I'm curious...is the "unique" place the G's are going the Franklin Museum in Philadelphia? Any locals know?

I went to the Franklin as a kid and it WAS amazing. If that's where they're shown going, I'm sure it was a blast.

Should be interesting to see how they leave off tonight. I don't think they've ever done an official season finale before.

Plus, I wonder what they'll start off with for the next season in May. Kate's schedule is pretty busy for the next few months, so I'm curious to see how they do filming. Probably stuff they're filming now will air in May??

Marci,

I read that at one of Kate's speaking engagements over the weekend she mentioned that they already had several episodes filmed for the upcoming season.

JerseyGirl said...

Marci-I think they went to the Please Touch Museum, its a cute place. My kids like the Franklin Institute too, we are scheduled to go there with Cub Scouts soon.

I am excited for these episodes-- the Globetrotters would be amazing to watch, and the museum sounds like a bigger version of the one Jon took Joel to for his special day. Should also be interesting to see what changes are being made now that Jon and Kate are producers-- already we have seen some really positive shifts (the entire month of December off of filming, having the cameras out of bedrooms, etc) so I hope the privacy and family unity continues.

Thanks, Nina & Jersey Girl, for the info!

I'm interested to see how them being producers affects the shows as well, particularly how the show ideas and filming restrictions (where and how they film the kids) may vary.

I also wonder if they're committed to film a certain number of shows per season, and if that number will change...like there might not be a new one almost every week for 10 months like Season 4.

i certainly hope that tonight we are going to hear that season 5 will be many fewer episodes.

I posted on that other site and my comments were not published. I commented on the rude, adult (I said I assume they are adults) behavior and name calling that was in regards to the b-ball show tonight. J&K were called leeches, Kate, "clown car belly", and evil morons. I have been reading that site for the last 3-4 weeks and the comments are just getting more rude and more rabid. It is like J&K are the bait being hung over the side of the boat for the sharks. It is like a blogging frenzy. My comments also stated that they aren't in their household 24/7 and that we only see snippets of their lives together and those snippets are not flattering but to get TLC ratings. I think fame and celebreality has cost Jon and Kate alot and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight w/Kate's books coming out in the next 2 months. Hopefully when the last season is done they can get back to a resemblance of "normal life", though their lives will never be normal again. Thank you.

Marci: How long ago did you go to the Franklin Institute. I am 50 and went there as a kid and took my kids also. I am sure some of the exhibits from when I was a kid are sooooooooooo obsolete now. They still have the heart as my nieces had their picture taken there. Never been to the Please Touch Museum but they have a monorail that was in Wanamakers when I was a kid there. It went around the toy department. I was fortunate enough to take my kids there too before they took it down. Anyone else remember it?

marci said...

Mrs. Ref,

Oh, it's been about 30 years, LOL! I'm 40, so my memories of it are a little vague. I just remember it was a blast.

My mom grew up outside Philadelphia and when we went to visit my grandparents there we'd take the trolley into Philly and do the rounds...Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Chinatown, Betsy Ross's house, Ben Franklin's house, Franklin Museum....you name it.

They still have the heart you can walk through? I have to say, that was cool enough to keep all these years.

The Franklin has the full-size trains in the museum too, right? I seem to remember that. That, and the giant pendulum that swings with the earth's movement and the big electrified ball that makes your hair stand up when you touch it. :)

The Franklin's been around a while, I guess. My mom is 70 and I think she went there as a kid herself, or at least as a teen.

I wont be able to watch these episodes until later. Wonder what the big announcement is going to be.

Lizzy said...

I'll just do this in two installments for the two episodes :)

Globetrotters episode:

First thing I noticed was that they were sitting close together in the interview section. Jon confirmed that he was helping his mom when her husband was out of town. They also confirmed that they have a helper. Its great they respect her and her privacy that she chose enough to keep herself off camera.

It is interesting to hear Kate talk about how she feels now that the kids are growing up-- from what I have seen with families that is normal when kids begin to get older and more independent. I enjoyed watching Kate shop since her OCD tendencies would, I assume, make it really tough to pick things out. She laughed at herself and her bad fashion choices in the past, too.

SO cute to see Leah describing how she got ready-- got her hair washed and then rinsed it, etc. It was also funny how Kate refused to let Hannah have her hair cut and then the barber refused as well. Hannah's hair is so gorgeous that I am not surprised!

The fact that the Globetrotters are big fans was really sweet--- the kids looked like they really enjoyed the show, especially with Cara getting to do a trick with them. The little girls running up to her when she went back to her seat was so great as well. Watching them feel the guys muscles was hilarious too! Makes me want to go to a globetrotters game just for the family atmosphere.

Museum Episode:

Interesting that the chair is really difficult to sit in and so that could contribute to how they sit-- I can see how that could be an issue. Painting looked like so much fun-- I love doing art projects with kids. Leah saying "His eyes are scary" to the painted leopard was just adorable, as was all the kids being covered in paint and Aaden asking for a paper towel over and over. The paintings were great though-- I love the techniques as well, and how Kate chose the colors to match in the house so she would have artwork from the kids all over.

The museum looked like so much fun, too-- in a way I was glad that Jon acknowledged being gone for 8 days and how it was tough for him to miss out on these things with the kids. He got a bit of a taste of how Kate feels when she is away for work, which seemed to make him see things a bit differently. Leah listing the kinds of beans in her shopping cart was adorable though!!

Kate's saying of "You get what you get and you don't..." then the kids echo with "get upset" was really good-- its like what Jon talked about when feeding the kids, how they need to learn how to be content with what they are given. Every family could benefit from that kind of attitude-- I know my mom would make a separate dinner for my brothers sometimes and it was something she did out of love, but that was something she now wishes she had not done (since my youngest brother now lives on cheeseburgers, chocolate covered donuts, and energy drinks).

Kate mentioned that just because they have 8 kids they do not want their kids to miss out on the things that are around them. I can only imagine the pressure Jon and Kate feel being in the public eye (which is similar to the pressure lots of celebrities have but still. It has to be tough.

Kate said the past year has had a lot of changes, and they think they are ready for Season 5 as well as that she absolutely loves her job and what she wants to do. Jon responded that he is having a conflict with working from home, but that he is happy the show is possible. He talked about how its hard having others see his life as episodes when for him its a day on the calendar. Jon said he hasn't come to grips with it, and Kate agreed then said they are at an odd place since you can't go back to before the show at this point. That is a really valid point I hadn't thought of before-- they really have nothing they can do about the fact that the show has happened and is this popular... they just have to deal with it.

In the end, Jon said it (the show and the fame) is really difficult for him, then Kate said she is really happy now, so they are going to take the break between Seasons and see what happens.

Anonymous said...

I'll admit it....I actually began to cry at the end of this episode. Wow

Anonymous said...

I am just frustrated. They confirm the "helper" and I don't blame her for not wanting to be recognized. But Kate is shopping for kids and then goes to "her store" (hello...Ann Taylor right?).

I am just a little frustrated that Lizabeth doesn't mention these comments. Just what is cute.

I realize everyone can take whatever they want from the show. But I felt like hers was a bit of a recap but there was no recap on the shopping part.

OMG--is that a shot of Jon blatantly shopping for All State insurance?

I know I sound like someone from over there--but I can't help it. It's just so scripted.

I will watch the second show but I do think I'm done with this since it's the end of the season.

I miss Kate shopping for the family while running home for a sitter, etc. family helping to organize the garage.

Fine--circumstances are different for them now. The show is different. so I'm different about it too and am done. Good luck gosselins.

Can't they just go to a show and sit in the stands? Why does everything have to be first class? Couldn't Kate or Jon say to the hosts, thanks but we'd like to be in with the crowd? The experience would be fun?

I'll check in from time to time for the other topics.

Lizzy said...

CincyMom, I didn't mention the shopping because I wasn't really paying attention to that part of the episode. Honestly, I've got a few things going on here and besides the end of the second episode I was back and forth between watching and, well, getting things done.

Sorry you are not happy with that, but I just wrote the things that stood out to me from the parts I watched. That is all. It was not meant to be a slight to others who were looking to see something different, just my perspective.

Anonymous said...

I know, maybe it's just my frustration. But if others get annoyed too, maybe we could still visit with eachother and rename the site "Former watchers of the Gosselin show."

Ha!

I would miss you all.

Anya@IW said...

Well, I always appreciate Liza Beth's recaps. I always read them before I watch the show and pay extra attention to some of the things she highlights.

I tried to write a recap once for this blog and after a half-hour spent on the first 5 minutes of the episode (I am way too wordy), I realized I wasn't the best person for this.

No offense meant to you, CincyMom. I just want to point out that unless you do an 11 page recap (ala TWoP), you are going to leave some stuff out. I don't watch the show to get annoyed, so I'd personally prefer to hear about the cute moments. Product placement tends to go over my head anyway, so I'd just assume not see it mentioned in the recaps.

Nina Bell said...

CincyMom

I usually don't watch the show until the following weekend so I can't really comment on the show. I enjoy your company though and hope you stick around for our other topics.

Anonymous said...

OK--I guess my comments got crossed with Lizabeth's recap sortof of the second show tonight.

For me, it was, whatever, like a home movie. Not bad. not good just whatever.

At the end was the interesting stuff. I found it odd, they usually show a show but out of nowhere started questioning J&K about the show. Never heard them talk so candidly before.

He seems to have a lot of conflict. And we know Mady and Cara have expressed some views. There's definitely some drawbacks. And it's not an easy summary, but I'm annoyed by Kate's "I'm good with it all" attitude. You protect your spouse first. If he has a problem, which apparently she knew, that should be discussed first. Their relationship should come before the show.

Maybe their combined choice would be to continue, but to continue to be on display while debating is just letting us dissect everything. And then our comments eventually get to them, and them (maybe, or through media) and then that hurts.

It sounds like they may have filmed episodes for the next season. Jon even mentioned them, but now it sounds up in the air.

I just hope they are happy with their choices and I will be happy with mine.

Theresa said...

I enjoyed these episodes. The kids are happy...their mom & dad are happy.

That promo looks really ridiculous now, doesn't it? Hype. That's all TLC wanted. They got it. Ratings ploy.

CincyMom, hope you stick around. To tell you the truth, I felt a bit frustrated too. But, my frustration is more that I am tired of all the analyzation of this family and all the rumors that are spread only to find in the next episode, they are not true. I started feeling this way when that promo first aired. I could tell it was obviously made to look like something was "bad" only for a draw of viewers for the finale. Typical ratings ploy. But, everyone (on other blogs)jumped on it and out came the claws.

I agree, I think when the family hears of the crap that's said about them, it hurts them. I personally don't like seeing the snark and worse on Kate (if you don't like her, you don't like her. You don't have call her names, make up rumors, etc. Of course, by "you" I mean the haters, not you personally CincyMom. (Shout out to gwop.) I also think it's funny how all our words on this blog are picked up on other blogs and we are being ripped apart. (Shout out to the pigs.) Oh well, at least they know how to read. Or, do they?

I decided to read what I want, and let other stuff just slide off. People want to be nasty, that's a serious problem of theirs that they need to work on themselves.

The end of this episode was very sad to me. I'm glad that they vaguely mentioned the pictures and rumors.

What was most sad to me was to listen to how lost Jon feels. I wonder if it is that Kate gets to be paid to do things with her kids. She sees herself as working from home. Jon, who seems to be doing more of the at-home caregiving, is a little lost.

He reminds me of how lost I felt when I left the working world to care for my kids full-time. I felt lost too. I felt like my world got smaller even though I made a big effort to do a lot with my kids outside the home. I felt as if I lost some of my identity and that I was seen as "So and so's wife" and "Blank and Blank's Mom."

Anonymous said...

Linda, you summed it up to me simply.

It was sad.

merryway said...

Oh the kids were cute again. They were so well-behaved in these episodes. I liked seeing the family at the Globetrotter game. My boys saw them years ago when Sinbad was with them. The J&K clan all seemed to have a great time. I thought Joel asking about the bad guys the globetrotters were playing was adorable. They all seemed to love the meet and greet and I think it's telling one of them wanted their pic w/J&K. I think it's kind of fun when we see the things on the show that we have already talked about on the blog. It was interesting to know how it went for the Oprah show, that they were supposed to travel and then did it via sattelight. I hadn't thought about the kids not being able to understand how they're being broadcast vs being in a studio. I liked watching Kate shop for the kids and herself.

I loved the artwork they did and the museum they went to w/Kate was was fun. How funny was it that her voice came booming out all over the museum because of her mic? I thought it was a great idea for Kate to hang the artwork in the house and I liked how they showed them to us while they were on the couch. Kate seemed so relaxed and I don't remember any bickering. I do wish Jon would take more on the couch. I thought it was sweet that he was sad he missed going to the museum with the kids. He mentioned several things that the kids told him. It sounded like a weird explanation when he was talking about taking care of his mom because her “husband went away”. It makes him sound like he evaporated or just left her. I think it was for the sake of privacy but it came off weird. It was sad to see Jon having a hard time dealing w/fame (what it's all been building to), but it's to be expected w/how well-known they've become. Kate was clear when they said they can't go backwards. They talked a bit about how many changes happened the last year. We've been watching and talking about it all and it's been a lot. It's nice to know Kate loves how their life is going. I hope they find a good balance for both of them.

I wonder if the big build up was going to be if there was going to be another season. However, it has already slipped out about the filming. TLC didn't really have a cliff-hanger so it seems they just made it all up to go w/the rumors.

I liked both of the episodes. I thought the editing was a little strange of the second one w/the buildup comments stuck in, but I have enjoyed all the last few episodes I watched. Mostly just because I like watching the family.

I like Elizabeth's replays, it's interesting to see what others notice vs what I see.

Cincymom, sorry you're frustrated. I hope you hang around. I just laughed at the Allstate commercial, it was so blatant.

Anonymous said...

Theresa--Jon didn't sound too happy to me. And I don't remember when the four and 8 year olds were last interviewed on their preference. Just my opinion.

Kate sure seemed happy, though.

Anonymous said...

Merryway--thanks for wanting me to stay around. The Allstate ad during a show made me want to pound my face in the ground. I can't enjoy anything with such blatant advertising.

But I promise all, I won't keep bugging if that's happening. I haven't had so much beef to write about before. I feel both last shows were so odd. I felt a disconnect from watching the cute shows and people.

And I know Guinevere says if you don't like it don't watch (which I get). But I DO feel like I've watched a different show and now it's all switched up.

merryway said...

I do wish Jon would take more on the couch.

Sorry, I meant

I wish Jon would talk more on the couch.

CincyMom, I never watch the show anymore, I come to this blog because there's so much more.
And I'm sure you could add your observations to any recap, I find your posts interesting.
I think if you decide to stop watching though you'll find it intriguing to get everybody's take on each episode, all the differing opinions. I enjoy it.
And then if you do read some of the other blogs too, it will amaze you how people can watch the exact same thing and then write as if they've seen two totally different shows. I don't go to other sites that often though, I just can't take too much of the negative, life throws enough negativity my way sometimes, I don't need to borrow more.

I hope nobody takes offense here, I just realized I sound like I'm talking about lab rats. Human nature is fascinating though.

I loved both episodes. I noticed product placement, but I am an expert now b/c of this blog, so I didn't mind. I LOVED how cute the kids were...especially the little girls' hair which I suspect (but do not know) is done by TLC help, b/c Kate usually does your average pony tails. I enjoyed Kate's very good attitude through both episodes, and if there was whining, I didn't see it.

CincyMom, I hadn't thought about this until you made the point so clearly: You protect your spouse first. If he has a problem, which apparently she knew, that should be discussed first. Their relationship should come before the show.

I appreciate this.

I've always loved the Globetrotters, and I'm old enough to remember the Harlem Globetrotter's Saturday morning cartoon (in the 70's, thank you). They drove around in a red, white and blue bus, solving crimes and cracking jokes, just like the Scooby Doo gang! LOL.

The Globetrotter and the museum episodes were freaking adorable to watch. I'm not even in the mood to over-analyze every word out of Jon or Kate's mouth, like the obsessive, bitter, advocates do. I just enjoyed the shows tonight. I think Jon's frustration is because of the blown-out-of-proportion-non-controversy. Yeah, you can't even go out for a beer, Jon, and that IS sad, but it's part of the deal. Just be glad you're not Michael Phelps.

Unfortunately, what shouldn't be part of the deal is the harassment and name calling that goes on with the hatemongers. I wonder if the family on "Table for 12" going to be judged as harshly as the Gosselin's have?

That's a rhetorical question, by the way. We all know the answer to that.

I’ve barely noticed the product placement on this show previously but it was so jarring this episode. I didn’t have any idea the name of the clothing store Kate was raving about so I’m not sure that product placement worked for everyone. I also wish they’d give us a hint that Mady isn’t being as unfairly treated as they convey on the show. As a twin, I know how upset I would have been if my sister had the opportunity to be out on the floor with the Globetrotters and I didn’t. It may be that Mady gets as many perks as Cara but they all happen off camera. I wish they’d make some comment about it so viewers like me don’t feel so bad for her. The kids are still adorable but my feeling of being manipulated is gaining momentum.

Anonymous said...

OhioMom53: Amen! I totally agree with you...and even tried to post the same type of comment on GWOP. Denied. So weird.

Anonymous said...

Ok people, please help me realize that it isnt as bad as it seems. I have always thought the laters on GWOP are over exagerating everything but this finale episode really upset me. Specially the following:

1) Product placement, you think they could be more subtle. That allstate thing was so forced, I hated it.

2) Jon stating how hard the show is for him, Kate talking about how hard it is for Jon but neither of them mention what effect this show may have on the kids

3) Kate wrapping up with "But I'm loving it" right after Jon says how hard it is for him. What a bitch! I am sorry, I have liked Kate and although I realize she has a "special" personality I think this was too much.

I love this show, I hate feeling this way but it was just too much.

Anya@IW said...

Anya said...Product placement tends to go over my head anyway, so I'd just assume not see it mentioned in the recaps.

Ok, after watching the show, I have to say I was wrong and CincyMom was right!

Product placement *does* frequently go over my head, but in the case of the Allstate bit, no such luck. It kind of bordered on obnoxious, to be truthful.

I have only watched the first episode, but I liked it. The Globetrotters seemed like really nice guys. I enjoyed seeing the kids feed the dogs. The sextuplets (especially Leah) are speaking so maturely.

Theresa said...

They way they did the Allstate placement was indeed awkward. It didn't need to be within the show like that.

I think for Allstate, TLC should've put Allstate's logo on after the show open, with a voiceover guy saying "brought to you by All State". They could do a 15 second promo/commercial in between, too.

Anonymous said...

I agree that the Allstate thing was a little too much, but I literally laughed out loud knowing that heads were exploding all across the country(at least 5-10 of them, anyway). Other than that, I thought it was pretty cute. I felt bad for Jon, but I don't think that they will do the next season in spite of him being uncomfortable with it just because Kate wants to. After all, it is a job that pays, and the perks may outweigh the drawbacks for him.

Weed said...

I watched both episodes – I enjoyed them. The more shows with the children the better. I felt sorry for Jon – I think he feels left out. Kate has her speaking engagements and book signing and he’s home with the children – I think he feels that he’s not the “Man” anymore – not providing for his family. The male ego is very fragile and I think that’s the part he’s having a hard time with. I am a bit frustrated with Kate though – you could clearly see that Jon is not happy and she is over-joyed with her career and how their life is going but in a marriage, I don’t know who said it up-thread, but you have to think of your spouse first. All well and good for Kate that she’s happy beyond belief – but what about her spouse – what about his happiness. I really think she needs to step back and see what this is doing to the family as a whole, are they strong enough to survive this? Is there anything she can do to cut back, make Jon and herself happy at the same time??
I just felt bad for him and yes – you could say he needs to suck it up, that she’s providing for his family but a marriage is a partnership, you have to work together for the good of the family and I truly think Kate is pushing Jon’s feelings aside and as long as she’s happy and getting what she wants out of it, to bad for him. Remember, this is just my opinion – please don’t rip me a new one!!

Here is an article out about last night's shows.

http://blog.zap2it.com/ithappenedlastnight/2009/03/jon-kate-plus-8-finale-doesnt-address-divorce-rumors.html

It posed these two questions:

"What do you think? Did the finale answer any questions? Do you want a fifth season or should they just stop while their marriage is still intact?"

Kikibee said...

I enjoyed these episodes. I think the kids are getting even cuter now that they are talking more. Their personalities are really coming out. And, Kate is more relaxed with them since they don't need as much supervision.

I agree, merryway, it sounded odd when Jon said his mother broke her foot and her husband "went away".
Did he "leave" leave, or just go on a business trip or something?
I know it's none of our business, but that sounded awkward.

I'm not feeling much sympathy for Jon. He sounded perfectly happy when he was in Utah, skiing with Cara, and looking at condos. He's just upset that he got caught doing something "inappropriate".

And I'm pretty sure Jon could get a job or go back to school if he wanted. The little ones will be in school full time next year, and
invisi-helper could probably take care of them after school.

Surely by this time they could afford to stop the show or cut down the number of episodes if they want to. Their ratings are good enough that I think TLC would work out whatever arrangements J&K want.

Eileen said...

I shouldn't weigh in because I didn't even watch, but I like the idea of product placement. I always said to my husband why can't TV shows just cut out all commercials and some how work those sponsors into the show? Drive a certain type car, eat a certain cereal, use a certain perfume, etc., Don't make it overly obvious, don't do a commercial within the show, don't say anything about the product really, just use the products on the show. I really like that idea.

I read here often, but do not post often. Cincymom, I enjoy your comments, hope you stay. (I am also a Cincy mom) You said you wished they would sit in the stands like everyone else...I think they are past that point. The are now celebrities and would not be able to enjoy any show in a normal setting. In NY and LA, people are used to seeing celeb types walking down the street. We are not used to it here in the mid west...I am sure it draws to much attention and could compromise the kids safety.

Loved both episodes. They are wow--so different from the beginning (J&K).

Have to say after watching Table for 12 and having to turn it off after glitter-gate, I have a new found appreciation for Kate and her brood.

She may be bossy, picky, controlling--whatever adjective you like. But she has the most behaved children.

I love her "You get what you get, you don't get upset" So using that with my kids.

Table for 12 can--disappear for all I care.

But if J&K stick around I will happily enjoy them.

I have to say, I knew the shopping trip was going to be a big deal on the boards today (not these ones, just in general). Really though, why? Kate shopped at Ann Taylor or Banana Republic or whatever that store was. It's not like she was shopping at some upscale boutique. She shopped at a regular store. And even if she did shop at some upscale store...get over it. She's allowed. I just knew the fact that she was shopping was going to raise all sorts of hell. And I don't get it.

I watched the episodes last night and saw a happy, healthy, fit mom with energetic and adorable children. I see two parents who are trying to be very honest. I liked that a lot. Jon and Kate seem to be disagreeing over the next season, and that's honest and realistic. Good for them for showing it. I can't help but wonder if people don't get their senses of humor and misinterpret them. Jon and Kate clearly have very dry and sarcastic senses of humor, and I personally find them to be quite funny in a subtle way. Sarcasm is not to be taken literally though, and I wonder if the people who do take them literally are the ones who are the biggest haters who clearly need to lighten up.

Anonymous said...

I thought the last two shows were good. Good to see Kate and Jon talking to one another during the couch interviews and good to see them laughing a little more.

As for the AllState ad, well, when they try to slip product placements in an not make such a big deal out of it, people complain about them being "sneaky." So now that they don't try and hide the fact that it's a product placement ad, they still get h*ll for it. I don't get it. It's an ad. Big deal. Without such things there would be no TV.

As for the supposed shocker at the end, what they showed was exactly what I thought they would. Which was basically a repeat of what Jon and Kate said in a recent article. That she is doing well with it all and he isn't. I think they'll be fine. Jon just needs to find something to do.

Anyway, can't wait until the show comes back on.

I taped both episodes and will watch closely tonight. I did, however, see snippets and what little I saw I do have a couple of comments. I think the 5th season will be televised in May and that Jon will not be involved as much and that Kate will be the "star" so to speak. I caught her saying that it is much easier to take the 8 on outings now that they are almost 5. Plus I read that Oprah was mentioned alot so I think that after Season 5 Oprah will produce some sort of talk show with Kate. The snippets I saw the tups are so cute, poor Aaden, had yellow paint on his face... I love how they chit chat with each other. I still feel that the dogs are guard dogs and have little interaction w/the kids. I think the interaction is just for the t.v. cameras. This couple has had a lot of changes in their lives in such a few short years, and are not dealing w/the changes together but apart. I still try to see the good in Kate but I think she has been wooed by the dark side of celebrity and is being promised bigger and better things and she has forgotten why she began the reality show in the first place. Jon has seen the dark side and was bitten in the rear by it. He wants to go back she wants to go forward. Can a marriage survive such different goals? Time will tell. It will be an interesting year to see where this family goes....

I watched both episodes and enjoyed them. I think Kate is really coming into her own. She doesn't freak out about everything now. She seems to be enjoying the kids more.

Jon on the other hand, comes across as pouty and immature. He is old enough to come to grips with the trade off you make when you have celebrity. You have a wonderful life, but there is a price to be paid in terms of loss of privacy. You can't have it both ways.

If anything, Kate should be the one complaining. People have said nasty things about her forever. She seems to let it roll off her back better. Jon said he loved traveling and meeting people, back when the blogosphere made Kate out to be the devil.

I found it funny that Jon can't be "just Jon" anymore. If he wasn't "Jon and Kate plus 8", I doubt those college girls would have invited his 30year old self to a party.

I've always been hard on Kate, but this whole episode shows a different side of Jon. Maybe he is her 9th child.

I was very impressed with these two last episodes of season 4. I had a feeling nothing big was going to happen and there really wasn't anything revealing. So Jon is having a hard time with being a stay at home Dad and the celebritiy of being part of Jon and Kate plus 8 is hard for him. The kids seem well adjusted and act like kids and it looks like Kates clean freak is affecting the boys more than the girls. Poor Aaden with the paint on his face and had a freak attack about it was cute. There art paintings turned out great and how Kate was excited to talk about them. Jon and Kate's relationship seemed fine during the interview and how they talked about hating their stupid couch. I liked how they signed the set at the end. Very nice ending!!

well, i just finished watching the episodes. wow. i have really conflicting emotions. i thought the first episode was pretty cute. seeing the kids at the basketball game, etc. Jon and kate seemed very lighthearted on the couch. the second episode was really distressing to me. of course, the kids were cute, as always. but that whole interaction between J&K at the end was a mess. first of all, i need one of the producers to tell kate to be quiet for half a second and let jon tell his own feelings. i can't count how many times kate started a sentence with "i think jon feels ____". Let JON tell how jon feels. he's perfectly capable. secondly, it saddened me to hear how unhappy he obviously is while she's saying how happy she is. i guess i don't understand how a wife can be so happy if her husband is miserable, even if she doesn't feel the same way about the situation. if my husband seems depressed, discouraged, etc that is going to affect me as well. i certainly am not going to sit there and talk about how happy i am. for me, what it boils down to is that they said they would continue to do the show as long as everyone loved doing it. that is obviously not the case anymore. IMO they need to put their marriage first, before their jobs. like others stated, i don't think i'll be watching season 5. i'm just not comfortable with it anymore.

Overall, I think the kid-related themes of these episodes were great...the Globetrotters, painting and the children's museum.

It's just my impression, but I think Mady may have just said she didn't want to go out on the court with the GTs when the kids were asked. It occured to me also while I was watching to wonder if it bothered Mady that Cara was out there, but when the camera panned back to her she wasn't showing any disgruntlement that I could see....and Mady's not one to hide her feelings. :)

I actually thought Kate was VERY relaxed and enjoyed herself and her kids in these episodes. It was great to see. And there were only minor "meltdowns" by the tups, so I'm guessing they had a blast.

As far as the shopping, I could tell the first shop was Gymboree (I think they showed the front of the store), but I had to guess at the second store being Ann Taylor Loft because I knew the clothes she was trying on were from there (via GosselinGarb) and I don't think they showed the front of the store.

Ann Taylor Loft, by the way, is the CHEAPER version of Ann Taylor. It carries perfectly nice stuff, but hardly "designer" clothing. It's obvious Kate loves that store, but on the "diva" scale of dressing well I don't think ATL would even rate "fashionista".

I was actually curious to see Kate shop, since we haven't seen her choosing clothes since she went with Jon to the BR outlet when she professed to know nothing about style. It was fun to see her shop, but then I love shopping and I'll even do it vicariously (I love "What Not To Wear"). I think Kate's obviously a fan as well considering the reference to Clint and Stacey doing a special with Kate to document her change in fashion sense.

The other things they addressed that I noted:

1. They have a helper, but not a nanny, i.e., "We will never have a nanny."

(As an aside, the posters who took Jon's comment at Penn State that they went through 15 people before they settled on this nanny as meaning they had hired 15 people and had them each work with the kids before choosing this one and not, perhaps, that they interviewed 15 people first certainly have "fertile" imaginations, IMO.)

2. Jon having trouble with "working from home," which I guess is the SAHD point many have made.

3. They discussed how much their lives have changed in the last year, that they acknowledge and enjoy the good things, and are coming to understand and come to terms with the bad things (Jon: "I can't be Jon. I have to be 'Jon & Kate Plus 8'.).

Now, considering this interview was probably filmed about two weeks ago when the final magazine articles came out (People), I can see all the hubbub adding to Jon's frustration with maybe being confined to staying home with the kids and his coming to terms with just how much their lives have changed.

And let's face it, right not Kate is probably having more fun. She gets to enjoy a little bit of the celebrity and still be home with the kids more than a mother who worked a 40-hour week would be. Whereas, Jon may only have the TLC film crews and production staff for adult conversation most of the time Kate is gone. He also wouldn't be the first parent to discover that staying at home with the kids is a THANKLESS job (although, I do think Kate acknowledges his role) at times.

We'll see. I'll go out on a limb and forecast that they'll continue with Season 5. With a break, and maybe making concrete plans for his future during that time, that Jon will get over his disgruntlement and enjoy taking part in the show. I think the influence they may be exerting over how the show goes in this next season as producers, and with Kate's enthusiasm and encouragement, Jon may enjoy his "job" more. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's actively making plans for "what comes next" once the show is done.

themrs said...

wouldn't this interview have to have been filmed awhile ago? didn't they say it was the last interview at the old house? that couldn't have been too recent?

Anonymous said...

Well, a marriage is also about compromising.

Would anyone have an issue if Jon would work full time and Kate would be unhappy?

I know my husband is really happy, but I am not. I moved to a foreign country, away from my family, I can't get the type of job here that I would in my homecountry etc. So I'm sacrificing a lot, because I know my husband is happy and also I can be with him and that's what counts. Is is easy? No.

I liked both episodes. I totally missed the Allstate thing? Was that during commercials?

marci said...

themrs,

The interview set was rebuilt at the new house to be identical to the one on the old house...you can see the bare, brick basement walls when they get up to sign the green drywall.

Also, Jon mentioned people taking pictures and "doing whatever they do with them," and all the hoopla surrounding those pictures was within the last month or so. And their Oprah appearance was two weeks ago (kids were wearing the clothes Kate picked out in the first epi).

Also, the I *think* the melodramatic promo for the season finale was pretty obviously thrown together to take advantage of the tabloid drama of late.

Anonymous said...

Last interview on that set. They recreated that set from the old house in their new house in the basement.

If you saw them zoom out at credits while they were signing the walls--you would see the concrete block wall of their new basement.

The interview set was always staged--and not their true daily arrangement in their old home anyway.

marci said...

Steph,

Before they went to see the Globetrotter's show Jon was sitting at his computer saying he had "lots of work to do" and that his Allstate agent had given him some things to look at. They then showed him looking at the Allstate website.

It was random and obvious.

marci said...

themrs,

Sorry, forgot to add...they said it was the last interview using that "set", not the old house, and Kate and Jon talked about getting a new loveseat, presumably for a new set.

themrs - I didn't see the show so I can't agree/disagree with your take on it, but I do agree wholeheartedly with what you say about husband/wife relationships. You and your husband can rightly consider yourselves one of the lucky couples. Obviously not everyone looks at marriage in the same way though. But I can see how viewing this through your eyes would be a turn-off for you.

I did see an interview a few weeks back that Jon Gosselin did and he seemed very enthusiastic then about changes in their lives, and about the show taking a new direction, and about some new plans they had in the works. He seemed so upbeat and so happy. But from what I'm reading, he doesn't sound like the same person I saw in that interview.

I remember when I used to watch the show, both Jon & Kate said they never paid any attention to the negative, Kate did a motion with her hand like she was discarding something into the trash and made a noise (I can't describe it in print), and Jon smiled at her and nodded his head in agreement, and said something about ignoring all the criticisms. Too bad he can't still think along those lines (if indeed it is only the bad press that is the problem). Because if you are going to live under a microscope you have to learn to ignore all the negative.

Mrs. Ref, I too went to Wanamakers all the time (Meet me at the Eagle). Grew up in Philly, worked in Philly until 1995. My mother worked at Wanamaker's from mid-1960to 1980's so we were there all the time. Remember the mono-rail ran around the ceiling of the toy department. What a thrill! and the Toy Department itself was a big deal for us at Christmas. Remember when they filmed Mannequinn there? It is still a grand store (has been Hecht's, Strawbridge's, Lord and Taylor). Still beautiful inside but now only 2 or 3 stories. The organ is still there I think. Remember the Christmas show and standing on the main floor and looking up and hearing John Facenda's booming voice? There rerecorded it a few years back with Julie Andrews or some actress. Not the same. Franklin Institute and the Heart!! In grade school my classmate would not come out because she was scared so she stayed in the heart screaming until a teacher went in and got her. Good times, good memories. Research PBS Philly Channel 12 for their shows "Things that arent' there anymore".

I haven't seen the second episode yet, so I should probably keep my yap shut about it, but I won't:

I've always assumed that Kate was the one less likely to enjoy all the attention, since she's not so much a "people person" as Jon is. Maybe if Jon were doing most of the traveling and giving talks, he'd be happier. Maybe it is just being at home.

But I also wonder if he's just more sensitive to the criticisms than Kate is. She's the one who "doesn't notice other people" - I think she's pretty sincere in just not even giving a thought to the haters (which is one of the things that drives them CRAZY). Whereas Jon, if internet gossip can be believed (of course it can!) is the one who has gotten into it in the past on message boards with people who criticized him and Kate or the family. I think Jon needs people's approval more than Kate does, so it's natural that the strain of the "controversy" would bother him more.

I have mixed feelings about Kate being upfront about being happy when Jon isn't (my mind may change of course, when I actually see the episode): on the one hand, I get what people are saying about how your spouse should come first, and you should not be able to be so happy when they are unhappy. OTOH, I think that in the past when Kate has been unhappy about things, it's been the consensus of most viewers that it's her own fault or problem, and that she needs to calm down, unclench, etc. People haven't perceived Jon being laid back and calm about things as a slap in the face to Kate and her anxiousness.

I know the situations aren't exactly alike, but while I do think that Kate should be supportive of Jon, ultimately I think it's up to him to work on those things that make him unhappy. He has some great opportunities right now and he should take advantage of them while he can.

(My impression of the first episode: kids - cute; Allstate commercial in middle of episode - painful. I don't object to product placement precisely because I can usually ignore it - actually, remain oblivious to it. This could not be ignored, and it was awkward and stupid and did nothing, I would venture to guess, to encourage anyone to choose Allstate as their insurance broker.)

Tell us what you think when you watch the second episode, but I certainly didn't get the impression Kate was gloating or being all, "But I LIKE IT," when they were discussing their differences. The interchange between them was not confrontational or one-sided at all, IMO.

Like you, I think Jon needs to work out his own issues. I do agree he'd probably not be feeling as much frustration if he was more involved in the "grown up" part of the business lately.

Kate's found (perhaps surprisingly) something that she enjoys doing. Unless Jon has some very specific objections about continuing the show for the next season, at least, I can certainly see Kate wanting to keep going, but, in turn, help and encourage Jon to find his was through this rough spot and to figure out his future.

I am sorry, I think I may have "sugar coated" what I was trying to say.

I live in Park City, Utah. While Jon was here recently he was seen carrying around photos of his family (just in case) anyone wanted one. He did a TV interview here (KUTV) with Shawna Lake and talked as if he was the "big man on campus" and a full-blown celebrity (my opinion).

As soon as his hand is caught in the "cookie jar" (my opinion) he doesn't want to be the "big man on campus" or any type of celebrity.

I think we all know you can't have it both ways.

Get out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat.

How mean are people to pick on sweet Aaden. I was impressed with how well he enunciated all his words. He always seems so quiet and we don't get to hear him say much. I've read how he he must be lacking because he didn't know corn on the cob from eggplant and couldn't spell his name.
Of course the kid knows corn on the cob, we've seen them eating it. He must not have been able to find it or forgot what mom told him. It was obvious to me he was just making a stab at it which is why he was asking if it that was it while holding up the eggplant. Sometimes they stare at something and still need mom to show them where it is as we alone have those magic powers. Remember him wanting to see Grover and Grover was right there?
Also, at the painting place, he wasn't given the opportunity to spell his name. I only saw it once, but irc, he was trying to spell his name and the lady took over for him and she put the I in it. Aaden was trying to tell her and then another tup even chimed in and said there was no I. That's what I remember, so I still find it hard that others miss these things with all their scrutiny.
He knew all those animals and sounds when he was just a little guy and has been shown to be curious. I thought one of his cute moments was when he was expecting there would animals out in there barn at their new house, and then of course, “I can't see sheep”. I think he's a smart one and thought he spoke well for his age.

Eileen, if you're talking about the ski-trip in Utah, that is quite a bit of difference in attitude. I thought he seemed on top of the world when I watched that interview.

I'm not sure, maybe they didn't realize the extent they opened themselves up to this kind of rumor and innuendo. Maybe this one affected their children more than the rest of the stuff, but Kate's attitude led me to believe this was more Jon's problem. I also didn't get the impression she was putting herself first, just explaining how much she loved it and it worked for her. I'm kind of wondering along w/Floridamom is Jon is her 9th child. I give him big kudos for being a house-dad and his love for his family, but that doesn't mean he's mature. I don't agree w/the way Kate talks to him, but maybe it explains a little of her frustration towards him.

marci said...

happymomma,

I didn't think you were trying to "sugar coat" your point. I got it.

I don't think you have to be on one or the other of the Gosselin discussion to grasp that Jon got a good lesson in what the downside of being in the public eye is like, vis a vis, tabloid stories.

If anything, I think he made it pretty clear in the season finale episode last night that he has serious reservations about the loss of his control over what people do with and say about his public image. I believe the fact he thought he could innocently pose for pictures with fans in "questionable" venues shows he didn't really "get it" until just recently.

Do I think he wouldn't be complaining about his fame today but for your "hand in the cookie jar" analogy? Maybe not.

He most likely gave last night's interview in the midst of all the tabloid "heat" a few weeks ago. I imagine once those articles are a distant memory (and, frankly, it's been pretty much a dead subject for days now) for him, he may find some breathing room to create a balance for his public and private lives.

Both Jon and Kate acknowledged last night that once you're "out there" in the public, your "out there" forever. You can't take it back. They're going to have to come to terms with that fact whether they end the show today or not.

I apologize to begin with for this being so long.
I have a girlfriend whose husbands dream was always to move to a Southern state (we are in PA). When he lost his job he began looking for employment in a different state. He was honest to his wife about it but when he went down, interviewed, and a couple weeks later got a job she was devastated. She didn't want to move. She has friends here, a job she has worked at for over 20 years, and 4 children in a great school. However, this was her husband's dream...He moved south in the fall and left behind his wife and children until the house up here sold. Well, that was 6 months later. After the sell of the house, he found a house for the family down there and everything was in place for the move...They did it at the end of school last year. She cried for months about the move and was brutally honest about the fact that she didn't want to go and wasn't excited. He went through with the job and moved knowingly that she was unhappy....Okay they have been there almost a year and she admits that she still would move home if the opportunity was there. Okay, the point to my story is that her husband isn't being disrespectful or rude in my opinion because he is following his dreams...he knows that she will most likely turn around and change her feelings about life down there and in the mean time he is living a "fulfilled" life. He shouldn't have given up the opportunities for him for her and vice versa...that is how marriage works. Sometimes it's great for both but more often than not only one partner at a time is feeling the "Wow, this is everything I could imagine" moment. Part of being married is allowing the other to grow and enjoy what they are doing while expecting support and encouragement while they find whatever makes them the happiest. Kate should in no way give up what she loves, but help Jon discover what makes him happy.

Dadfan, I agree!

That was the deal or so they told their audience. If it ever gets to the point that this is not fun or our family is being negatively affected, we will stop (not a direct quote but something to that effect).

I don't liken this to a move or one spouse sacrificing for the other. IMO, that is comparing apples to oranges. We're talking about the continued loss of privacy not only for him, but for his children.

We're also talking about an inability to work or do anything that makes him feel productive as as a person.

I know spouses give up schooling, move often, have children...whatever. There are sacrifices made. Generally, though, if the sacrifice is going to be detrimental to the family and render the other spouse completely miserable, I don't think it should be dismissed with "Well, I love it. He's struggling. But I love it"

I really don't know if the benefit of financial security and free trips outweighs the emotional health and well-being of the family. The marriage is already struggling. Cara and Mady, I'd be my life, are unhappy with the filming.

Family is of the utmost importance. I have absolutely no problems with Kate making money or being in the media if she so desires. But, at this point, it is my opinion that it is time to let these kids be kids. Jon wants a typical life and Kate is saying "we can never go back."

Maybe that's true but it doesn't mean that they can't at least, go backwards a few paces.

Guinevere said...

Okay, now having watched the second episode: I really enjoyed it for the most part. So many cute kid moments, and Kate was really happy and relaxed with them.

The couch business at the end: I just can't help but feel that this interview must have really coincided with the tabloid business, and I think that was influencing Jon's feelings quite a bit. His lack of anonymity and the fact that people were aware of him when he went out, would take pictures of him - that seemed to be his focus (though he wasn't hugely articulate, as usual, and Kate didn't let him talk much, as usual).

So, given that, I can't get too worked up about Kate not showing Jon more sympathy over his unhappiness. One school of thought would be that Kate's lack of sympathy was Jon's due for frolicking with coeds in a bar. I don't know. I do feel for him, but I'd have to see how things go next season, what Jon is doing and what his demeanor is, in order to say that I think he's truly unhappy. He seemed his usual mellow self except for when they were discussing that issue; then he seemed more uncomfortable than anything else, to me.

Well I have watched both shows and I enjoyed them until the last couch interview. The 1st episode K&J seemed relaxed in the interviews and they all seemed to really enjoy the b'ball show. I think Kate feels a sense of independence now that she can take all the kids on outings w/o any problems. In the grocery part of the museum her kids were mingling w/other children and still having a great time. I think the final interview was just for the rumors going around about their marriage. Will be interesting to see the new interview room... and just how different season 5 is going to be. But all in all I enjoyed both episodes.

On a positive note, the kid's are so adorable. I liked seeing them at the Globetrotters. I also like when they visit places like the Please Touch Museum that I grew up going to and that I plan on taking my niece to. Not because of J&K, I've been planning this for a bit.

She just turned 5 and is the perfect age, now, to go. I haven't been to the one at this location. They moved it a few months (maybe a year at this point) ago to a bigger location outside of Center City Philly. Should be a good time.

I agree. Although the subject wasn't delved into too deeply, I walked away more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. In other words, I think it's very possible all he did was go to a bar, have a few and take pictures with some fans. End of story. I don't blame him for resenting the ensuing lies that were created by tabloids and blogs eager to peddle unfounded gossip to make money. That said, it goes with the territory of being a public figure and he is clearly struggling with that a bit.

Guinevere said...

We're also talking about an inability to work or do anything that makes him feel productive as as a person.

I'm not sure why this would necessarily be the case. The show was touted at one point as an OPPORTUNITY for J&K to be home with the kids more. If that's not fulfilling to him (and I can understand why it might not be), then I don't see what's stopping him from getting a job or pursuing other opportunities. Especially as the younger kids transition into all day school, there should be some for this. Maybe not for a full-time job, if he needs to be there for filming. But I think something could be worked out if Jon wants it.

I still think it's mostly embarrassment over the tabloid kerfuffle that was motivating Jon's feelings in that interview. If there is something deeper sense of dissatisfaction, then I think Jon is in a much better position than some people would be to change his circumstances. I do have sympathy for him if he's unsure about what path to take, and meanwhile he's watching Kate's career blossoming. But I think just as she needs to be supportive of him, he needs to support her and be happy that she's happy. She's put in her time with the kids in the past, hasn't she? (I don't know if she was ever a full time SAHM, because I know she picked up nursing shifts when the sextuplets were young. But she definitely wasn't working full-time for a lot of the time that Jon was.)

I just got done watching a rerun of Jon and Kate. The one where they go back to the Hershey Med Center. (BTW my favorite episode by far). At one point Kate got very emotional and it looked like she was looking to Jon to continue the conversation. He looked down and mutter pretty much what she just said.
Okay, my point is that some people are upset that Kate didn't let Jon speak this past week about how HE was feeling. Well, by the looks of the episode I just watched he is just not that comfortable expressing conversation that is emotional.
Just a thought :)

I think this is a good point. I think it's probably something that has developed between them. Kate DOES talk over Jon. She finishes sentences for him. This may have developed in part because she was trying to help him articulate thoughts when he was having trouble expressing himself. But I think it's an unhealthy dynamic because it's something that doesn't encourage him to LEARN to express himself. I understand the impulse because I think Kate's a talker, and she probably doesn't have much patience with Jon when he's mumbling and searching for the right word (and no, I'm not saying that Kate is a model of articulation, but she doesn't usually stumble over her words, even if she makes up words and says "um" a lot).

I don't know - maybe it's not a problem with them. I think it can be frustrating for the viewers, because we want to hear Jon's thoughts. But if it does bother Jon, he needs to let Kate know that.

Ok, it's a deal. I'll trade you my 17-year-old diva! LOL.

Naw, couldn't do that to you, I like you too much! :-)

I have made this show a point to be on my TV schedule and now my feelings are shattered that they might not make it. Many dads feel left out and overpowered by the motherly instinct of a mom. They take that feeling and move out into the mainstream of socializing. Many "dads" do that. It appears that Jon is willing to sacrifice the show for being able to do as he pleases. Just remember, the money will not be there anymore, when this happens. Jon needs a real job and Kate should be able to survive at home w/o him if necessary. I do hope they work things out but also find it difficult that many parts are scripted and fake and perhaps he is rebelling from that also. Grab the integrity!! my best advice.

HMMMMMMM

Thanks,

Ok, so this is probably the 4th or 5th time that I posted on the "other" blog when my comments did not get posted presumable because I did not completely agree with the general opinion about Kate's wardrobe choices, or Jon referring to the building on his property as "out buildings" or the kid's lunches. It frustrates me greatly that that blog positions itself as an advocacy site but is really a place to pick incessantly on Kate.

I do think that they have greatly sacrificed their kids privacy to fatten their bank accounts, and I do think that they do seem to be feeling more entitled... but I think that it's ok for Kate to dress from Ann Taylor LOFT (their clothes are very reasonably priced when on sale -- in fact I have gotten things much cheaper than at Target). I think it's ok to give kids crackers, grapes and cheese for lunch regardless of your income. Stick to the point.
