Summer is almost here and I need to lose weight. Seriously. I started to diet last week and I gained 6 pounds. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

I just looked at the TLC website and it looks like Monday the 25 is a MARATHON day of the newest JK8 episodes :) Then the premiere at 9 is the tups 5th bday and then at 9:30 it just says episode 2--no description yet. Can't wait! The description says Jon and Kate are throwing a big bash for them and inviting a lot of their friends...wonder if that means the tups friends from school or might that mean we see the reappearance of Beth and Bob, Jodi and Kevin, Nana Janet etc?

Sandy; Im not sure if you have a dog or not but seriously they are the best diet plan. At least mine is..... we got her about a year ago honestly I have had to buy a whole new wardrobe (smaller lol) She loves walks (its really more like running) and if you don't go at least once a day she just gets the saddest face..... we take her out the big garage door and every morning she will stand at the door..... its really quite cute...... and since none of my kids are old enough to walk her by themselves and my husband is at work its left up to me. Oh and she usually ends up eating half my food at dinner. She has some bad habits, lol, but we love her anyways!

And if your not interested in getting a dog, or you already have one, I hear good things about weight watchers. Oh and after my last pregnancy I did a slim in 6 DVD workout (Im not sure who its by but I will look into it). It is REALLY great. I was a size 6 before my last pregnancy, went up quite a bit (way too much probably) but after the slim in 6 (its 6 weeks) I was down to a size 4. Its pretty intense and can take up to an hour some days but you do it 6 days a week for 6 weeks and each week or so you move on to a tougher section. Its great for the tummy area and thighs.

What a great idea. I have a 14 year young little mini pini. She still loves the walks and instead on my hubby I think I will be the designated dog walker. I'm going on-line now to check out the Weight Watchers program. Thanks for taking the time to post some health-ful info.

Sandy: Here is the website that I ordered my Slim in 6 DVDs from:
http://www.beachbody.com/product/fitness_programs/slim_in_6.do

They currently selling for 3 payments of $20 ($60) which is MUCH cheaper than what I payed! ($110)

I've been going to Curves for over 4 years and intially lost 25 lbs which I've kept most of off. I've definitely hit a plateau, though and have gained five pounds over the winter... so... Last week I started WeightWatchers online. I have done WW several times in the past.. It always works if you just do it! I lost two pounds the first week and am determined to keep it up as long as I can. I like the new Momentum program..

I just try to eat smaller portions. I bought a Wii Fit and try and use it everyday for at least 1/2 hour. I also walk 3-5 miles about 3 times a week. I have lost 10 pounds, but it came off slowly. Menopause causes havoc to your metabolism, I think. LOL I also have a tyroid condition which does slow down your metabolism. The last time we talked about this I was very frustrated, but I just kept at it and it seems to be working!

Linda said...

A few years ago I lost 15 lbs. with Weight Watchers and along with exercise have kept it off.

The thing that I like about WW is that it has really helped me look at food differently.

Darlene Williams said...

When I was a teenager I tried this program and it worked for me. http://www.tops.org/default.aspx I don't know if anyone heard of this program before but I sure enjoyed it.

Mom said...

I lost 30+ with WW years ago. Unfortunately, I gained it all back over the years. I think 25 of it is my ass, too! ;-)

IndianPrincess - I have heard of TOPS. I'll have to check out that link.

I'm hoping to get pregnant in the next few months. My weight will hopefully all shift like it did with Babe #1. I also ate SO healthy - no processed anything when I was pregnant. I would almost throw up if I saw a fast food commercial! LOL!

All kidding aside, I do need to lose about 20lbs. My problem is exercise. I need to set aside some "me" time and make myself do something - even if it's just walking.

Sandy, if you lived near me we could work out together. :-) My sisters and I papered the neighborhood with fliers on Saturday advertising my "services." Since I'll only be home from school for about 6 weeks before I leave from Spain, I'm trying to do some tutoring rather than looking for a job (no one hires college students for the summer anymore anyway). I included personal training on the list of things I offer, since I've trained my friends before. I don't know how many people want to train with a 20-year-old though; my friends say I'm too tough and they are the same age! :-)

On a serious note, summer just started and it's already stressful. One of the people who's going to Spain with me asked me to conduct research with him while we are over there. I agreed, but once I found out he didn't have any research experience it became evident that he wanted me to do most of the work (APA format and research designs are tough!) but give him most of the credit. Of course, I told him that wasn't going to fly, and I asked him not to use my work without crediting me (basically I've already made a substantial enough contribution to the paper that I merit author credit and the study hasn't even started). He was uncooperative, and so I've had to contact faculty at school to make sure he doesn't plagiarize my work. It's really crappy, because no matter how many times I've tried to explain how it works (because I'm the only one of us who's taken a research methods class and written a research paper before), he's too stubborn to listen. I'm glad to have dealt with this sooner rather than later, and luckily I have documentation of all of my contributions (which basically include the entire study design).

Has anybody tried Nutri-system and had success with it? Are they tasty?

We live in an area where Costo has been sprouting up the last few years. They just opened up a new Costco about 15 minutes from where I work. I was thinking of getting a membership. My sister said Costco sells Nutri-System at their stores and it's less expensive than buying via online. Has anybody bought Nutri-System at Costco? Is it much of a savings?

Anonymous said...

I haven't tried Nutri-system much less bought it at costco, but I go to costco at least once a week so I can check into it if ya like. :) I live in canada though so Im not sure if they carry the same products at the same price or what....

Theresa said...

If it's not a bother Jacelynn, that would be great. If they carry the product, they probably have similar deals at their stores.

I think at the end of next week, when work calms down (working a double shift this week), I'll sign up for a Costco membership. Sounds like Costco does have good deals all around on products.

thanks Jacelynn!

My son's surgery went well and we are home! :)

He forced me to watch the same Teletubbies DVD over and over in the hospital. However, it made him feel better and was totally worth it.

Theresa said...

That is fantastic Three Amazing Kids!! Good to hear!

What a perfect Mother's day gift for you.

Anonymous said...

Three Amazing Kids: I am soooooo glad your sons surgery went well!

Theresa: No problem at all. I will either go Thurs or Friday so I'll let you know around then. :)

Jenn said...

Has anyone ever tried those cookie diets?

Lizzy said...

Three, I am so glad everything went well... though I do not envy you sitting through constant Teletubbies. That would drive me up the wall :).

I recently gave up caffeine and soda, which was easier than I thought it would be. I have never been a water drinker but that is now all I drink most days! I did have a Sprite the other day as a special treat, but found I was so thirsty after it that I just chugged my water. Anyway, all that to say-- its helping me lose weight :). I am not unhappy with my size but just hope to feel better and have all my clothes just fit a little looser. Also, giving up caffeine has done wonders for my sleep at night. I've been falling asleep faster, sleeping deeper, and waking up more refreshed-- all of which help me feel better and thus help me make better food choices.

I really feel like I have to share this. This is going to sound strange, but when my son was waiting to go back for his surgery we were stuck in a room for 6 hours that we could not leave because he is colonized with someting called MRSA that he got in the NICU. Immagine being stuck in a small room with a tv, some toys, and a sink with a very hungry and cranky 3 year old. I broke at hour four and asked the nurses what was going on. They told me that the patient infront of my son had a life threatening medical emergency and that there was nothing they could do but have us wait. They gave us a video game system so I could play video games for him and let him sit in my lap and watch (he loves doing that at home with Daddy). I learned something about myself in those six hours. I have also really learned that the small anoyances are meaningless. I would much rather be the one with the anoyed three year old than be the parent in the waiting room wondering if their child would live or die. After they brought him back for his surgery, I saw the sick child's parents in the waiting room. You did not even have to ask which ones they were because it was very obvious. The unit my son was on is right next to the pediatric ICU, and I saw them a few times on the elevators. I would say a prayer for them each time I saw them. I also saw a lot of sad cases on my son's unit. My son was the healthiest and highest functioning kid there. There were a lot of kids and babies who's parents have pretty much given up on them and have abandonded them. We have endured multiplie hospitalizations amongst the kids, but for some reason this go around has been really different. I feel like for the first time my son has a new lease on life. Also by seeing what other kids and families are going through, the minor irritations just do not get to me anymore. It is hard to put it into words. Sorry to blather.

Anyhow, would you guys please mind praying for a dear friend of mine? She has a baby the same age as my son who was just in the hospital. Her daughter is in the hospital right now and has been for the past few months. Things are really bad for her. http://tinyurl.com/pfu8yh

TAK: Will definitely pray for your friend and continue praying for not only you but all the great people I have "met" on here.

Three Amazing Kids, thank you for posting your friend's blog. And thank you for sharing your story and keeping us up to date.
You are all in my prayers.
God's Blessings on you all.

Darlene Williams said...

That is great news about your son Three amazing kids. I will pray for your friend's little girl. It breaks my heart when little souls are sick. God bless your family and your friends family.

Three Amazing Kids. I am so happy for you and wanted to thank you for sharing all that you have. It didn't sound like blather to me, it sounded like you've been through a lot and grown from it. I'm sure you're ecstatic. I wish good health for you all.

Bigis88, blech, that sounds tedious and frustrating. Again, blech!
I hope you find some students to tutor. Does it seem like forever before your trip, or is it going fast?

merryway said...

Bigis88, btw, my blech was aimed at what you had to deal with and having to go to the faculty, not w/your actual work.

Sandy--are you drinking lots of water?

I am trying to lose weight as well--I'm working on the biggest loser approach...very controlled healthful meals and snacks and lots of exercise to jumpstart the process. (I'm going on that the past people who are still successful do have more normal workout routines).

Time for me to lose 45 pounds and get that rock solid atheletic body I have always wanted! Let's here it for thighs that don't rub together! Hip Hip Hooray! Thighs--you listening? THat could be you one day!

Today is a weird day as hubby and I were up too late last night talking....BUT

My plan is wake up and walk for 60-90 minutes on the treadmill and shower.

Then later in the day I hit the gym--yesterday I did 15 minutes on this really cool climber that works the hiney.

Yesterday's gym date was short due to a time crunch.

Then in the evenings after all the kids are asleep, I plan to hop on the treadmill again.

My goal is to get 3-4 hours of good exercise a day with Sundays a day of rest/fun.

The reason--nothing else has been working and I have been giving up every single time and stuffing my face in self pity.

I'm hoping that I can break this post-baby plateau that I have been stuck at.

I think they say that with each baby it gets harder to lose the weight.

I think the last has been especially difficult b/c one would think my uterus was in my behind and thighs given all the stubborn weight refusing to move.

I know spurts in exercise are good plateau breakers--so I am going to use that as my jump start.

Oh wow my three kids--what a story! We will add them to our prayers.

Just found this link-- it is a list of 15 foods that burn more calories than they contain. Now THIS is how to lose weight :). Dieting should be about making sure you eat healthy, so hopefully bulking up on these foods will give you a jump start to losing weight for summer!

Thanks for the link Liza Beth, that list is REALLY going to come in handy! (for me anyways :)

I know this sounds easy, and actually it is, just eat 50% less. Smaller bowl of cereal in the a.m., half a sandwhich instead of a whole, 10 chips instead of 20. You get the idea. It does work and you don't feel deprived. I walk 5 days a week with my dog.

Good luck to everyone who is trying.!

Walk - seriously. I lost 117 lbs by walking first around the neighborhood then I bought myself a treadmill for the days it was too cold and rainy - but when the the weather gets beautiful, I'm back outside. Of course I had to eat right - but I was able to still have a snack. I went with the Lean Cuisines - but since walking raised my metabolism - I was able to have that ice cream every once in awhile and not worry. It took me about a year to lose it and it's been 3 years and I've been able to keep it off - now granted I do wiggle with 5-7 pounds, I put it on and take it off very easy (both ways) I just didn't realize how much I wasn't moving - Period!! and with the exercise and changing my diet I was floored. It is hard though because it was never this hard when I was younger - as you age and also hitting menopause - it's a rough road. I had surgically induced menopause and was not able to use the HRT due to blood clots and that's when I really started packing on the pounds - but I'm very comfortable with myself now and that's what's important. I was able to come off my high blood pressure medication, I still have to take my heart medication but that's a rest of my life type deal. If you have a pooch or little kid - pile them in a stroller and get to walking. It's amazing how with a little walking and raising your metabolism it really changed my life - I just didn't get it before. Good Luck to all - it takes time and with our lives as busy as ever it really is hard to fit the time in but you NEED that time to yourself, just a 1/2 hour a day and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Jenn, I have tried the Hollywood Cookie Diet. The cookies only taste sort of okay if you heat them up in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. The biggest problem I had was that they didn't make me feel full the way they were supposed to. My appetite was the same. That was me, though. It might work for you. If you want to try it just go to Amazon or some other discount place on the net and buy only 1 box to try.

I decided to switch back to SlimFast for something to help with hunger at snack times. SlimFast has the same basic concept as the cookies and the new cappuccino flavor is actually pretty good.

Weed- that is AWESOME! Truly amazing, you should be very proud of yourself :)

My goal is to get 3-4 hours of good exercise a day with Sundays a day of rest/fun.That's about 3-1/2 hours more than I have set as a goal! 1/2 hour is my limit. Ugh! Respect and admiration from me to you Amommynous.

Weed, congratulations. I might just try walking again.

Thanks!
