. This is something she has said before but I wish they would talk about it more often.

SamanthaNC said...

Too cute! Loved the kids walking on the boxes- funny. It was fun seeing them play outside and I laughed so hard when Kate started fussing about the coupon. See, she really does use them. Collin was so cute telling Joel he had the wrong shoe. I cant wait to see everything come together.

MoreCowbell said...

They're going to need some furniture to fill those huge rooms.

I laughed at ALL the sextuplets jumping on the boxes and when Jon caught them, they all blamed Alexis and SHE got punished. Poor Lexie. I'm surprised we didn't hear her shrill little voice say, "Uh UH. THEY ALL DID IT TOO." I think Hannah tried to clue Jon in, but he was at the point where he just didn't want to hear it. I admit that I cringed when they showed them walking on the boxes and denting them in. I would have yelled, too!

I wonder if the crew clues J&K in later when the wrong tup gets blamed for something.

I notice they are being careful not to show the outside of the house. Disappointing. I'd like to see it, but totally understandable considering what has gone on with certain disgruntled non-fans. It's becomes a security issue and that's too bad. The other TLC families don't have to resort to those measures. It's really unfortunate that the Gosselins do.

Daisy said...

I won't see the show for 2 more hours so thanks to Lizabeth and Samantha for the snippets to look forward to.

Theresa, thanks for the laugh! I'm glad I wasn't drinking something when I read your comment!

MoreCowbell said...

I just had a thought. DO you think the old owners, knowing that they sold their house to the Gosselins, are tuning in to see what they do with their old house (because we're all curious to see what our old residences look like once we leave and other people take over). I wonder what they think of Kate ranting about the moldy fridge last week and tonight's comments about the debris under the freezer?

Maybe they'll contact Julie and tell her to get the "truth" out that they're really NOT slobs? She's good at that stuff, right?

SamanthaNC said...

Oh I almost forgot! Jon's hair is coming in nicely, it looks realy good.

Granted I know some people frown on such observations- so vain, so shallow, so irrelevant! They're way too intellectual and self-important for such nonsense, but I'm not. It looks great :)

Samantha,
Just because she was fussing, that does not mean she really uses them. I have never seen a twenty dollar coupon for a fifty dollar product!! I wouldn't really call what she was doing "fussing" but more "badgering." According to Jon, he was trying to put together beds, fix a shower head, among other things, and Kate is going on and on about him finding a freaking receipt, as they are moving in to a 1.3 million dollar home, with a $4,000 dollar new fridge.
Bizarre. I really do not care if they have millions of dollars, I just wish Kate would stop pretending that it is a huge crisis if Jon forgot to use a coupon. I wonder if she used a coupon for the new stainless steel fridge? What a waste of time cleaning the other one.

Hi Hannah, I'm not looking for a conspiracy so I'm going with the train of thought that if she stomps around the house rifling through a drawer fussing, yes fussing, about coupons its bc they are important to her. Perhaps its regional- but where I'm from Fussing is scolding, which is exactly what I meant.

I agree. Kate regularly says, "That's just Mady being Mady", but it's still not ok
( Mady's behavior ).

I had to laugh when Kate was saying snarkily about Jon, "Annoying Annoying Annoying" when he was trying to find the darn receipt. If she only knew how annoying she was. I seriously don't think she knows.

And we know this because....?

For the life of me, I don't remember Jon or Kate speaking of spending $4,000 for a new fridge OR bragging about getting one.

MoreCowbell said...

What $4000 fridge? That fridge came with the house, thus the hissy fit she threw last week because the inside was filthy and moldy. They left the appliances in their old house, including TWO new stainless steel front loading washers and dryers, because this new house already had appliances in it.

ITA!

I forgot to quote Hannah in my last post.

I checked the "other" board for a second and that "brand, new stainless steel fridge" is the talk to the board over there.

I just love how people can pull figures out of the air and be so certain about it. As I stated before, I didn't hear Jon or Kate speak of purchasing a new fridge nor the price for this purchase.

tiger said...

They do not need to talk about buying a new fridge. We saw it and it looks different than the one we saw last week.

Laura said...

Hannah, you said "I have never seen a twenty dollar coupon for a fifty dollar product!!"

I think what Kate was referring to was those 40% off coupons that are always in the paper. Jon prob got the stuff at Bed Bath & Beyond or something and they let you use a coupon for every single item if you bring em! I don't care how rich someone is, a coupon is a coupon and if you have it you might as well use it!

It might be just the mood that I'm in, but this episode ranks up there with other episodes that are about packing for trips except that this one is about
"unpacking."

I did think that Joel was cute when he said something like, "I fall down everyday."

==========================

After the new episode they re-ran one of the NC Beach House episodes. It was interesting to me that they did a lot of close ups of the kids and Kate . . . . chewing gum. I hadn't noticed it before.

Do you think that was an odd coincidence or do you think that was deliberate editing?

Just curious as to all of your thoughts.

Wow. You seem to know a lot of inside info. You know Kate was lying about the coupon (to what purpose?). You know how much her refrigerator cost (!!!!), and you know that she was only pretending to care about the coupon. Are you clairvoyant?

I had to laugh when Kate was saying snarkily about Jon, "Annoying Annoying Annoying" when he was trying to find the darn receipt. If she only knew how annoying she was. I seriously don't think she knows.

Such lack of self-awareness appears to be an epidemic; Kate certainly isn't the only sufferer!

I checked the "other" board for a second and that "brand, new stainless steel fridge" is the talk to the board over there.

Well, of course. Bitching about the kitchen appliances of total strangers is an integral part of child advocacy.

I thought it was a cute episode. My fave lines were Joel's "I fall down every day" and Alexis shrugging to the camera, "Why are you looking at us?"

I think either Guin/Nina/Saint wrote last week defending Kate about haters turning their interview comments into fact. The example was if someone were to say I'M NEVER LATE, and they are late once in a while, it's a matter of speech, not a lie.

It's not an exaggeration, it's conversation. My point is that Kate said with a straight face last night (paraphrasing) Jon has taken apart the twins beds 10 times.

The haters will cry LIE! I counted 4 times! But come on - she was making a dry statement.

Kate.can.be.dry. I get it, unfort, others won't.

For me, it sheds light on the inconsistencies that others bring up - like McDonalds. The tups have NEVER had fast food, well, I have stated I always eat healthy, so am I lying, considering I order french fries occasionally?

Last time I checked $20 is 40% off of $50. Every person I know gets those coupons all the time from Bed,Bath, and Beyond (and Linens and Things when they were still around)

I never buy anything there without a coupon either.

Im not sure why the obsession about the fridge either, perhaps they just took the panels off the old one or *gasp* maybe the old one didnt work properly and they didnt realize it until after they moved in. Or maybe they just wanted a new one.

Too Funny said...

About the coupons and how everyone at the "other" site keep referring to them.....I don't think it's he fact that Kate is giving the wrong message about their financial status when coupons are mentioned, as much as it is them misinterpreting what is happening.

They somehow equate coupon using as that meaning you have to be poor or struggling financially. But in reality, MANY TYPES of people use coupons. Poor, middle class, and the rich. Coupons aren't just limited to the needy/poor. And the sooner people realize that, the better.

If people understood that ALL kinds of people use coupons then they wouldn't be sitting there each time Kate mentions coupons complaining how she is crying poor.

You can be well off financially and still use coupons, look for ways to save a buck, etc. And by saying you do those things does not mean that you are crying poor.

Too Funny said...

I, like others who mentioned it, think they just took the panels off of the frig. Afterall, we know how Kate likes to hang her calendar and other stuff on it. And, with those panels on, it would have been impossible for her to do that.

lulubae said...

The fridge thing, IMHO is a moot point. It's THEIR house and can furnish it as they wish. Or must I check with my neighbors before I purchase an appliance for my apt.?

I don't necessarily think Kate is a dreadful person. Would we be best friends? No, not really. But that doesn't make her a dreadful person. We all have different personalities. Imagine if we were all the same? This blog would then be quite boring (that's why I don't go to "other" places. I hate reading/seeing things that give me the image of a broken, skipping record in my mind).

The house was lovely and they all seem genuinely happy to be able to enjoy it.

The cutest thing was Joel just whacking into the ground and saying "I fall everyday". He just got right back up and kept on going. As it should be, and as I think this entire family has kept on doing. I think that's a great lesson to teach your kids whether you're on tv or not.

jace said...

I completely believe that Kate uses coupons. It absolutely in her character to do so.

I think that many well-off people are careful enough with their money to go to the bother of using coupons.
I mentioned in one of the other discussions that I saw my lawyer in the store recently with a stack of coupons in her hand. Or maybe she was just pretending...

merryway said...

I liked the episode. I can see why some interpret their life as lonely because we never see them with their friends/family anymore. There's certain times you just expect to see friends and family around. I miss seeing Aunt Jodi, Kevin and Beth. Jon did say he was going to be doing some stuff with his younger brother. I think it's makes for a more pleasant show with that type of interaction.

The kids were adorable. I like how we saw the little ones talking to the crew a little more. It was super cute how the kids decided to fix the boxes they squished by banging on them.
It looks like they are having fun on their property. Neat that Jon was talking about how they have hiding places. It always feel a little strange moving into a new place and takes a while to make feel like home again. I want to see how they are going to fill up. I thought it was funny that all their boxes from the old house fit into one room in the new house.

I like to use coupons for everything I can. Way to go Kate! She used way too many paper towels to clean up a little spill. No No No!!! Trees are our friends.

I think Kate is becoming calmer and seemed like she was handling the move really well. I enjoyed her little statements about being okay to be messy while you're moving. I can't stand her scolding Jon like he's one of the kids. It just seems unnecessary to me.

The interest in if the fridge is new is ridiculous. The hater's fanaticism is getting boring but I'm still intrigued by the crazy of it. They are just so “out there” now. I'm sure J&K are going to need some help with housekeeping with that big house, if that happens, there's sure to be an outrage. Before I knew about the "outrageous freebies", I remember reading about car seats and I couldn't figure out why people would be interested in that. I never even noticed the fridge and when I caught it again, I forgot to look. I can't believe how they scour over J&K's personal belongings.

I remember the haters wanting J&K to be on Larry King, they have mentioned almost anyone with a talk / news show. They are so sure there's a story when there is none. I don't know why they don't want to believe that J&K do it by themselves with the nanny/helper they have mentioned. I'd get one more, there's always too much to do.

Ok, I know it's passive-aggressive of him, but I rewound 3 times just to watch Jon slap his legs and laugh at Kate when she said she loved telling men what to do. And the face he made at her was priceless. My daughter and I laughed so hard, it was priceless.
I am so waiting to see a change in her that would tell me that Jon finally let her have it about ridiculing him on T.V. I do like Kate except for those moments. Does she have any idea how good she has it with a husband like Jon? I think she takes him for granted.

Does anyone know why they are not showing the outside of the new house?

Saint said...

I have two rich sisters and a super-rich sister and they all use coupons. It's the upbringing, and, frankly common sense. As I've said before, "It's how the rich stay rich." They are generous to loved ones but not to supermarkets or department stores.

Saint said...

Do you think that was an odd coincidence or do you think that was deliberate editing?

I have no real idea, but I am very suspicious of the editing. It comes from my first impression of the show and certain family members on the show. I hadn't noticed gum chewing when I first saw the NC episode, but I wouldn't put it past the people who edit this program to put a little gum chewing in there just to make the show a bit more interesting!

I am not the only one who feels that Kate overreacted (to put it mildly) about the coupon. And, no it's not those at GWOP.

http://watching-tv.ew.com/2009/02/jon-kate-eight.html

PS my estimated cost of the fridge was not a number pulled out of the air - we just bought a similar fridge: total cost; 4569.17. It would be difficult to find a stainless fridge of that size for less. That is really not the point, though. Once again, I DON'T CARE if they have money. I think they earned it, and for better or worse they are now celebrities, and can/should spend their money how they please. I just hated how Kate acted like they would be going to the poorhouse because Jon forgot to use a coupon, and how she belittled him in the process.

MoreCowbell said...

I have never seen a twenty dollar coupon for a fifty dollar product!!

Lowes sends out coupons every once in while, $10 off the first $50, or $50 off your next $200 purchase. I always make sure to keep those because they're good, even if I'm not planning on remodeling anything at the time.

I think people who have always had money may not use coupons. They've never had to. But, people who remember what it's like to scrape and scrimp will use them no matter how much better their financial situation is now. It's actually a good habit to be into. She's spending wisely, not throwing away money she doesn't need to. I mean, they're using the same massaging shower head they got as a wedding present? Dude, you can afford to buy a BETTER ONE now!

As for "fridgegate," who gives a crap? If they have the money for a new fridge that will last them for years and years, get it. At least it's not one of those that Oprah gave away on her "Favorite Things" show last year with a flat panel HDTV and stereo system in the doors. If I had that in my kitchen, no one would ever leave the room. Food, TV and music all in one area and right in arm's reach! SCORE. I'd be tripping over everyone during football season.

The bottom line is that this NON-controversial fridge isn't exactly a stupid purchase. It's an investment. There are TEN PEOPLE living under one roof. Right now, they're little kids, but when they're teens and have adult appetites, how many groceries do you think the Gosselins will be going through? How many gallons of milk and OJ? How many pounds of hamburger? A holiday turkey is probably a normal mean for ten people. You need the room. And if this fridge cost THAT much, and is indeed a Sub Zero, it is going to last forever. Probably until all 8 kids have moved out and J&K can sell the house and buy a condo in Boca.

SamanthaNC said...

I just hated how Kate acted like they would be going to the poorhouse because Jon forgot to use a coupon

I dont think she implied not using the coupon was breaking the bank its just that they had a coupon and not using it it is literally like throwing money away. I feel the same way, I carry two coupon carries in my purse at all times, one for grocery/household items and one for Restaurants/shopping. I think that If I had millions in the bank I would still do that.

My husband's parents and grandparents are extremley wealthy and they save money every chance they get. Just recently my mother in law had a 31% off coupon that was only good on the 31st of Jan. (to use at our favorite bookstore for the newest book in a series that we LOVE and have been dying for the latest book to come out for over a year)- the book came out the first week of January and she waited til last Saturday so she could use her coupon.

The fact that someone has money to spare doesn't mean that they no longer care about being good stewards of that money- especially if they've seen hard times before.

Why does the “Kate Hate” link in the article Hannah posted bring you to this blog?

Lizabeth said...

Merryway, I was wondering the same thing. Seems like with all the publicity GWoP got (OMG CNN!!!) that it would stand to reason they would be mentioned for that link. *shrug* Whomever wrote the article must not read here since if they did they would find people defending the Gosselins against the nasty sites.

Nina Bell said...

That happened once before on an article written for the Reading Eagle. It actually brought quite a bit of traffic to our little blog. I think after reading a couple of posts people can figure it out for themselves.

Too Funny said...

So what. Maybe she did overreact about the coupon. But you know that if she didn't really use them, or say that she did, the first thing out of the haters mouths would be something like:

"Look at her just tossing money around like she's some millionaire. Kate, are you too good to use coupons like the rest of us? She tosses money around like it grows on trees when the rest of us can't buy certain things unless it's on sale or we have a coupon."

You KNOW it's true!!

I know someone who watches the show and likes it for the most part but often has a problem with Kate.

Anyway, last night she too commented about the coupon and, when I made to her the same comment I made above, she just looked at me a laughed. I said, "You would, wouldn't you?" (meaning, b*tch about her not using them and how she's tossing money around) And she says, "You're right. There's just something about her. I love to just hate her and don't really have any GOOD reasons why."

I have a feeling many of the haters feel this way too. They just aren't woman or man enough to be honest and say so. Instead they hide behind the typical, "I'm just an advocate for the kids." crap.

I thought the kids roaming around outside was really neat. I hope we see more of that.

I could care less if Kate uses coupons or not, but the way she talked to Jon about it was demeaning and belittling. I wait for the day that he stands up to her and says ENOUGH!

"Jon, what is the rule about receipts!" Geez!

SamanthaNC..."The fact that someone has money to spare doesn't mean that they no longer care about being good stewards of that money- especially if they've seen hard times before."

Samantha, this is how I see it too.

I think once you have lived through hard times, there is always a worry that you could end up in the same spot again.

Factor in that their family is 2x the size of an average one and I don't think her anxiety is unreasonable.

I think her anxiety about money is one of the main reasons we see her seemingly taking every speaking engagement or other opportunity that comes her way. I don't see her as someone who wants fame for fame's sake. It's a means to an end for her.

I won't defend how she spoke to Jon, but I don't need to. That's between them. And the funny thing is -- he didn't seem nearly as upset by the exchange as some of the harping ninnies on the hate blogs this morning.

Whatever, they watched and they are putting cash in J&K's pocket as they kvetch away....Funny.

Linda said...After the new episode they re-ran one of the NC Beach House episodes. It was interesting to me that they did a lot of close ups of the kids and Kate . . . . chewing gum. I hadn't noticed it before.

Do you think that was an odd coincidence or do you think that was deliberate editing?

That is interesting. I didn't see the re-run and I don't specifically remember.

Nothing would surprise me, however. TLC certainly replays Mady's episode aka "Gumgate" enough for me to think that they totally get that it gets people buzzing and that can only be good for the show.

Honestly, I had to laugh last night at all the posters on the hate blogs that were worrying about DVRing Larry King and watching last night's episode. It was like - how were they going to make all this work? LOL.

I caught the majority of the Larry King interview and did watch last night's episode, but I think my level of anticipation about the whole thing was about half that of the haters! Just bizarre.

Fiona,

Just to clarify, my "funny" remark had nothing to do with watching the J&K dynamics. It had to do with those who hate J&K and watch the show anyway and contribute to the buzz.

They are contributing as much $$$ to J&K's pocket as the true fans of the show are.

I agree with Kate's statement about coupons, "It's free money so why would you let it go to waste?!" I come from a middle class family, by no means rich, but my dad's job allowed my mother to quit when I was 4 and stay home with me. I really can't think of a time my Mom went to the grocery store and DIDN'T use a coupon, not that we couldn't afford to pay full price but why should she if she didn't need to? Perhaps if others were as adament about coupon clipping and smart shopping as Kate is they could afford the nicer things in life--big house, new fridge, etc.

Also, lets not forget the fact that Kate is a spokeswoman for coupon and other money saving programs. Lord can only imagine how much crap she's gotten from haters about how she shouldn't advocate saving money since she obviously has it coming out her ears! Well I suppose she's put that one to rest with her "fussing" about how "we never buy anything without a coupon!" I feel like Kate is "damned if she do damned if she don't!"

Secondly, correct me if I'm wrong and missed this--but we didn't see any of Cara and Mady last night did we? Perhaps this is one of the shows where they requested not to be filmed, or their parents felt like they needed a break. Especially Mady, IMO she has been showing signs of stress/anxiety with her comments about her siblings and parents.

I cracked up at little Joel, "I fall down everyday!" And the squabble over shoes, those kids are darn adorable!

Just to piggyback on what Saint said about wealthy peeps. I have a dear friend who is very rich. I house-sat for her for many years - taking care of her home and pets. Her family trust gives away several million dollars a year to charitable organizations locally.

She clips coupons, sends in for refunds and invested every dime she and her husband ever made. She is now a widow, settled into a much smaller home which costs more than J&K's and lives off of interest from her investments.

Talk to any truly wealthy person and ask them for advice. Being conservative with spending and wise with investments has allowed them to live the life they do.

Just my two cents.

About the coupons.... we rarely buy anything whether it's food, clothing, or toys without a coupon or it being on sale.

If we had a coupon for a shower head or whatever, and I bought it without using the coupon, my husband would have flipped his lid. I just don't see the problem with them still being frugal even though they have the new home. I think they're being smart.

SamanthaNC said...

I think some people actually believe that the whole thing is a coupon ruse. Everywhere they look is a J&K conspiracy!

After watching this episode a couple things really stood out to me.
First, Kate said during moving the little kids were "at a friend's house" I was wondering if they were with Beth
Second, they showed deliberate shots of Uncle Kevin and Beth. If they were really not around/ involved wouldn't they have wanted to choose different clips? I don't know it just seemed odd to me.

I knew the minute I saw the fridge that GWOP members would have meltdowns.

The kids were cute climbing on boxes & Joel "I fall everyday" was precious.

I didn't think "coupongate" (ha) was a big deal. My hubby & I use coupons for tons of stuff, and if he went & spent $50 on something that we had a $20 off coupon for, you bet I'd let him hear of it. In this economy, you can never be too careful with your money, no matter how much you have.

I LOL'd @ Kate's "Welcome". I do that kind of silly stuff all the time.

Boring, boring, boring. Too much packing, unpacking and furniture building.

Also, the whole, "the kids need room to not be clustered together all the time" thing is just ridiculous. At least for now. The 6 kids like playing together and for now I would guess they would continue to. I think as they grow up then they'll want more privacy and space, but frankly, I think they could have found that in their old home as well.

And another episode where Kate and or Jon has to scream because they couldn't find each other or some other family member. That's gonna get old soon.

Oh... and I've been MIA for a while. I've been watching the show, but I just had to take a time-out from internet Gosselin land. I'm back for the time being... pathetically, I'm afraid something really great will happen (the whole PM saga resolved?) in my absence.

I haven't actually commented on the episode yet, but I enjoyed it. Yeah, I am not that interested in seeing Jon put together a bed, but there are always enough cute kid moments that make it worthwhile. Most have already been cited. I guess I just enjoyed seeing the kids run free in all the space. They all had big grins (especially little Miss smiley Alexis). I think the house will seem less big once they get their furniture in it.

I have also got to give Jon props. Kate may not think he's good enough to loan himself out as a handyman, but I'd love to have someone like him around who can install a shower head, take apart and put together beds, etc.

I agree!

I sometimes really do wonder about the producers intentions. Watching the webisodes you see there are plenty of cute kid moments left on the cutting room floor, but they devote a chunk of time on Monday's episode to "Kate being Kate" (to quote my avatar LOL). I think we have to ask ourselves why?

Kate doesn't bother me the way she does some, but I think we could have cut that coupon scene down and squeezed in the footage from the webisode! Just my opinion....

I totally agree about the webisodes-- there are some adorable clips on there and its a shame the editors leave them out. At least those of us who take a look on the tlc site get a sweet little surprise though!

I can't stop laughing at Leah saying "Who pooped in it?" She was so serious and yet Jon was so focused on the task at hand (like a typical guy) that I don't know if he even noticed. Just awesome though-- I'm sure if Jon and Kate see the clip they will die laughing.

No one is giving you instructions on how to post. I'm expressing MY opinion. I do not believe that you always write your posts with respect or honesty. When you write something like this:

I have been on the fence about this show for the last few months. I want to watch the show but when I do it is nothing but a "yellingfest".

Do those two have to yell so much. First, it was Jon yelling at the kids about the boxes, and then Kate yelling at Jon about the coupon.

I think instead of watching the show this Monday I will start a fight with my husband over something as trivial as a rebate check for our broom.

Nina Bell said...

Let us know how that works for you.

I am so happy to see that the kids will have lots of room to run and play, inside and out. This may eliminate the need for Kate to snap at them so often for being under her feet. The house is beautiful and the grounds are beautiful as we can see from the arial shot on another site.

But seriously, does anybody want to watch a man degrade and humiliate his wife on camera for all to see? No, I think we'd all be having 50 fits if that was the case. So why, oh, why is it entertaining for us to see Kate emasculating Jon every single episode? I find it humiliating and embarassing.

If my husband and I have something to say to one another, and we have five children, we do it in the privacy of our own room or in the car without the kids or whatever. I noticed that Alexis was hearing every word of that coupon tirade. What must the kids think, that men and boys are not only icky and gross, but doormats and just not too bright? That's not good.

Emma77 said...

I don't post her often, but I do frequently read.

I think the house is beautiful, I noticed the fridge but wasn't too overly concerned. I agree that most people I know (including weathly ones) use coupons. True, I think Kate could always speak a little kinder to Jon.

What concerns me....and there is not a thing I can do about it--is the supervision of the children. It would make me extremely nervous having that many little ones running around unsupervised. Now, to be fair, I don't know if the kids are not 100% unsupervised, but the comment Kate made in the last episode about not knowing where anyone was and she enjoyed that concerned me.

Is this too off topic, or can I ask....am I just too paranoid a mom? I only have two year old twins so I guess I don't know what my supervision of them would be like when they are almost five, but I still don't think I would be comfortable with too much freedom at that age.

But maybe I am overly paranoid. And I guess we don't really know how much the kids are being supervised, but that was my first concern.

marci said...

Emma,

I don't think you're paranoid...at least not any more paranoid than I would be. :)

I thought the same thing about the kids being somewhat unsupervised before everyone was sure there weren't any hidden dangers in a new house...but, like you said, it's hard to tell just how unsupervised they were.

Nina Bell said...

Emma77

I had some of the same thoughts when I first saw the house and the property. How will they every keep track of the kids.

But then I thought back to when I grew up. We had very big farm homes on large lawns with lots of acres and big families. There were some of our neighbors and fellow farmers that had 14,15 and even one with 18 children. Somehow my mother always knew where we were and what we were up to. I am not sure how she did that. I had my hands full with two.

Saint said...

Nicole,
If we argue, we do it behind closed doors (mostly) too. I think the fact that they show us their fights is shocking at first to many viewers. They argue at home themselves, but they'd never do it with an audience.

It is part of what the show is, though. They aren't pretending. They've decided to allow the cameras there, so the cameras "catch" an argument, which, technically was in their home, not in public. (I didn't see it...I missed this episode.) Jon and Kate have both said that they always resolve their differences...always. Why don't we see that? Maybe because they don't film all the time? Maybe it didn't get past editors? So I watch for the other parts of the show: the kids, the great marriage moments, the activities they do, and secretly...to see what might provoke the most comments in blog world.

As for kids seeing parents argue...it happens. No, it's probably not what should happen, but it happens all over this country. The Gosselins, in this respect, are normal.

I am not big on discipling other people's children but when the kids were climbing on those boxes in the basement, does anyone think that instead of filming them, the crew should have re-directed them elsewhere to play instead of filming it? The crew are not strangers and they could have either been hurt or broken things in the boxes. They did end up in trouble for doing it anyway.

I don't know if this is comparable, but I watch a behind the scenes of Real World and it was said that production does not interfere with what is going on on cameras. The only time they had ever interfered was when a cast member drove intoxicated. The kids playing on the boxes was cute. And I do agree, I wouldn't feel okay with disciplining someone else's kid.

Interesting. I guess I hadn't given it much thought. I didn't consider walking on the boxes super dangerous. In hindsight, I could see a kid toppling over, but they would be hitting carpet at least. It's even possible the crew did tell them to knock it off at some point (hadn't they stopped by the time Jon came down?). Tiger's explanation is also possible.

I know I shouldn't think so either, but the walking on the boxes was so cute and using the little hammer thing to get them to look like they hadn't been doing what they were doing was even cuter.

MrsRef said...

I didn't think it was overly dangerous either and the part where they tryed to fix the boxes was cute. I just wonder if there is a point where the crew would intercede before someone gets hurt or would they just continue filming. I was and still am overly protective I suppose. I felt bad that Alexis (I think) got in trouble for the whole thing.

Lord....how many people move into a new house and leave it EXACTLY the way they bought it.

If they bought a new fridge WHO CARES? If they buy 10 fridges and 90 washers & dryers its none of anyone's business.

They're making money. They can afford it. Not everyone is going to be destitute because we're in a down economy. It's precisely because Kate and Jon are cheap and do use coupons that likely have a nice little nest egg for themselves.

They could probably afford to buy all new furniture for the house 3x over. Plus, if they really wanted it, I'm sure they could negotiate with TLC for free stuff.

That's the way it is and, at this point, I'm sure Kate and Jon laugh their behinds off at all of the wackos on the internet carefully observing what items are in the home from week to week.

It's really pathetic if you ask me...

lindalou said...

Oh, my. If anyone thinks that Jon and Kate were able to buy a million dollar estate and a condo in Park City because they are frugal and clip coupons needs to think about the logic of this. These are not the actions of frugal people. Likewise the spa trips, the skiing, the Botox, the Coach purse, the nanny and house staff, and the nice vacations. Jon and Kate have money for these activities because they have 8 kids that they have put on TV for public entertainment. You and I with our 2.5 kids could clip coupons until we turn blue and wouldn't end up in an estate with a pool and stables. Jon and Kate are laughing for sure. They're laughing at the people who buy their scam. Well, we'll see how Nadya Suleman drama plays out in the public arena. Public attention is easily won and quickly lost.

I dont think anyone here thinks that Jon and Kate were able to purchase their new home bc they clip coupons- we are well aware that the show has changed their financial situation and not the fact that they saved .25 on organic peanut butter.

nomoredrama said...

LOL Lindalou! I'm well aware that they purchased the house through proceeds from their show, speaking events, endorsement deals, media junkets, book sales and complimentary trips to "hither, thither and yon."

"they would have never had the money if it wasn't for the 8 kids"

Yep. And?

I'm sorry to be short but I'm never going to get why a bunch of women on the internet think it's their God given right to critique every action under the guise of "well, they put themselves out there"

Why spend your Monday nights being angry because someone bought a new refrigerator? Does it add days to your life? Do you (collective you) sleep better knowing that you "spoke up" against the injustice of the trip to the spa or the vacation in Utah that someone else took?

Like I said, I don't get it. I probably never will. If you want something to be angry about, be angry at the fact that several prominent politicians were discovered to be tax cheats. One of which was just confirmed by the senate to be secretary of the treasury. Get angry at the fact that 78 billion dollars in tarp funds given to the banks is unaccounted for. Shake your fist at the unemployment rate in the country. These are things that actually affect the lives of you and your family.

Where the Gosselins go on vacation and what they buy...not so much.

Guinevere said...

Oh, my. If anyone thinks that Jon and Kate were able to buy a million dollar estate and a condo in Park City because they are frugal and clip coupons needs to think about the logic of this. These are not the actions of frugal people.

I think *your* logic is lacking; your first statement seems to have little to do with your second one.

No one has said that the Gosselins were able to buy their PA home and possibly imaginary condo because they clipped coupons. Your reading comprehension skills need some work. All that's been said is that the Gosselins can be both wealthy and still frugal in some things (e.g. clipping coupons).

Likewise the spa trips, the skiing, the Botox, the Coach purse, the nanny and house staff, and the nice vacations.

Well, spa trips and nanny I'll give you. Though the hater mantra is that J&K don't pay for these, so you might want to get with the program. Plenty of upper-middle class people have nannies and go to spas, as well as take nice vacations (conventional wisdom is that the vacations are paid for as well, with a bit more evidence for this one - they are part of the show). Botox and house staff is speculation and/or made-up. All I know about Coach purses is that some women do own them, yes; and not just the super-rich. I would never spend that much on a purse myself, but whatever. Maybe she got it at an outlet store.

Jon and Kate have money for these activities because they have 8 kids that they have put on TV for public entertainment. You and I with our 2.5 kids could clip coupons until we turn blue and wouldn't end up in an estate with a pool and stables.

No one said we would. Only an idiot would think that.

Jon and Kate are laughing for sure. They're laughing at the people who buy their scam.

Wow, such bitterness towards total strangers. That's really not good for your health.

LOL, NMD...People are entitled to spend their discretionary income as they see fit.

I wouldn't spend that much on a handbag, but others would NOT spend as much as I do on skincare products (Ponds probably works just as well) or buying books (you can go to the library).

I think there is just as much perceived anger against the "haters" here as there is towards J&K by the perceived haters at other sites. Nobody can really know how much anger and jealously someone has because of a few posts they make on the internet. Go ahead and insult a poster but it doesn't really help your argument.

THe real world will always be much more important that what happens on J&K, for the "lovers" as well as the "haters". It's an escape for most of us, isn't it?

I think there is some anger, but I wouldn't say "just as much". When you get to the worst of the worst of the haters, you are talking about women who perceive something unwholesome about Hannah sitting in Jon's lap, women who compare Kate to a child murderer, women who laugh at the idea of Kate being hurt or killed. Women who have bragged in the past about calling CPS in an effort to get th Gosselins' children taken from them. Those examples are just the tip of the hate iceberg. I don't think anything here even comes close to that level of vitriol. Yes, there is some hostility here, but I don't see it as comparable.

I agree, but I think we all judge each other by what we are putting out there. I know some anti-Gosselinites don't like to be called jealous, but if you look at the substance of *some* of the anti-Gosselin posts, they sure look like jealousy. Constant complaints about what the Gosselins have, what the posters don't have, the "freebies", etc. - yes, I think to a reasonable person such comments are perceived as arising from jealousy, at least in part.

I think for some people hating the Gosselins is just sort of a hobby (a weird one, to my mind, but whatever). But calling CPS, contacting sponsors over and over, watching the show obsessively so that you can find little things to pick on - when people admit themselves that they do these things, yes, they create an impression. and not a pretty one, in other peoples' minds of their personalities and characters.

Go ahead and insult a poster but it doesn't really help your argument.

I'm not sure anyone is really convincing anyone of anything at this point, anyway. But I do think sometimes things are unfairly perceived as being insulting. If I call you a crazy cat lady, I'm insulting you (charges of being a ccl seem to fly all over the Gosselin blogosphere). If I say that your comments seem to indicate that you're jealous of the Gosselins, or that your claims about the Gosselins are without substance (i.e. you are not giving any evidence - just stating an opinion as fact), am I insulting you? If I call you a "hater", because I've seen enough of your posts (when I say "you" here, I'm speaking of the general "you", not you specifically, Rain) to believe that you really hate the Gosselins, am I being insulting?

I don't know that I feel insulted when I'm told that I worship the Gosselins. I suppose it could be the poster's incorrect interpretation of my defense of the Gosselins. Or the poster could be trying to bug me. Either way, it's pretty weak and borderline to me.

OTOH, I've seen it suggested many times at GWOP that Gosselin defenders are stupid, lower-class, less educated and just generally of a lower socio-economic status than the GWoPpers themselves are. Now THAT is obviously insulting. It does not offend me personally, because I certainly don't internalize any of those specific criticisms, but it's clearly meant to insult.

THe real world will always be much more important that what happens on J&K, for the "lovers" as well as the "haters". It's an escape for most of us, isn't it?

For me, it is. It's entertainment that only occasionally gets me riled up. For the "child advocates", ostensibly, it's something different, but who really knows?
